1198.1 | Well, maybe not God, but... | HUMAN::BURROWS | Jim Burrows | Fri May 20 1988 23:24 | 9 |
| I bought mine at Lechmere's along with a 10-pack of the
top-of-the-line BASF 90 CrO tapes (which was selling for $17.95)
and which was good for $5 off on the price of any CD. So I
either got Crossroads at $35 or the C90s at $1.29 a piece.
However you look at it, a good price. Crossroads has sold out
there for at least the third time, but the tapes are still
there.

1198.2 | As to the disks themselves... | HUMAN::BURROWS | Jim Burrows | Fri May 20 1988 23:38 | 24 |
| As long as I'm on the topic of Crossroads, I'd like to point out
that an awful lot of it is previously unreleased or off of EPs,
singles or 12 inch singles that were moderately hard to find in
the US, so you can treat this as about 1/3 reissue anthology and
2/3 (the fractions are off the top of my head--someone who can
count to 73 can make them real) new releases. This album is
definitely worth getting.
The set does a pretty good job at showing both Clapton's range
and the various stages of his career. Only one of the cuts, an
old live version of "Have You Ever Loved a Woman?" from
pre-Patty Harrison days, is of inferior sound quality, and it is
at least interesting for the comparison to the one from "Layla".
It makes all the more clear that the blues are best sung from
experience.
Some of the previously unreleased stuff is a bit less polished
than the released material from the same sessions or periods,
but one of Clapton's complaints always was that the record
companies were more interested in commericialism and polish than
the music, so these cuts may actually be closer to his own view
of how the music ought to be played.

| Just to explain the title of this topic, this was the graffito that
started appearing in the late 1960's around South London.
To quote Max Boyce (of whom the majority of the readers of this notes
conference will never have heard), "I know, beacause you see, I
was there...".

1198.4 | Almost 5 hours of heaven ! | VEEJAY::ECTOR | Stax of Wax, Lbs. of platters | Fri Jun 24 1988 20:04 | 21 |

Clapton's "Crossroads" - in a word - ULTIMATE ! The best $50 I've
spent all year. He may not be God (God probably is smart enough
not to smoke), but his music puts me in heaven.
I would've done some different Derek & the Dominoes stuff, but overall
I'm really pleased with the discs. The annotation is great, too
and leaves no question as to who were on the sessions with him.
It was interesting to see how many times Rita Coolidge and/or Yvonne
Elliman/Marcy Levy backed him up.
With just a couple of exceptions (such as the live track of Mayall's
band) the sound quality is excellent....very alive ! Track selection
is interesting, but gives a well rounded view of his career. It's
the best compilation of his later material you'll probably ever
see.

| Yes, I could not agree with you more about this great CD !!!
But I noticed a mistake ( I think ? ). In the book (what a super
book !!) the song BETTER MAKE IT THROUGH TODAY is noted as being
released on the THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD but my CD of 461 has it and
so does my old strachy album ? is this right or wrong ?
Besides that what info this book gives, I love it !!

1198.9 | Crossroad is great. | KANE::CASTIGLIONE | Born to be Wild | Thu Aug 11 1988 09:58 | 9 |
| I just picked it up aftert readingh about this in here. I actually
saw it in a record store for $63.95 and another one for $59.95.
So I bought it at Lechmere for $49.95. Good stuff, I like the unreased
stuff they put on it along with different arrangements of a few
cuts. One thing I noticed that when the times come up on my CD,
some of the discs read over 75 minuets. I thought that 74 and a
few seconds was the max, according to this file.
