1189.0. "Magnavox 472, $179" by STAR::PACIELLO () Tue May 10 1988 11:17

This is my first entry to this NOTES file. First, I would like
to thank the person who created it. I've been a CD sceptic for
a long time...In my own mind I just couldn't justify the cost
of CD's over tapes and albums. My position has changed dramatically
as a result of this forum.

Because I am an avid tunes listener, I enjoy quality music. In
general my interests vary, but for the most part I listen to
Jazz and 70's music. About a month ago I decided to peruse through
the various hi-fi shops (Lechemere, Tweeter Etc..., Electra City,
etc..etc..) to look at CD players. I had never heard one up until
this point. I was aware of price ranges...I figured I could by a
fairly decent player in my price range of $160-$180. I would
stretch it to $200.00 if I had to.

While at Lechemere's I found a Yamaha CD-45 that had been returned
but was in good condition otherwise. Since Lechemere's has a 30-day
return policy on their stereo products, this would give me a chance
to "test" out the CD's as a whole. And the player was only $140.00.
Why not? I took it home and was genuinely impressed...At least to
the point of deciding to check this out more seriously. At this
point I decided to look for reviews. I checked out this NOTES file,
read through the AUDIO notes file, searched Consumer Reports, Stereo
Review, and various audiophile friends. Everyone has very helpful.

I had narrowed my choices to either a Sony or Magnavox. Now, could
I get one in my price range? For some reason I was really leaning
toward the Maggies, everyone seems to feel that these are top-of-
the-line with the Phillips technology. I searched and searched to
find one. Service Merchandise was selling the CDP-6.. something
series at $189.00...Sears sold the CDP-473 for $299 on sale!
Finally I stopped at Harvey's in Manchester, NH. They had just
stocked new Maggies. I had heard and read that the 470-series
was the one to lean towards..I still wasn't familiar with all the
models though. I asked the salesman and he sold me a CDP-470, saying
that is was exactly like the 472 (the other model that he carried,
no 473's were available and they are out of my budget anyways) without
the remote and headphone jack...I bought it for $169.00. He said
the 472's were 225.00. Seemed like a good deal. I brought it home
and the quality far surpassed the Yamaha...Still something didn't
seem right..I kept reading the specs, which I partially understood.
The specs read that this systme contained 2 16-bit D/A filters.
I wasn't sure whether that meant it had double-oversampling, quadruple-
oversampling, or just the D/A filter system. Also, the total distortion
rate was 0.05%. Not bad, but I've read better. I decided to try
and get the specs on a 472....Of all places, I found the 472 at
Montgomery Wards (it's on sale right now for $179!). The system
doesn't look anything like the 470...Except that they are both black.
The 472 has the headphones, the remote, quadruple oversampling,
different loading mechanism, different panel outlay, FTS, 0.003
total harmonic distoration rate, etc...etc...I found this out on
Thursday. Friday morning I called Harvey's...They agreed to take
back the 470, apologized for the mistake, and on top of it, sold
me the 472 for $179.00! (They presently have it advertised at 229.00!)
I couldn't be happier...I love the machine...Sent for my subscription
to Noteworthy's catalogue and I'm on my way to CD-land...

I know this is a long story, but it makes for a good experience.
The only question I have is this: Does the Maggie CDP-472 compare
with the 473 or the Sony's? Did I really get a good deal, as I've
    lead myself to believe?

    Thanks,

            Mike

Are you sure that that's the price at Wards _now_? I was encouraged by your
note, and went right up to the Wards at the Nashua Mall (Exit 6). They had a
"sale" sign on the 472, but the price listed was $199! I asked the sales
person to check, and that was the correct price.

So how did you do it?

Bob

P.S. Don't go to the Nashua Montgomery Wards unless you have a LOT of time.
They are slow, especially at the parcel pick-up. I had one person ahead of me
for both the sales person and the pick-up, and it took me almost an hour!
1189.2560 and 472 comparedXANADU::FLEISCHERBob, DTN 381-0895, ZKO3-2/T63, BOSE A/DWed May 11 1988 08:2929
I recently bought a Magnavox 560, and just yesterday I got a Magnavox 472. I
am planning on returning the 560. But I was curious and compared the specs as
listed in the two manuals:

                                560 472
Amplitude Linearity 0.2dB (20-20kHz) 0.1dB (20-20kHz)
Phase Linearity 0.5 0.5
Dynamic Range 96dB > 96dB
Signal-Noise Ratio 101dB > 100dB
Channel Separation 100dB > 96dB
Total Harmonic Distortion .0025% < .003%

The 472 has a headphone jack, the 560 does not.

The 472 has a drawer that you can "push" in, the 560's must be closed with the
"open/close" button (I find that annoying).

The 560 has more functions on the remote control. In particular, the 560 can
do the "search" function remotely, whereas the 472 cannot.

The 560 has the "traditional" LED illuminating the disk which you can see
through a clear window on the drawer. With the 472, you can't see if a disk is
inserted or spinning.

The price for both (that I paid) was the same -- $199.

Any comments?

Bob
1189.3MAGGIE 472, $179.00, no doubtSTAR::PACIELLOWed May 11 1988 09:4323
    Bob,

They must have raised the price...It definately was $179.00...My
guess is that they caught on that they were selling this model at
a relatively cheap price. I was so surprised that I took my wife
to prove it to her...Also, just before I decided to return my 470,
I called Monty's to verify the price. The salesman assured me that
is was $179. That has got to be a steal. Actually, $199 isn't bad
    either....

Thanks for printing the specs...I read in the AUDIO notes file
yesterday that the playing quality between the 560, 465, 470, 472,
and 473 is equal...With some you get a few more options...I do have
one question that someone may be able to answer...I noticed that
my 472 has a small window with the acronym, FTS. I've heard that
this means "Favorite Track Selection"...However, the Magnavox
documentation says nothing about it and I have no idea whether it
    is operative.

I spent most of the night recording CD's...I just can't get enough
    of a good thing.

I note that the 472 responds to all the extra 560 remote functions properly,
including search. I wonder how much a 560 remote costs?

The drawer on the 472 seems more rugged than the 560's drawer.

1189.5Let's get physicalSTAR::PACIELLOFri May 13 1988 11:419
From everything that I've read, the 472 is a better machine
"physically". Aren't there a lot of plastic parts on the 560?

I'm going to give my 472 a real "quality" test tonight. I just
received a TELARC Mastered CD today. My understanding is that
these CD's are top-of-the-line for CD production. It's pure a
    digital master.

    re: 560
I picked mine up at Service Merchandise a month or so ago. I paid
$116.+ (10% off the sale price of $129), so that should be weighed
when comparing the 560 and 47x. Given that they are so close, or
better spec-wise, and the added remote functionality, I'd have to
give the nod to the 560.

I agree, for that price...However, I also understand that Service
Merchandise ran that sale to clear out the model; they don't sell
it anymore...Everyone else that does sells it for the same price
    as the 472.

    re .8:

there's a service merchandise store in a shopping center on the
northeast corner of the intersection of rts 495 & 38 (i think it's
exit 38)... traffic there is awful anytime close to rush hour.
