1181.0. "The Steve Miller Band: Greatest Hits 1974-78" by RSTS32::DBMILLER (Cecil B D'Miller, the Esoteric) Wed May 04 1988 14:36

    Does anyone else have a copy of the above (CD or non-CD)

    Right at the beginning of "Dance, Dance, Dance," my copy
    has a _horrible_ amount of distortion when he says the
    "five" in "ninety-five"

    Can anyone with another copy confirm/deny this? Does anyone
    have it on vinyl/tape with this aberation?

    The CD itself looks fine.

I've got it on CD. The signal level on the passage to which you refer is
high, but it comes through cleanly, without distortion. You might try
headphones coming right off the CD player, to eliminate the possibility that
the high signal level is exceeding the capacities of some other part of the
system.
1181.2I'll double-check it tonightRSTS32::DBMILLERCecil B D'Miller, the EsotericThu May 05 1988 14:578
    It happens with cheap headphones at work on my D-10, as well as on my
    home player through the speakers. I'll try it again on my home player
    tonight with good headphones.

    It sounds to me like a dirty pot (potentiometer) got turned right at
    that point, almost like a tuner that loses the station for a second.

1181.3Still sounds bad to me...RSTS32::DBMILLERCecil B D'Miller, the EsotericFri May 06 1988 10:009
    Well, I listened to it again last night. It still sounds terrible
    to me. It might be the fact that there's a slow guitar strum going
    on at the same time and I'm hearing fret-buzz or hand movement. It
    just seems like there was too much break-up to go unnoticed.

    I got it through Noteworthy, but I may try going to a local store
    and seeing if I can listen to another copy to see if it's any better.

1181.4At the beep the time ...TOOK::MICHAUDJeff MichaudFri May 06 1988 17:164
    Question: what is the playing time of this CD?

    I know on LP, 1/2 of the second side is wasted space. Did they
    put extra cuts on the CD?
1181.544:mumble. I forgot exactly.ATSE::DBMILLERCecil B D'Miller, the EsotericMon May 09 1988 12:495
    The CD lasts just under 45 minutes. I wrote down the time, but forgot
    to bring it in. I don't think there's any extra cuts. It has 14
    tracks on it. (Counting Threshold and Jet Airliner as separate tracks)
