Anyone seen (or heard of) PRE Scary Monsters discs at reasonable prices??
(U.S.) I've seen Heroes, Low, and I think Ziggy at Rock n Mania
for $20 each. Are these available in the UK at 'standard' prices?

I'd love to get everything from Space Oddity up to Scary Monsters!

I've never even seen Diamond Dogs, Station to Station, Young
    Americans...

    Who knows the scoop?

The catalogue prices are 14.98. Some of the Sound City's prices
have fallen. You can ask when you call if Bowies happen to be the
ones getting the discount but if Bowies happen to be, you will get the
discounted prices automatically. CDP is Capital and those three discs are
available through Noteworthy for under $12. They don't have the
PCD1's listed. I think that is RCA.

Thanks to -1 for the listing incl. CAT nos. - I believe there are
three titles missing from this list, and coincidentally all three
    are 'live' recordings, i.e. :-

"Ziggy Stardust - The Motion Picture" (1973 concert)
    "David Live" (1974 concert)
    "Stage" (1978 concert)

I'm pretty certain that all three are currently available, but I
don't have the Cat. Nos. at hand. Mind you, I wouldn't exactly
rush out to buy them - someway, somehow, Bowie (or RCA at least)
has yet to release a decent live performance. Years back, they
talked about releasing a recording of an October '72 gig in Santa
Monica, CA. - they delayed, and whaddyaknow, the bootleggers beat
'em to it! Indeed, it's one of the best boots I've ever heard,
having been recorded from an FM radio broadcast. Superb!

Other Bowie CD's which (I think) are available on the continent
(but not here in the U.K.) are :-

    "Peter And The Wolf" recital
    "Christiane F." soundtrack
    "Rare" compilation

Another (non-RCA) CD which WAS available in Germany three to four
years ago entitled simply "David Bowie" and consisting of songs
from his 1966/67 period with Deram/Decca, is now much sought-after,
and in fact is listed in this month's 'Record Collector' magazine
as having a current saleable value of c.$160!! Wouldn't mind bagging
a few boxes of these on my next trip to Deutschland!!

One final point - I don't yet have a CD player, but I have 100+
Bowie LP's plus 45's, cassettes, videos etc. etc. I keep waiting
for the price of the software to come down.....

P.S. I read earlier this week that a video of the 'Glass Spider'
tour is gonna be hitting the streets just shortly - I hope
EMI America spare us from the usual accompanying double
album release. I've heard audio tapes of some of the gigs,
and let's just say that it most definately was not one of
his most memorable tours (from a performance as opposed to
          visual perspective).

sure if it was an import or not. It was under $20.00 I believe

Anyone know of a 'Best of...' compilation? I know there's Changes

piece. What I want is both these combined onto a single CD.

Changes One is well worth it. All tracks are great (except for
Diamond Dog, which I don't care for).

It's not like your getting one of those Soundtrack CD's that only
put 25 minutes of music on it.
1161.9"And I'm floating in a most peculiar way"AYOV10::DROBBBreaking rocks in the hot sun...Wed Apr 27 1988 09:1623
The point made about combining 'ChangesOne' and 'ChangesTwo' is
quite valid, and I think the total playing time would be pretty
damn close to the 75 mins. (is that still true?) maximum for a single
CD. However, let's be perfectly honest - there's no way in this
world that RCA are gonna market it in this manner, when they've
been coining in the cash for two separate releases for the last
X no. of years (on vinyl).

The same could well be said for those other RCA compilations, 'Golden
Years' and 'Fame And Fashion', albeit that these were released after
he'd dodged off to EMI America.

Here in the U.K., the TV company K-Tel released a passable (except
for the omission of 'Drive-In Saturday') "Best Of D.B." back in
1980 - however, since the LP was deleted a few years back, it's
unlikely that a companion CD will see the light of day.

One last point to ponder - a splendid b**tleg exists called
'ChangesThree' which features a marvellous selection of rare tracks
from (mainly) Bowie's pre-RCA days. Now, if they only find a way
    to get that officiallt released.....

Speaking as someone whose bought ChangesOne and not ChangeTwo (I
have the cassette, not the disc), if they had been available as
a combination set BEFORE I bought either, I'd have bought the
combo rather than opting for only ChangesOne.

Re. .13, you consider it good news that he's in the studio recording
a new album?!? I, for one, hope and pray that it's a whole lot
better than either of his last two efforts (TONIGHT and NEVER LET
ME DOWN), both of which I considered to be rather weak, esp. the
    latter.

With regards to the availability of his older (RCA) material on
CD, presently in the U.K. it is becoming more and more difficult
to track them down. Some specialist shops have (some of) them,
but having realised their 'rarity', are hiking the prices up to
c.15 ($27) per title!! Last I read, negotiations for the rights
to the RCA back catalogue were at a standstill - although I did
    see Rykodisc's name mentioned somewhere.

Reading through the latest issue of RECORD COLLECTOR magazine
(incidentally, I'd highly recommend this to any serious music buff),
I spotted an ad. by a mail-order outfit in England for 'the now-deleted
ZIGGY STARDUST' for the princely sum of 18 (c.$33)!!! How I wish
I'd snapped up a copy of all the early stuff when it was freely
available - at budget prices too!

Point of consolation - I'm sure I read in another Notesfile that
most of the RCA titles can still be found in Europe (I think
Switzerland was sited as a known example), although I don't know
what the prices are like there.

I just read in the CD notes of latest issue of Rolling Stone (the
one with Roy Orbison on the cover) that the 1968 recording of
"David Bowie" is going to be issued sometime in the next 3 months
on CD. I'm not sure if this is an RCA album (I would assume that
    it isn't).

    re .14:

I was one of the few people who enjoyed Bowie's last album, "Never
Let Me Down." I'm only 22, so I missed out on most of the music
that he created in his PRIME (early-mid 70's)...That's why I'm dying
to get any "early" Bowie recordings that I can...The only "early"
Bowie recordings that I have are "Low" (on cassette) and "Fame and
Fashion>>>Greatest Hits" on CD. I would appreciate any opinions
pertaining to which David Bowie albums are "favorites," or "the
best." I know "...Ziggy Stardust..." must be up there.

The old album was on DERAM, a DECCA label.

    I recommend "Aladdin Sane".
1161.19Andy, a further recommendation for ALADDIN SANE....AYOV28::DROBBHere at the dude ranch above the seaThu Jan 12 1989 03:3032
Yes, the DAVID BOWIE disc is indeed a Decca/Deram (London in the
U.S.?) release, of material recorded between 1966 and 1970. It's
just out here in the U.K., and I believe it's a budget-price job.
However, I'd say that this period of Bowie is an acquired taste,
so for the time being, I can wholeheartedly recommend the following
RCA titles (in preferred order) :-

THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS

    SCARY MONSTERS AND SUPER CREEPS

    HUNKY DORY

    STATION TO STATION

    ALADDIN SANE

Then of course, there's the LOW/HEROES/LODGER 'trilogy', DIAMOND
DOGS, PIN UPS, SPACE ODDITY, THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD, and the
    two CHANGES compilations.

If you can find them, I'm sure you'll enjoy - FWIW, I heard yesterday
that a lot of the RCA stuff is still in the shops Down Under.

One final point of trivia - one of the first Bowie releases on CD
anywhere in the world, was in Germany in 1983. Again, it was a
Deram compilation of early material, and it was issued in *very*
limited quantities. If anyone owns a copy, hang on to it - worth
around 75 ($135) in collectors circles already, and sure to increase
in value in the future ;-)

My favorite Bowie is the double live album. Perhaps it has something
to do with being recorded in the Tower theatre in Philadelphia (not
a bad seat in the house). The vinyl version is very dynamic for
a live recording - the musician on the sax is Excellent. I'd buy

Well as far as I know the only of David's live albums issued on
cd is STAGE (as a double cd) - I own a copy and I think it is
from w. germany - I am relatively sure that the cd was not released
    in the US.

As far as the availability of the RCA stuff in collector shops you
can find the titles going for between $30-$50 and I have yet to
see a copy of Ziggy. In the New England area I haven't seen a
new RCA title in a looong time. Although last month I did pick
up a used copy of ChangesTwo for a steep $10 (he he).

I haven't seen any bootlegs of Bowie stuff but would exect to see
a boot of the King Biscut show cds that are currently selling
at $350 for 2 discs. I would, however, love to see a boot cd
of the Slaughter on 24th St. (I think that's the name) - *DEFINATLY*
the best bowie boot (blows away the '72 show) - and I have at
    least 60 of them.

I would have to agree that the last album wasn't all to good.
But I think that TONITE was excellent - very relaxing - great.

The two promo cd eps from the last album are pretty good also.

Finally, Bowie HAS NOT yet signed a deal for hit back catalogue.
He was talking to EMI (whom I would not like see get the rights
due to their lousy packaging - see the US kate bush discs) but
now seems to be talking to Ryko Disc (for a long time) it seems
that they are talking about doing a release-a-month like the
Beatles discs and adding EXTRA TRACKS and B-SIDES to the discs -
that would be incredable - but to the best of my knowledge bowie
does not have too many unreleased tracks or b-sides - just
a very few alternative versions (Heroes) and a bunch of his
    songs sung in different languages.

    - as far as I know, the KBFH CDs have not yet been b**tlegged, but
with the prices as they are, it's only a matter of time....I sure
wouldn't like to be one of the first to buy a boot thinking it
      was an original :-(

    - the battle for the rights to his back catalogue rages on. Here
in the U.K. at least, latest reports say that the front-runners
are Polygram and EMI (incidentally, all future Bowie releases
for EMI will be on the EMI Manhattan label, as opposed to EMI
      America).

    - I learned from a new-ish U.K. Bowie fanzine (ZI DUANG PROVENCE -
title taken from the first line of the song GLASS SPIDER), that
Bowie has been considering releasing a (potentially) double album
of demos and outtakes, including selections from loads of material
which he recorded with Brian Eno.

    - Will, in -1, you stated that "to the best of my knowledge, Bowie
does not have too many unreleased tracks". Well, I don't know
about Bowie, but I certainly have plenty of material of his in
      this category - here's a sample :-

      THAT'S A PROMISE - late '60's outtake
      LITTLE TOY SOLDIER - " " "
      WAITING FOR THE MAN - " " "
      RIGHT ON MOTHER - early '70's "
      BOMBERS - " " "
      LONDON BYE-TA-TA - " " "
      RUPERT THE RILEY - " " "
      SHADOW MAN - " " "
      I'VE GOT LIGHTNING - " " "
      ALL THE YOUNG DUDES - 1973 "
      YOU DIDN'T HEAR IT - " "
      FROM ME
      TIRED OF MY LIFE - " "

Not bad for starters - there are *plenty* more. Most of the above
are of at least VG quality, and indeed some of them are perfect
studio quality (having been pressed direct from the master tapes
;-) If anyone would like to know any more details concerning this
unreleased stuff, don't be afraid to ask!!

    - one question before I sign off....what are the two promo CD EPs
mentioned in -1, and what is their price/availability?
