1144.0. "Sony CDP-21/ CDP-31 ?'s" by KELVIN::BLISS (DETAILS...) Fri Apr 08 1988 11:34

In brief - I need the insight of a few SONY CD-model watchers to
either confirm or put to rest my suspicion that there may be more
differences between models than has been suggested in the literature.

Due to an unfilled rain-check against the Magnavox CDB560 (no longer
available, see discussion elsewhere in these notefiles) I have the
opportunity to take $50 off the regular sale price of one of two
Sony CD models carried by Service Merchandise, the CDP-21 or CDP-31.

These notefiles suggest that good experiences have been had with
either the CDP-110 or the CDP-310. How about the models CDP-21 or CDP-31?

In the 1988 Buyer's Guide published by Stereo Review there are typical
spec. descriptions for two Sony CD players, CDP-110 and the CDP-310
after which there are line entries for the CDP-21 and CDP-31,
respectively. In each case the models are noted to be "similar to"
the CD player last described. In each case, the additional model
    "Lists" for an extra $10.

I've not had the opportunity to listen to either of these "twins"
side by side therefore I have no true basis for performance comparison.

However, the "also-ran" models, for which the summary noted the higher
list price, do NOT have headphone jacks. A compromise for more
money which runs against the grain. This, coupled with some mumblings
    from an otherwise non-technical-and-typically-untrustworthy-salesman-type
which suggested that the CDP-21's & CDP-31's were SONY's own cheap
    clones leaves me with reservations.

    Bottom line(s) : Is the Sony CDP-21 worth $150?
Is the Sony CDP-31 worth $180?

Any information, or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated
   at this point.

    Thanks,

1144.1No problems with mineCANDY::CASTIGLIONEWed Apr 27 1988 14:138
I own a Sony CDP-110 and have hundreds of hours on it. I haven't
had any problems what so ever. The features it had were fine for
what I wanted. I could have gone up one step and got the remote,
but nothing on my system is remote now. I might have liked the 5
disk Sony, but I've been real happy with this on. I bought it on
sale at Lechmere for $199 sometime ago..

I've got a CDP21 I bought in January and have been reasonably
happy with. The only thing I've noticed is that it will program
only 16 tracks. Also any track number over 18 gets --.-- in the
time of track space. (I may be doing something wrong.) It does hold
total time until you activate a control which my CDP510 does not.
