1138.0. "Want Current Views on Portables." by HPSRAD::KOMAR (Fiat Lux) Sat Apr 02 1988 21:38

    	I'm wondering about getting a portable CD player, particularly
    a walkman type. I'd like to get your recommendations, please.
    I've skimmed this conference, but none of the notes pointed to by
    keywords, (that I looked at) are from 1988 (Q3 FY88, that is)

    Q-audio, in Cambridge Mass., sells the "DT-3", and the "D-10", as I
    recall from a phone conversation. They go for about 250 to 325. I'm
    particularly interested in hearing about those models, and less
    expensive ones.

    	IF you send me mail, I'll "summarize to the net", in this case,
    this conference.

    My report on the Technics slpx7 still stands. See 1070.4 and .12.
    All things considered, it's done pretty well under constant use.

1138.2Sonys' Portables...CHOVAX::RULLOSun Apr 03 1988 14:3825

    I've been using a Sony D-10 since last July and couldn't be more
    pleased. At present I'm without a home unit and use my D-10 inside
    and out. It hasn't given me any problems at all. I also picked
    up an attachment for the car that consists of an arm attaching to
    the base of the passenger seat and a mounting plate that attaches
    to the other end of the arm. The plate absorbs any and all shock
    with rubber springlike pieces situated between the plate the player
    attaches to and the plate the arm attaches to. At first glance
    I was skeptical. It works like a charm. The connections between
    the player and the car are via the cigarrette lighter for power
    and an adapter that transfers the audio signal thru the tape heads
    of the cassette player in the car. As far as portables go, the
    D-10 is definitely one of the best for my bux. It has been dis-
    continued but can still be found if you look hard enough and for
    a good price too. Somewhere around $250. If you want more portability
    try the newest offering from Sony, the D-15. It comes with an internal
    nikad that fits into a compartment on its' underside. It makes
    for a light walkman type of player with approx. 2 hrs of playback.
    It can still be used with the battery pack (up to 6 hrs) that
    was supplied with the D-10 that I have. I believe you'll have to
    buy the battery pack extra with the D-15. Check the April issue
    of Digital Audio for more on this one.

    			Good luck - walt...

    	There are lots of reviews/recommendations in the AUDIO notes
    file. You might want to check there... (press kp7 to add).

1138.4D-3T's available for 197.99 at Lechmere.CTHULU::YERAZUNISHiding from the Turing PoliceMon Apr 04 1988 08:5714
    My D-7 (2+ years old) finally kicked the big one over the weekend.
    It won't even spin up the disk anymore.

    It's not the first time this machine has had problems. Usually
    I get it fixed, but it just ain't worth getting it repaired again.

    It's actually been a love-hate relationship from day 1.

    I'm not sure whether I should have it bronzed or I should pack the
    case full of gunpowder and blow it to smithereens.

    NB: I went to Lechmere's; they have the D-3T (CD +am/fmstereo) for
    197.99. I bought one. Works fine.
1138.5Cautiously OptimisticFULLER::MURRAYMon Apr 04 1988 11:569
    Just bought the Crown cd110 for $86 at Highland in Brighton. Sounds
    great. I don't know what the catch is (i.e.durability, sound quality,
    etc) but I'm sure I'll find out. But for that kind of money, the
    performance is impressive. Sounds great through headphones, not-so-hot
    (but still much better than analog) hooked up to the stereo.

    I'll keep you posted if it gives me any grief.

1138.6ToshibaTALLIS::MCINTYREMon Apr 04 1988 11:5910
    I am happy with the Toshiba (xlr-9437??). It is shaped like a horse
    shoe, and includes a fully digital am/fm stereo tuner. The tuner
    sounds as good as my 10 year old Onkyo tuner.

    Here's a little testimonial. The first week I had it, I dropped
    the unit onto a tile floor from about 5 feet (accidentally). I
    figured that that was the end of it. Remarkably, it had barely
    a scratch, and it continued to work perfectly. Now, with another
    month or so under its belt, it still works perfectly. It must be
    well-made to withstand that kind of shock. Tile floors are hard.
1138.7Sony D-3VOLGA::D_MONTGOMERYRaving LunaticsWed Apr 06 1988 07:319
    I've been using my Sony D-3 since December 1987, and I love it.
    I use it in my office with headphones, at home as my home unit,
    and in my truck when the roads aren't too bumpy. The unit sounds
    excellent - now I gotta get better headphones and a better amp for
    my truck!

    No problems whatsoever.

 Electric Gramaphone has been advertising a new set of speakers by
 Allison that contains a bulit in amp for use with CD players. Note
 that a recent issue of Fortune Magazine listed Allison speakers in
 a list of the 100 things that Made in America means Best in the World.

1138.9CBM 1000 on DAK close-out at $130REGENT::POWERSThu Jun 02 1988 07:588
The latest DAK catalog (summer '88) has a close-out price on the Citizen
CBM 1000 of $130. (This unit came out about 18 months ago at $150,
soon went to $170, and is now at close-out.)
DAK does tend to keep "close-outs" going for a while, but $130 for this
unit would seem to be a good price. I bought mine when I first
saw it, and I have no complaints so far.

    I was a bit amazed when I saw the Citizen advertised by DAK at $130.
    I bought the same player at Radio Shack for $60 more when it wasn't
    even listed by DAK.

    It is the exact same player except the Keypad is a different color
    and says Realistic cd-3100 instead of CBM 1000 on it.

    It has trouble if you want it to start at a track >6 or so but since
    I usually listen from 1 to x it doesn't bother me.

    Works well in the car and powers a pair of Sony full size headphones
    pretty well.

    BTW Radio Shack originally had the player at $280 but I bought it
    at close out for $169. I wish I'd waited for DAK :-)

    RE: .-1

    I seen the same trick done at Radio Shack on a tape deck that was
    exactly the same as a Sharp deck, except with the 'Realistic' brand
    name and a HIGHER price tag. Since they probably don't manufacture
    their 'Realistic' brand, I would guess that this is a common ploy.
