1106.0. "Airplane: 2400 Fulton Street" by PSYCHE::WILSON (We're Only Making Plans for Nigel) Tue Mar 01 1988 14:23

Does anyone else own the double Jefferson Airplane compilation,
    _2400 Fulton Street_?

I just picked it up and it sure does bring back memories. I wasn't
old enough to participate in the activism of the 60's, but as a
teenager I listened to the Airplane's early albums.

Good remastering of the tracks. Most of the music on these two CDs
    is over twenty years old.

    Some of the tracks include:

    It's No Secret
    Blues from an Airplane
    Somebody to Love
White Rabbit (featured in the movie ``Platoon'')
    Volunteers
    We Can Be Together
    Lather
    Martha
    Won't You Try (Saturday Afternoon)
    Comin' Back to Me
    Today
    Have You Seen the Saucers?
    Mexico
    Rejoyce
    Wooden Ships
    Embryonic Journey
    Good Shepherd

It's really amazing how much detail you can hear in the CDs,
especially on the _After Bathing at Baxter's_ songs, which,
if I remember right, were not sonically well represented on the LP.

What a band the Airplane was. Talented as hell.

Recording dates for all the tracks, who plays/sings what, and a
short history of the Jefferson Airplane is provided in a booklet.

I have this disc also. I was originally waiting for "Worst of ..."
to appear on CD, but I think this collection is as good or better.
    It's certainly larger.

I'm not the most critical person as far as sound quality goes, but
these all sound great to me. Not only does it bring back memories,
but it's given me a new appreciation of the Airplane. I like them
even better after listening to these.

Yeah, I have this one, too. I was old enough to enjoy the originals
during their initial popularity - and have even seen the original
Airplane on occasion in Golden Gate Park (freebies in those days).
Have even heard Signe (the original femme-lead) during and since
her brief stint with them. She had a better voice than Gracie, but
not as unique...very Baez-sounding - but perfect for their foray
    into folk.

The CD is remastered very well, and much that was lost on vinyl
versions, is now readily apparent on disc. I consider this a must
for the collection of any "child of the 60's." It'll definitely
bring back a few incense-clouded memories.

Is there any hint from the powers-that-be about the release of the
full albums, such as Baxter's, Volunteers, Bark, and the first Starship
release (to name a few)? As much as I've been tempted by Fulton
St., my hope of getting the whole albums has caused me to wait.

I have this one, too. Certainly brings back a lot of memories for me..
and it's a "must have" for the aging hippy in the family.

I happened upon "Blows Against the Empire" this week for $10.95 on RCA.
It claims to have been digitally remastered, and is marked ADD.

It most definitely sounds better than my copy of the LP. I've only
listened to it once, and was more involved in revisiting my college
days than considering the sound quality :-)

Just out of curiosity, is the by-line on the disc "Jefferson
Starship" or "Paul Kantner". My original LP (long worn out)
was by Jefferson Starship, but when I bought a fresh cassette
a few years back, it was labeled as being by Paul Kantner.

And I don't suppose I could hope that the CD contains the
    original weird booklet?

re .6: Are you sure you're remembering the right album? My album
copy of "blows against..." says "Blows against the empire - Paul
Kantner" on the spine, and says "Paul Kantner / Jefferson Starship"
on the front cover. And I don't have, nor do I remember, a wierd
booklet. There was a lot of wierd stuff on the inside record liner,
    though.

The CD says "Jefferson Starship - Blows against the empire" on the
side spine, and has the same front label as the album, except that
the writing is at the top, rather than at the bottom. All the nifty
silver artwork inside is gone, and so is the picture on the back
of the flying body parts towing a strange thing behind it. None
of the artwork from the record liner is there either. The album
has at least 3 drawings of some illegal wild plants, the CD has
none. But the music is still great!

Yes, I'm thinking of the same album. I'm sure that my copy of
the album had a booklet, rather than just an illustrated sleeve.
    I'll check, though.

    Re: .6-.8

Yes, there was a booklet included with the (original) LP which had
all the lyrics, a "plot" of sorts about hippies building a starship
to escape the Earth (pass that bong over, will ya , Paul??) and
even some nifty shots of pregnant Gracie in a nun's habit....

When the LP was reissued a few years back, they probably left the
    booklet out.

Now how about that neat booklet that came with "Sunfighter" ?????

Actually, they were going to *hijack* a starship, in a plot based
    (very) loosely on Heinlein's "Methusalah's Children." :-)

Looks like I was wrong (partly, anyways). I have the album in
front of me. The spine says "Paul Kantner", while the front
    cover says (below the title):

    			   "Paul Kantner"
    			"Jefferson Starship"

Of course, it was never really a "true" Jefferson Starship album
anyways, since it pre-dates the changing of the group's name from
Airplane to Starship by a few years. The name "Jefferson Starship"
was obviously just a one-time affectation to fit in with the sf
    theme.

Now, if they'll only release Kantner's 1983 "sequel": THE PLANET
EARTH ROCK AND ROLL ORCHESTRA ("The Empire Blows Back") on CD.
(I'll even settle for the totally unrelated -- it's not even by
Kantner -- INTERGALACTIC TOURING BAND. I'm not picky.)

Very good. I had heard the same answer, but I always wondered.
Actually, it involved 2 matches holding said roach, and a third
    to ignite the mess.

Actually, if I recall correctly, the plan was to wait until the
first starship is built and *then* hijack it. :-)

At any rate, I picked up the CD. Like many of the RCA "oldies",
it's been digitally re-mixed (says "ADD" right there on the back).
The signal level seems awfully low, but it sounds fine.

The booklet that comes with 2400 Fulton mentions something about
the Airplane getting their name from an old bluesman - Blind Thomas
    Jefferson Airplane, I think.

RE: divorced from orthography

Yes, the papers were completed as soon as I learned to hold a pencil.
And to think, I almost looked the word up...

It's interesting to hear about Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane.
I wonder which derivation was orignal and which was thought up later...
... or perhaps it was an intended double entendre.

    Re .3

Just received Volunteers from Noteworthy. The quality is good,
comparable to Blows Against the Empire.

    <Dept. of Flames>

Geez, for all the time it took to get this disc out, you'd think they'd
put a little bit of effort. In spite of the magical words ``Digitally
Remastered'', the sound is rather ordinary by cd standards. (Granted,
the Airplane/Starship folks were never into great sound, only very good
    music.)

But, to reiterate a familar complaint, the disc has _NO_ liner notes. I
gave away my copy of the lp (see another note) so I don't remember the
performers. I know that David Crosby was around. The keyboards sound
like Nicky Hopkins's work. Aside from that, I can only guess about the
non-Jeffersons. Inside, we have ads for other RCA cds. I mean, really!
The purchasers of this disc are going to be interested in ``Henry
    Mancini's Pure Gold'' and ``Jose Feliciano's All-Time Greatest Hits.''
1106.22"Volunteers" personnelOWSLEY::ABBOTDropping circle stones on a sundialTue Dec 13 1988 11:3139
I also got Volunteers on CD, and I am very disappointed at its quality,
or more appropriately, lack of it. To me, it sounds flat. The same cuts
on 2400 Fulton Street sound much better.

There was a request for the Volunteers personnel, which was omitted from
the CD notes. Here it is:

The band:
 Grace Slick
 Paul Kantner
 Marty Balin
 Jorma Kaukonen
 Jack Casady
 Spencer Dryden
with:
 Nicky Hopkins - piano
 Steven Stills - Hammond organ
Jerry Garcia - pedal steel guitar
 Joey Covington - percussion, chair
 David Crosby - music, sailboat
 Ace of Cups - vocals
   Mary Gannon, Marilyn Hunt,
   Diane Hursh, Denise Jewkes

By contrast, the remixing done to Burgers is excellent. Supposedly it was
done by the same person. As for me, I'm keeping my old record of Volunteers.
It sounds better. I hope they do a better job whenever they get around to
doing After Bathing At Baxters.

I think it may have something to do with the new owners - BMG Music. They
don't seem to be very committed to quality. Even their reissue LP's look
cheap (as if the old RCA Victor "Best Buy" series wasn't!).

This goes down in the list of CD blunders, along with the mono Beatles
CD's, the A&M rechanneled Procol Harum, "Cathedral" on CSN, Blonde on
Blonde, etc.
