1098.0. "What is your favorite HANDEL music???" by BPOV09::JMICHAUD (Think about software that thinks!) Thu Feb 25 1988 10:56

Ok all you HANDEL music lovers. I am interested in purchasing more
music by this composer. I have the Royal Fireworks and Watermusic
compositions. I enjoy them very much. To give you an idea as to
what I am looking for, I will give you an idea as to what my
musical taste is like. I enjoy mucic by Mozart,Haydn,Telemann,
Pachelbel,Fasch. I do not like vocals in classical music. Now
what is your favorite Handel music. Is the Concerti Grossi op#??
as good as the above mentioned. Which versions should I be looking
for and by whom. Almost all of my Haydn is done by Solti/London.
Almost all of my Mozart is done by Marriner/St. Martins/Philips.
I have nothing by Pinnock or Hogwood. What are some of your
suggestions? I have a great deal of classical music. Just not that
much from Handel. Any help out there?

Thanks..john

1098.1Here's twoAIAG::BILLMERSMeyer Billmers, AI ApplicationsThu Feb 25 1988 12:526
Two favorites (it's hard to just pick out a few:)

Don't miss the Dettingen Te Deum. I have an old Nonesuch vinyl disc, don't
know what's available on CD though.

Archive 2 CD set of the Organ concertos. Heavenly!
1098.2Handel <==> PinnockSTAR::BIGELOWBruce Bigelow, DECnet-VAXThu Feb 25 1988 13:1317
Well, you already have the Firewirks music, but some of my favorite
Handel are the two Concerti a due Cori that are packaged with the
Fireworks on the Archiv 415 129-2 by Pinnock/English Concert. These
are the Concerti a due Cori #2 & #3. There is a Loiseau-Lyre CD
by Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music that has all 3 Concerti
a due Cori, but I haven't heard it, so I can't give it an up or
a down.

Also, the 12 Concerti grossi Op. 6 by Pinnock/TEC (3 CDs: 410
897,8,9-2) are among my all time favorites, along with Bach's
Brandenburgs. The 6 Concerti grossi Op. 3 (413 727-2) are nice, but
not as good as the Op. 6. Probably because Handel was less mature
when he wrote them. The Trio Sonatas (415 497-2) are also very
nice. All of these are Pinnock/English Concert, except the one
Hogwood/AAM I mentioned. Basically, if it's Handel and Pinnock,
you won't go wrong, but some are (of course) better than others.

1098.4Try some Oboe MusicELWD2::WAXMANThu Feb 25 1988 20:088
I strongly recommend the Oboe Sonatas
Handel Trio Sonatas with Holliger and Bourge on Oboe by Denon
or
The Oboe Sonatas Vol 1 & 2 produced by Capriccio
Another great disk is Archiv 415 291-2 which contains a number of
oboe concerto's including "Alexander's Feast"

1098.5I agree with the othersNCADC1::PEREZPeople are Hell -- Sartre'Sat Feb 27 1988 21:3112
I agree with the previous replies. I have

Concerti a Due Cori by Hogwood and the Academy of ancient music

Alexander's Feast / Oboe Concertos by Pinnock and the English Concert

6 Concerti Grossi Op. 3 by Pinnock and the English Concert

All of them are pure Handel, up to the standards of the Royal Fireworks and
Watermusic, and all sound terrific.

Meyer,

Are you referring to the op 4 or op 7 organ concertos? I think
both are 2 CD sets.

Op. 4. My recording (which I *adore*) is

Archiv 413465-2 Concertoes for Organ Op. 4
Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert

Highly recommended.
1098.8Op. 7 + suitesCESARE::MUGGIAMon Mar 07 1988 05:428
Try also op. 7 (2 CD from Archiv).
I like very much the great harpsicord suites, but they are on normal
records (2 LPs) made by Archiv. Sometimes the player (Colin Tilney)
could be more lively, but some Allemandas are enchanting.
DGG is transferring most of old recordings on CD, so that the suites
might be published in CD.

Has anyone encountered a disc with "Overature for Xerxes" on
it. Possibly by the Rome Philharmonic.
