1094.0. "The Firebird..Stravinsky" by FACT01::LAWRENCE (Jim/Hartford A.C.T.,DTN 383-4523) Tue Feb 23 1988 14:17

    I bought Stravinsky's The Firebird with the Atlanta Symphony on
    the recommendation of Digital Audio magazine. I didn't have a copy
    and they gave it a 10/10 which very few get. Well, it's just wonderful
    and I am very glad I went for it. The performance and engineering
    are indeed flawless. Absolutely teriffic. I love it...

1094.1What about DSO with Dorati on DECCA?UTRTSC::MORAALThe ...... of this storyWed Feb 24 1988 03:494
    I don't know this one. Who is the conductor. I myself have the DSO
    recording with Antal Dorati. Despite his age (81) a brilliant con-
    ductor. I am fond of this recording, as I am of his 'Le Sacre du
    printemps'.
1094.2No way, Jose...FACT01::LAWRENCEJim/Hartford A.C.T.,DTN 383-4523Wed Feb 24 1988 11:356

    No, don't do it. The DSO version is not as good. The "must buy"
    version is the ASO version.

    I have the TELARC version, but cannot remember the orchestra, perhaps
    Kunzel/Cincinnati, but I'll go home and check ... It is an awesome
    recording tho'...

    I'll try and check out the ASO version, check it out from the library
    ...

    Uh, just a minute. Before you all rush out and by the Telarc
    (Big Bass Drum) recording of the Firebird, please note that it is
    the Firebird SUITE, not the complete ballet. If that's all you want,
    then fine. If you want the whole ballet, look elsewhere.

1094.6Any ideas on the whole thingKYOA::MIANOSlava Iskusstvu, Vovyeki Slava!Mon Mar 07 1988 12:027
One more vote for the ATLANTA version. One interesting thing about that
recording is that it was the very first commercial orchestra recording.

I just got the score to the complete ballet so I would like to get
some recommendations for recordings of the complete ballet.

    If you want to listen to a very contempary interpretation try -

    	The Firebird Suite - Tomita

    This is produced entirely on Synths. It will also strech your hardware.

1094.9Directed by Robert Shaw.FSTRCK::SATTERFIELDIf all men were brothers who would your sister marry?Fri Jan 27 1989 17:278
    The Telarc disk of Strvinsky's Firebird Suite is by the Atlanta
    Symphony and is directed by Robert Shaw. It is a great performance
    with unmatched sound but the coupling of Borodin's Polovatsian
    Dances may be even better. It includes the choral part as you
    would expect with Shaw as the director. Once you've heard this
    version it is difficult to enjoy any performance that excludes the
    chorus.

1094.10Where can I buy the disc ?ELWOOD::KAPLANLsmarm: that which is smarmyFri Jan 27 1989 20:2115
    Re: .9

    I wholeheartedly agree. I purchased the Robert Shaw/Atlanta version on
    vinyl when it first came out. Indescribable. I used to wait until my
    wife went out, then turn off the lights, crank the amplifier up to
    "11" - just a step less than where the walls would shake.

    	Sigh.

    	Those were the days...
