1093.1 | "Out of this World" by John Williams | SYSENG::COULSON | Roger Coulson DTN 223-6158 | Tue Feb 23 1988 10:50 | 7 |
| I have a disk by John Williams of the Boston Pops doing several
movie themes from space type movies (E.T., Return of the Jedi,
Battlestar Galactica, etc). It is called "Out of this World".
I like it very much.

| Almost all of John Williams themes have been issued either by
Soundtrack [Star Wars, ET, etc] or on a collection type basis
by the Boston Pops on the Phillips label. Most of his early stuff
such as Earthquake, I have not seen. There is also a MCA Soundtrack
Collection out which includes Williams ET, and The River Themes.
If you want I will get you the exact titles. I have all the records
and a few Cd,s of Williams.
On the other two, you might try Publishers Centeral Buearu cataloq.
If you don,t get it I can list the Address so you can get on their
mailing list.
It is electronic music but I highly recommend "Bachbusters" by
Dorsey on the Telarc Label. However I am sure that a good classical
cd store will have Bach on Harpsicord soon.

1093.6 | These are my choice... | STAR::BIGELOW | Bruce Bigelow, DECnet-VAX | Tue Feb 23 1988 11:37 | 29 |
| Scott Joplin: I have Nonesuch 9-79159-2, which isn't DDD, if that's
what you meant by modern, but it is excellent. Joshua Rifkin on
the piano. This is a distillation of 3 LPs, combined onto one CD
with 7 of the less popular rags left off. I believe it contains
17 titles and is over 70 minutes long. I love it.
Performance: A Sound: B+ (a little hiss, no clipping)
Bach: Any of the Bach Harpsichord stuff on Archiv by: Trevor Pinnock
(solo), Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert, Kenneth Gilbert
(solo)
What I can recommend are:
415-112-2 Two part and Three part Intentions (K. Gilbert)
419-426-2 Little Preludes (K. Gilbert)
415-130-2< Goldberg Variations (T. Pinnock)
410-500-2 Brandenbergs 1-3 (Pinnock/TEC)
410-501-2 Brandenbergs 4-6 (Pinnock/TEC)
415-991-2< Harpsichord Concerti BWV 1052-4 (Pinnock/TEC)
415-992-2< Harpsichord Concerti BWV 1055-8 (Pinnock/TEC)
415-131-2 Concerti for 2 Harpsichords (Pinnock/Gilbert/TEC)
400-041-2 Concerti for 3 & 4 harpsichords (Pinnock/Gilbert/etc./TEC)
415-493-2 Six Partitas (T. Pinnock) (2 CDs)
413-439-2 Well Tempered Clavier books 1&2 (K. Gilbert) (4 CDs)
All of the above are DDD except the ones marked with "<", which
are AAD, but high quality anyway. Performance is A in all of the
above. Sound varies from A to B+.

| re: .-1 & .-2
In general the Williams stuff on Philips is the Boston Pops
conducted by Williams. The Telarc's will probably be Erich
Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
One of the EMI/Angel discs of Joplin is performed by Katie
and Marielle Labeque on two pianos. It also have some other
ragtime music by other composers. I think the other EMI/Angel
disc duplicates some of the pieces for orchestra.

1093.10 | Titles for CDs in 1093.8? (and a possible correction) | HUMAN::BURROWS | Jim Burrows | Sun Mar 20 1988 17:18 | 23 |
| RE: 1093.8
Would you care to give the titles of the 5 CDs you listed the
Scott Joplin rags off of, either here or in my note 1123, which
I wrote before I found this discussion?
The unique numbers listed in your note are:
EMI CDC 7 47093 2 (C)
EMI CDC 7 47199 2 (C)
MCA MCAD-1625 (C)
Nonesuch 9 79159-2 (C)
Philips 822.406-2 (C)
I definitely have one of these--the EMI 47199, which is Digital
Ragtime. I suspect I have another of the CDs you're refeing to
and that you typoed the number. You list Phillips 822.406-2 as
containing "Maple Leaf Rag" as its only Scott Joplin piece. I
have a CD--Claude Bolling's Ragtime Boogie-Woogie Jazz Classics,
which is Phillips 822 506 2. Could you have mistyped the "5" as
a "4"?

| You may be right about the 4/5 switch. I'll get titles and
double check the number tonight. I might also have a couple
of other Ragtime discs that don't have Joplin on them.
|
1093.12 | Typos corrected, titles listed. | COOKIE::ROLLOW | Be Bad or Be Management. | Mon Mar 21 1988 21:29 | 31 |
| In no particular order the titles are:
EMI CDC 7 47199 2 - Digital Ragtime, performed by Joshua
Rifkin - Wallstreet Rag ,The Southland Stingers.
EMI CDC 7 47093 2 - Gladrags, Compositions by Scott Joplin,
George Gershwin & Will Donaldson, James P. Johnson
performed on two pianos by Katia & Marielle Labeque,
arrangements by Francois Jeanneau.
Phillips 822.506-2 - "Ragtime Boogie-Woogie Jazz Classics",
Claude Bolling (yes it is 506 instead of 406).
MCA MCAD 1625 - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - The Sting.
Nonesuch 9 79159-2 - Scott Joplin Piano Rags - Performed by
Joshua Rifkin.
Another disc that has some ragtime, but no Joplin is:
Nonesuch 79006-2 - Paul Jacobs plays Blues, Ballads & Rags,
American Music for Piano by William Bolcom, Aaron
Copland, Frederick Rzewski.
Another interesting disc you might want to try:
Ivory Records IRD 9188 - Sandy Owen, Boogie Woogie, Rhythm &
Blues - Ensemble & Solo Piano.
ragtime discs that didn't have any Joplin on them are:
