For most of his early career Nat King Cole fronted a jazz trio of piano,
guitar and bass. In August/September 1956 he recorded the After Midnight
sessions featuring guest artists Willie Smith, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Stuff
Smith and Juan Tizol. Capitol has released the original recording and
included 6 additional selections, previously unreleased, from the original
sessions. The total time comes in at 60 minutes 24 seconds and every minute
is a gem.
The recording is monaural and the disc is ADD! Considering the state of
the art in '56 these recordings are so clean it's hard to believe they were
done 32 years ago. Certainly, they have benefited from the technology of
the eighties.
Along with this I have also found two other wonderful recordings of the Nat
King Cole Trio. The first is on Delta and features the trio from the years
1943 through 1949. The second is Nat King Cole - Early 1940's on Mark56.
Pleasantly, I was surprised by the very good quality of all these CDs. The
Delta recording is taken from acetates used for Radio Broadcasts during the
40's. The second CD is of the same time frame ('40 to '44) and the same
source material. Of these two the quality of the Delta release is the
better but both feature 56 and 58 minutes, respectively, of great music.
The Complete After Midnight Sessions is my favorite of the three but it
really is a hard thing to do, to pick a favorite.
Jazz Guitar fans will also enjoy these recording as they feature some
marvelous work by Oscar Moore, Irving Ashby and John Collins. Cole managed
to find some of the best guitarists in the business to work with.
I highly recommend these recordings to everyone. Not only do you get that
marvelous voice but also some very great piano and guitar work that belongs
in the hall of fame. There's just too much here to talk about individual
tunes but suffice it to say that it's really hard to go wrong with these
three.

Are these recording availiable on vinyl? If not, think I may have
finally found an ex -er reason- for buying a CD player. Nat King
Cole is my altime favorite performer! I was lucky enuf to see him
live in Boston c1951 when it was still the King Cole Trio.

I believe they are though it may take some hunting.
The After Midnight Sessions are more than likely readily available,
however, the CD offers the 5 or 6 extra cuts that would not be
available on the vinyl version.
