1088.0. "Smaller size CD compatibility" by STAR::JACOBI (Paul Jacobi - VAX/VMS Development) Tue Feb 16 1988 16:09

    Please reply to this note if you have successfully played one of
    the new SMALLER size "DELOS Pocket CDs" in you player. Please state
    the model and whether the player required the use of an adapter.

1088.1OK on my TechnicsSYSENG::COULSONRoger Coulson DTN 223-6158Wed Feb 17 1988 05:4315
    I have one of those small CDs. It is not a DELOS but rather a sampler
    from DMP; it contains 20 minutes of JAZZ music. I first tried it
    with the adapter but it would not load because I did not have it
    in the adapter perfectly. When I got it in the adapter it played
    OK. I have a Technics SLP-120? (not sure the model number but it
    is current). I tried it again WITHOUT the adapter; I just put it
    in the middle of the tray. I WORKED just fine. I then tried it
    several more times moving the CD around on the tray. If it is not
    relatively near the middle of the tray it will not even try to load
    it; in fact it acts like there was no disk there at all. I suggest
    that if you have a loading tray with the "U" shaped opening just
    put it near the middle and go for it; I'll bet it works just fine.

1088.2Later model are betterMQFSV2::LEDOUXOnly 22.2 years before retirementWed Feb 17 1988 10:1427

	 I know of 3 models:

	 Sony CDP-70  (Pretty old model)
	 	 With Adaptor, won't even fit properly.
	 	 There is 3 plastic pins that support
	 	 normal cd when in the drawer, unfortunally
	 	 these pins fit exactly in the space between
	 	 the disc and the adaptor.
	 	 If you put the pins right over the 3 contact
	         points of the disc/adaptor you can load it and
	 	 play it (it works) but when you take it out,
	 	 the pins go into the holes again and "funny
	 	 noise" before the drawer spit it out all
	         crocked.
	         I am real scared that the adapter/disc separate
	 	 in the unit when comming out like that.

	 Portable Toshiba XR-P9
	 	 Without adapter, may play 1st and 2nd cut,
	 	 then start skipping (could never get the 6th
	 	 to play at all).
	 	 With adapter, plays fine.

	 Portable Technics (recent model)
	 	Plays fine with/without adapter.
1088.3The $4 CD (single) emergesISWISS::SALLOWAYSuspicion breeds confidenceWed Feb 17 1988 10:5211
    If you mean the 3" CD Single, I bought the Frank Zappa, Peaches
    en Regalia. It is 13 minutes long. It plays, with the adaptor,
    on the Pioneer CD Changers. Material with the CD says it will play
    without the adaptor, on all portable models, and most drawer models.
    I've heard that Sony intends to market these small CDs heavy for
    the early-teen crowd, and will probably have an inexpensive CD Single
    -only player available by the end of the year. If that is true,
    it will surely kill the stillborn CD-V, Video CDs, which require
    an expensive player and hold the same amount of audio programming.

1088.4Mini CDs....Potential RipoffAQUA::ROSTI'll buy you a cherry phosphateTue Feb 23 1988 11:3420

    Just picked up the Zappa "Peaches" CD single and the Shape
    Optimedia/Ryko adapter. Haven't been home yet, I'll report on it
    tomorrow.....

    However, next to Frank sat a Ray Charles on Dunhill....one track,
    all of 3:38. Price??? $5.99!!!!! Frank has 13 minutes at $3.99.

    Ugh!! For four bucks if I get 10-20 minutes of music it's a good
    deal relative to both 45 and LP prices. But three minutes for six
    bucks????

    Sounds like the record manufacturers are trying to figure out how
    to buy into the youth market, by selling cheaper CDs.

    BTW the Shrewsbury, MA Strawberries had only Frank and Ray but the
    clerk said their Framingham store had "quite a few" others???
    What other minis have folks seen???

    Other minis seen in the UK include Level 42 and String tracks.
1088.6It's OK With Harmon/Kardon, TooAQUA::ROSTI'll buy you a cherry phosphateWed Feb 24 1988 06:5430
OK, I ran the Zappa mini-CD with the Shape Optimedia adapter last night in
my Harmon/Kardon HD500, no problems at all. Forget about using it without
the adapter in an H/K, it jams the drawer!!!

The adapter itself is similar to those ridiculous 45rpm "spiders" we all
used to know and love (if you're as old as me, that is) except it mounts
to the outside of the disc rather than the inside. I have my doubts that
after a few hundred attachments, you won't have scratched at least one
disk, it doesn't seem to "pop" in easily, but maybe as it breaks in, it
will get easier.

The CD itself is 3-1/8 inches in diameter. Ryko attaches it to a card, 9"
by 3-3/8" which is shrinkwrapped with the disk in view. I was thinking
how cheap they were to not include a sleeve. Well, the sleeve is attached
to the card and folded over onto the back. It tears off (the joint is
semi-perforated). The little sleeves (3-3/8" square) look like Cracker
Jack prizes or something. I guess we'll just have to get used to it!!!

Sound of course was usual Ryko quality...that is, top notch.

I can't wait to see what else will be available in this format. Hopefully
other labels will be as generous as Ryko (13 minutes for 4 bucks!!!).
Anyone heard what the maximium storage on the minis is??? Since the
surface area is about half that of a full-size CD (if I remember my
math....the ratio of diameters is roughly 1.5, square that and you get
about 2) I would think you could get 20-30 minutes onto one!!!!!

    I bought a Delos mini, but haven't played it yet because I can't
    find an adapter. The store didn't have any. My Sony CDP-510
    won't take it without the adaptor. (Supposedly, the only model
    that will at the moment is the CDP-750, this according to Digital
    Audio.)

    The maximum playing time is around 20 minutes.

1088.8CHIRPA::OUELLETTEBut what about the R.O.U.S.Wed Feb 24 1988 10:538
Well, the sony CDP-510 will take it if you position the disk just right.
One of my housemates has been able to load the little CD (cd) by putting
it slightly off center in the drawer (back of center).

I can get one to load into my CDP-30 by standing the disk on the two
rear legs, with the front of the cd resting behind the front leg.

        My Sony D5 portable plays my one mini-CD just fine. Now if I can
        just get the storage case they didn't include in the package...

    Finally got the Ryko/Shape adapter and played my Delos mini-disc
    (Vivaldi Four Seasons excerpts) on the CDP-510 just fine. It's
    a pain, though - I would be inclined to leave the CD in the adapter
    all the time. And the storage case I did get has no place for a label!
