| These are three very different players at very different price
ranges. The Sony is the best player in my opinion, but is also
more expensive.

| The Magi is $480, The Sony is $600 and a Denon 1500 is on sale for
$599 this week at Tweeter. This is the price range I am looking
for. Natural Sound also mentioned a Denon DCD1400. Thanks for the
input Steve.
PS. the first two prices are list.

1087.3 | One Vote for Sony | CRETE::CASHMAN | | Wed Feb 17 1988 10:25 | 9 |
| I cast my vote for Sony. I did my research through this notes
file and I'm very pleased with my Sony CDP-350.
If you haven't read note 1070 in this file, I suggest you do. It's
devoted to repair costs of CD players. Most of the noters who own
Sony seem to be pleased.
Be sure to let us know who wins your election!

1087.4 | Maggie has a newer series | YOUNG::YOUNG | | Wed Feb 17 1988 12:42 | 6 |
| You might want to consider one of the Maggie 47x series. The transport
is different (and supposedly better). I have the 473 and am quite
happy with it, for $300 on sale.

| Most, if not all, of the Denon DCD-1500 owners in this conference have
been very, very happy with their players - I'm one of them. I think
what is now available is a 1500 Model II. I don't know how it differs
from the original 1500, and if the differences are for better, for
worse, or negligible.

Hi, I am one of those escapees from the AUDIO notes conference.
I just went through a CD player upgrade and spent about a hundred
hours listening to various players. Although I bought a SONY 605ESD,
I have input on the other choices.
Of the 3 you mentioned, I prefer the SONY 505. By the way, the
ES series is definitely a cut above the standard SONY line although
all SONY units are very good. You may want to jump over to the
DSSDEV::AUDIO notes conference for a much more detailed discussion
on this topic. There are literally dozens of notes and hundreds
of replies on this subject.
While at Natural Sound waiting for the "A" room to audition the
705 and 605 units, I spent a pleasant half hour with the Denon 1500
II and the SONY 505ESD. The 505 won, having better bass definition
and a more extended high end. Don't get me wrong, the 1500 was
pretty good, although I don't understand why Digital Audio magazine
went nuts over it. The SONY is certainly better and about the same
cost at NS.
The Mags are very well known for their quality sound in the cheap
CD player category. What you will not get is a solidly built unit.
They are built on those old flimsy Phillips chassis with the drawers
that are like floppy disks. If you want a unit for ten years, don't
get the Mags. But for the money the new 4XX series can't be beat.
I would spring for the 505. Built like a tank, very functional
and great sound (not world class though).
Regards, Jim

1087.7 | Denon DCD-1500 Mk I vs. Mk II | STKHLM::LIDEN | CDs look as good as they sound | Mon Mar 14 1988 00:52 | 19 |
| Re: .5
The Denon DCD-1500 Mk II has quadruple oversampling as
compared to the Mk I that "only" has double oversampling. I
also believe Mk II has a digital (optical?) output and a new
disc drive assembly which enables faster access times between
tracks.
Apparently Denon wanted to continue using the same name for
one of their new models since the old model has been very
successful.
I own a DCD-1500 Mk I myself and am very pleased with it.
There probably are newer models that are better in many
respects, but that isn't very surprising since the original
DCD-1500 is well over two years old by now.
I can't comment on the quality of the Sony, but if you do buy
the Denon unit I'm sure you'll be pleased with it.
