1066.0. "copy tapes or use a port. cd pl." by CIMAMT::CHINNASWAMY () Mon Jan 25 1988 06:39

    OK, Here goes.

I am in the market for a cassete deck, I think. The only reason
i want it is to copy my cds over and be able to listen to them in
my car. I have heard a lot of talk about some adapters which allow
you to use a portable cd player and plug it into your car. I don't
really have the time to look through a thousand notes so if someone
can refer me to another note it will also help. But, my question
is: which would be sonically better? A portable cd playing through
an adapter or a tape (from an average say $300 deck) made from a
cd and then played in the car. I guess I fear the adapter because
of the old cassete to 8-track adapters I used to hate. I have made
some copies of my cds on tape using my girlfriends el-cheapo deck
and they sound fine. My car unit is a Mazda factory unit. It looks
like a seperates unit with a tuner/tape/and amp eq. The speakers
are soon to be replaced because I blew one resently. I don't presently
own a portable cd player so I will be spending the same amount of
money either way. Hopefully your input will help me make the right
    choice.

    thanx
    mano

I myself have done both. And to tell you the truth ya can't really
tell the difference when driving. Parked with the engine off you
can here a small difference with the adapter/CD combo being a little
clearer. I like the adapter, probably more of a novelty than anything
else. There is also a fair amount of hassle with a cig lighter
adapter for power, cassette adapter for sound, and changing the
CD's in the player while driving. Cassette's definately have the
advantage here. If your into novelties, gadgets, *toys* then go
spend $20 and get you a cassette adapter. The one from Radio Shack
seems to do the trick quite well.

You will find that unless you use the "top of the line" speakers
that you can tell very little if any difference in a quality recorded
tape or a cd. Reason is, cars are just to small and to loud to
give you the same sound as your house stereo. I also tape my cd's
to play in the car and have also tried a portable cd player. I
couldn't really tell the difference (I have a Nakamichi BX125 cassette
deck). Portable cd players are also a pain in the car, much more
so than one that is built into the dash. My opinion.

I can tell a very noticeable difference in my car between cassettes
and CD's. I don't have any fabulous speakers, just $125 or so Kenwoods.
When I had my in-dash cassette deck/tuner installed I had the cd
input routed over into my glovebox. Thus I can put my portable cd
player in the glovebox and run the line out cables into the cd input.
Works very well, sounds much better than cassettes, plus I have
another cd player I can use for travelling, etc.

I too could hear a significant difference between tapes and the
Recoton cassette adapter to my D-5. But the convenience of the
tapes is an overwhelming advantage for me.
