Anybody care to review "Sign O' the Times" by Prince. I understand that it received a grammy nomination (but so did "BAD" by MJ). I guess what I'm getting at is can this album by Prince be mentioned in the same sentence as something like "The Joshua Tree" by U2? Thanks for your opinions. mb

1061.1 | My review-- "It's funky" | XCUSME::MAKARAWICZ | Mon Jan 18 1988 19:52 | 33
mb, I'm not an album critic (but I play one on TV). However, I would strongly recommend "Sign O' the Times" to any Prince fan. Rolling Stone Magazine gave it a very favorable review last summer. The only negative thing that they had to say about it was that it didn't really make much of a "statement." Personally, I could care less about Prince making a "statement." Rolling Stone did give the album a compliment, saying that the songs (although they were not Prince's best), were better than anything that is now playing on the radio (is that a compliment?). Personally, I feel that "Sign O' the Times" is his best album to date. "Sign O' the Times" is much like Prince's 1999 album, in that he plays most of the instruments himself, giving the album a more "stripped down" sound. However, this doesn't take away anything at all from his music. Actually, I like his music better when he's playing most of the instruments; it's FUNKIER. Of course, Prince does get some dirty lyrics in this album, (especially in the track "If I was your girlfriend") but the beat of the songs is what stands out. I believe that the ultimate compliment to Prince whould be to say that he is as talented as he is horny (can I say that Mr. Moderator?). I hope this review helped. I initially purchased "Sign O' the Times" on cassette (not willing to risk $30 on CD)," but I've enjoyed the album so much, that I ordered the CD through the CBS compact disk club. So if you want my cassette, it's yours. -Ron- (Ooooops!!! -- rm)
1061.2 | Lovesexy | JAIMES::REDICK | the _cooler_ cats @ Bartle & Jaimes | Wed May 18 1988 21:37 | 14 |
a continuation... Just picked up a copy of Prince's "Lovesexy" with the highly exaggerated naked cover...(personally i think the photo in the "1999" album was far sexier but that's just *my* opinion :-) Anyway, it seems that the CD is "continuous play". The songs contained in the CD are distinctly named and separated by silence but you are not able to advance a track etc. "Lovesexy" is great work by Prince but I feel that this "continuous play" feature is just plain aggravating... tlr

Now *that* is strange. Perhaps the CD is defective (i.e. the "index blocks" are screwed up)? Have you tried a second copy? --- jerry
1061.4 | Strange...but not defective | ISTG::CRAGG | It's time for a coffee break!! | Thu May 19 1988 11:17 | 6 |
re .3 No, unfortunately it's not defective, just irritating. I'm quite sure that Prince just did it to be different. Besides it did make me listen to the album from beginning to end...no doubt exactly what Prince intended :-). |
