1037.0. "Samplers" by MEMORY::SLATER () Mon Jan 04 1988 08:47

    I just picked up two "Samplers" from Enigma and Sire
    and liked most of the material.

    However they both were apparently bad pressings. The Enigma had
    severe drop outs on the last track and the Sire had severe drop
    outs on the last three tracks and got lost on the last track.

    Are these common problems with "Samplers"?

    There was some concern early in this conference that quality might
    drop as the technology got more competitive. Does anybody have a
    feel for this now?

    Do any players give statistics on raw errors of media, how many
    were successfully corrected, how many (maybe subtle) fills, and finally,
    how many drop outs?

    If these machines have uProcessors and some memory they could certainly
    store errors and calculate statistics. They could display some stats
    on readout or through RS-232 or whatever. Even a flashing light
    when errors were detected would be a great help. Threshold could
    be set for raw errors or non corrected errors or whatever.

1037.1NAD has a player with LED error displayFROST::EDSONDTue Jan 05 1988 06:316
    The newest NAD player, I forget the model number, has an LED that
    lights when an error occurs. According to some reviewer of this
    player, the light stays on most of the time, and when it hits a
    really bad spot the light gets brighter.

    That's funny I have both of these and mine are both fine.
    Looks like you have 2 bad pressings.

1037.3I said yes to Sire's "Just say Yes"GCANYN::MACNEALBig MacFri Jan 15 1988 10:2915
    This could either go here or the low price CD note I guess...

    I picked up Sire Records Winter Sampler called 'Just Say Yes'. Pretty
    good compilation of new-wave (? do they still call it this?) stuff by
    Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, Aztec Camera, Ramones, The Smiths,
    and a few others. There are 12 songs in all for about 64 minutes of
    playing time. Some of the mixes used on this disk are different than
    the original albums (e.g. Echo & the Bunnymen's 'Lips Like Sugar' is
    listed as the 12" mix, a few others are labeled as remixes). All of
    this was only $7.99 at Strawberries. And to think I have paid $15+ for
    disks that had only 30+ minutes of music on them.

    To answer the base note, I have had no problems with the samplers I
    have purchased. I have both of Philipp's 'Hear the Light' disks, a
    Windham Hill sampler, and this Sire sampler.
1037.4Just Say YoSWSNOD::SALLOWAYJeux Sans FrontiresWed Aug 17 1988 14:1410
    Volume 2 of Just Say Yes has just been released from Sire records.
    It's called Just Say Yo and has a picture of a REAL bunny on the
    cover, not Bugs this time. It continues the tradition of fine new
    artists you might not see or hear about elsewhere. Included were
    A House, Housemartins, Depeche Mode, Ofra Haza, and others, 14 in
    all. I can print the entire list if desired. A great value, only
    $5.93 from Noteworthyu for over 60 minutes.

    	I like many people who have CDs, tried out a large number of
    the Samplers. I tend to buy the lower priced stuff or wait untill
    it goes on sale. Some lables I would reccommend:

    		RYKO - Steal this disk Vols. One and Two
                Good stuff, I don't know what musical catergory
    		this fits into but there are a few good songs
    		on both volumes.

    		NARADA - Vols One thru Five
    		Most of this stuff is very easy to listen to. It
    		is called "New Age" but is very remminicent of
    		'mood' music from movies. It is so good that I
    		have purchased a number of the CDs.

    		PRO-ART - Go For The Gold, and others
    		This label is okay but I would not think that a
    		serious classics buff would buy too much from this
    		company as the artists recording for them are not
    		exactly household names. Good for background listening.

1037.6Island's Anniversary SetFRAGLE::MACNEALBig MacThu Oct 20 1988 09:194
    I strongly recommend Island Records Anniversary collection. There is
    some real good stuff in this collection ranging from early Traffic to
    U2. It covers a good cross section of contemporary music as well with
    cuts from reggae artists to rockers.
1037.7Where is "Hole in My Shoe"??AQUA::ROSTCanned ham, that's for meThu Oct 20 1988 09:368
    re: .6

    Too bad the thing is so darned expensive (2 CDs, ya know...about
    $20 is the best I've seen). Still the only place to get Traffic's
    "Paper Sun" on CD.

1037.8Should be cheaper than that!MQOFS::LEDOUXReserved for Future UseThu Oct 27 1988 12:347
    If you paid US$20.00 for the Island sampler, you've been ripped-off.

    Here in Canada the double CD runs for CDN$14 to CDN$18.00
    (approx US$11 to US$15) and that is regular price...
	It is cheaper that a one CD regular price.

    At least at the major Discs/tape Shops, last time I noticed it.
1037.9are you sure?EUCLID::OWENSteve WILLBURY OwenFri Oct 28 1988 07:568
    re .8

    Gee, are you talking about the same Island sampler. 2 CDs. tons
    of music. I've never seen less than $18. (And I've seen it alot)

    Where can I get it for $11, I'd love to know.

1037.10Island sampler = promotion itemMQOFS::LEDOUXReserved for Future UseFri Oct 28 1988 13:3530
       Like I said in my reply, any major record shops in Canada
    (Sam the record man or A&A records (Only whareHouse type stores))
       (Downtown Toronto and Downtown Montreal)

    If you buy it in little shopping mall outlet, add 5 to 10$ per CD.
    Also small stores in large mall have a tendency to forget about
     "special low price" items like samplers. I have seen an
    EP CDs (2 cuts) sold at regular $15 in some stores and at the
    larger stores it went at a normal $5.99. Near Boston the only
    places where you can get a decent price are:

    1) Tower record (first one for choice, Good sales most of the time)
    2) Few stores in Harvard squares (not all)
    3) "Lechmere ONLY if they have a label/music style Sale
    4) Few major stores dowtown Boston (Strawberry...)
    5) Rockit in Nashua have SOME item at good price.

    There could be other places, but these are the ones I know.

    Remember, Samplers are promotion Items from record companies
    most of them are at prices ridiculously low since they SHOULD
    not pay any rights to the authors. (Promotion = cost )

    Some labels are still pricing their Samplers at regular prices
    (New Age like Windham Hill, NArada etc.. are ripping the public
    off)

    This is my opinion

    Vince.
