I recently bought the soundtrack cd from ``The Big Easy''. It's
a very nice sampler.
One of the groups featured is The Swan Silvertones. I have some old
LPs, but I hadn't heard any of their music on cd. For that matter, I
haven't seen much gospel music at all.
Aretha Franklin has a new disk which wasn't highly regarded in the NY
Times. The Times mentioned that Aretha's Amazing Grace album, dating
from ~1972, has been reissued on cd.
Have people seen or heard other gospel releases?

Another gospel question. I'm desperately searching for a CD of "The
Gospel at Colonus." Has anyone seen it (preferably in the Boston
area).

It ain't Boston, but ...
The album was (and I think still is) available here in Minneapolis when
Gospel was on at the Guthrie Theatre. A friend of mine bought the LP
and I believe she told me she had seen the CD. I have the album at
home if any additional information would be useful.

I found it at Record Town in the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, NH.
However, I also bought their only copy.
If you like gospel and were lucky enough to see the musical either
live or through the PBS Special, you already know how good the music is.
If you haven't -- but like gospel -- I heartily recommend this one.
I haven't had the opportunity to listen to the CD yet (I bought
it just an hour ago :-)), but expect it to be fantastic.

| 1033.4 | A qualified recommendation | FENNEL::BALS | The Trash Heap has spoken. Nyaaah! | Fri Apr 22 1988 08:58 | 22 |
Well, unfortunately, the CD of "The Gospel at Colonus" didn't quite
live up to my expectations, which were mostly formed by the Masterpiece
Theatre production. Mechanically, the recordings range from very
good to excellent -- what I've come to expect from DDD CDs. It does
have the annoying characteristic of shifting sound levels from track
to track, necessitating a constant adjustment to the volume.
The largest disappointment to me was the very poor editing work.
Much of the music has been drastically shortened, and most annoyingly,
many songs are faded out rather than ended (indeed, on one track,
you can hear the singers cut off just as they begin a new chorus).
In another case, the music ends abruptly, as if a switch had been
turned off, and there's a very noticeable gap before the next track
begins.
In two cases, different songs have been used in place of the ones
used in the televised version.
So, a more qualified recommendation for this CD than what I expressed
in .3.
