1031.0. "Portable Car Adapter Problems?" by USWRSL::MAYBR (Dynasties are made to be broken) Tue Dec 29 1987 17:28

A couple years ago I purchased a Sony portable and also recieved
the famous car adapter (plugs into the lineout of the CD and is
inserted into the cassette tape of a car). When I brought it home,
I tried it in my car and had no problem. I tried it in my portable
and again no problem. One day I was showing it to a friend in his
car and it didn't work. Since it had worked elsewhere, I figured
it was a problem with his equipment.

I just purchased a new car for my wife. A car ideal for long trips.
We also were waiting anxiously to use the portable CD on the long
trips. Of course, there seems to be a problem. At normal volume
levels there is no sound. It I turn the volume ALL the way up,
I can faintly hear the music. I am extremely untechnical, but I
assume some connection is not being made properly (pretty smart
thinking, huh?) Has anyone else tried a car converter on several
vehicles and had similar results? Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Bruce

I have not had your specific problem, but I have a suggestion.
I have the Sony D-7 and use the Recoton version of the adapter (which
should be virtually identical). The instructions with the Recoton
adapter very specifically say to plug it into the *headphone* jack,
not the Line Out. I find this very useful, since I can adjust the
output of the player to match the signal level and dynamic range
of the cassette player in any car I'm in. Maybe this will work
    for you, too. Here's hopin'...

Some car cassette players just don't like the adaptor or don't play
it. I have a Concord and it doesn't work at all. My wife's Blaupunkt
in her Rabbit plays it just fine.

I think QUARK::LIONEL made an entry some time back which says that
the adaptor doesn't work Pioneer units either. I guess its just a
hit-or-miss proposition.

OH yeah... It also makes a difference on autoreversing players
which side of the tape you have the player set for. Not a really
big difference, but try changing this too if you have the autoreversing
    kind.
