1028.0. "< Stay away from JVC >" by FOR8::SYSTEM () Sat Dec 26 1987 20:31

< Stay away from JVC >

The JVC players have a design problem and they have to be
taken back to dealer for realignment of some sorts. The
first symptom is it resets itself to track zero and an
advanced stage of the same problem leads to random skipping.
Mine was in shop three times. I got the refund. My CD model
was JVC XLV330..

1028.1The 450 too???ITSBIG::GAUTHIERMon Dec 28 1987 07:217

Is there a problem with all the JVC's or just the XLV330? I
have the 450 and, so far, I am very happy with it.

No problem with my multi-disk JVC.
1028.3No JVC problems yet, BUT...COOKIE::WILLIAMSMon Apr 18 1988 15:3617
I've got a 700 and have absolutely NO problems! It is a very noisy
disk changer but is (to the best of my knowledge and experience)
the best multi-disk cd player made.

NOTE: Beware of the 950 receiver though. It is a fantastic
audio/video receiver but it's remote (what a monster that is!) has
some design flaws. For instance, being their top of the
line receiver, you would figure they'd have the brains to design
the cd portion of it to accomodate their top of the line cd player.
But NOOOO! They didn't make it possible to change disks like on
the 700 but they made it to handle only a single disk player. But
hey they made up for that when they thought of putting the open/close
control on it!! HA! Ya, I'm going to sit in my recliner, pop the
disk drawer open and try to saucer my disks into it! HA! You would
think a $130 remote would be designed with some intelligence!!

1028.4Anybody want to buy a 700?RSTS32::DBMILLERCecil B D'Miller, the EsotericMon Apr 18 1988 15:5925
I have a 700 that I'm currently going to trade-in. I've only
had a month and it started rejecting disks and went into an
infinite loop over a quarter of a second of music. I took it
back and they said it was probably dust. They cleaned the lens,
and it's been working fine, but I found some other things I don't
like about it, so I'm taking advantage of the store's 30-day trade-in
policy and getting something I will like better (Read: Pioneer PDM-60)

What got me about the JVC was the *LOUSY* random mode. It has no
concept of what songs it has already played. It's played the same
track twice out of three chances several times, and has a tendancy
to favor disks.

The Pioneer PDM-60 will *NOT* repeat selections, and can randomly
play songs from the program list. The only disadvantage of the
Pioneer seemed to be that you can use either the 6-disc magazine
*or* a single-tray. The JVC had both available at the same time
for a total of 7 discs.

-Dave

(Of course, I'm still waiting for the store to get me the PDM-60.
They don't normally carry Pioneer, but are willing to make me a
satisfied customer. Unless someone wants to buy the 700 from me
so I can go elsewhere and get the PDM-60 8^))
1028.5Sony CDP-C7ESDQUARK::LIONELWe all live in a yellow subroutineTue Apr 19 1988 21:296
I would say that Sony probably has the best CD changer now - the
CDP-C7ESD (list $500). Part of the company's "ES" high-end line,
it has 4X oversampling with 16-bit DACs, "Custom File" programming
system (similar to Philips FTS), and digital outputs.
