1023.0. "ANY AL STEWART FANS" by OTFSV1::DONELY () Tue Dec 22 1987 19:13

   I have a few AL Stewart CD's:

                (1) Past,Present and Future
                (2) Year of the CAT

and a few Vinyl copies of:

                (1) Modern Times
                (2) Time Passages
                (3) 24 P Carrots

All are excellent albums and the recording is good weither it is CD or Vinyl.
Has anyone heard anything recent from Al Stewart and if so are the results
good and available on CD...Thanks...waiting for a reply..

Haven't heard anything new, but I recently got the CD of
Past Present & Future, and am really amazed at how good it is
I had only heard the album, and it was in pretty bad shape,
and the 12 string guitar, and orchestral backin on tunes like
Road to Moscow is astounding. I like this much more the the
    newer stuff.

re.1 I second the quality of PP&F one of my favorites on vinal and
even better on CD. I would have liked a longer verson of on the
border though. Road to moscow and merlins time are very clear and
to me sound better than my vinal copies ever did.

The most recent CD I've purchased was "Russians and Americans".
It was recorded in ~1984; Arista wouldn't release it in the USA.
They thought it was too political/non-commercial.

I saw Al in concert at the Paradise at about that time - he played
songs from the album, and made nasty comments about Arista between
songs. He was selling LPs in the lobby (I guess he had them pressed
independently after Arista rejected the album). The CD is an import
from a French subsidiary of RCA - I found it at BCD.

I love the album - it has some synth/drum-machine based songs, as
well as some folk-oriented material that reminds me of his early
    stuff.

Is there a 'Best of Al Stewart' available? If not, what would be
considered as his definitive album (ie, what's his 'Sgt Pepper'?).

Yes, there is a CD "Best of Al Stewart"; I'm not sure if that's
the name or not. As close as I can recall, the album seemed heavy
on his later stuff (Year of the Cat, Time Passages, etc.) but did
contain, I believe, Roads to Moscow and maybe Nostradamus.

Personally, I like Past, Present, and Future as well as Year of
    the Cat.

The CD is indeed called BEST OF AL STEWART, and both "Road to Moscow" and
"Nostradamus" are on it (live versions, in fact). I think PAST, PRESENT, AND
FUTURE and YEAR OF THE CAT are the definitive Al Stewart albums.
