1021.0. "Big band redux - are you "In The Mood" ??" by WCSM::ECTOR (The 8th day God created Beatles) Mon Dec 21 1987 13:58

This being Monday, I've gone brain dead. I really had a good opening
note ready in my feeble mind for this disc I purchased over the
weekend. It was one of those spur of the moment purchases - caused
by TOWER records personnel playing it. I REALLY only went there
for one "record," no intention of buying any discs. However....while
in the store, looking for this "one" record, I heard one of the
best singing versions of "In The Mood." Yeah, that old big band
hit from '43 or so. Anyhow, I heard a couple of instrumentals following
it, then another vocal. So I says to myself - "what, pray tell,
    is that from??"

Turns out that there's a movie out, called - yeah, you guessed it
    - In The Mood, and I was listening to the soundtrack. Of all people,
Jennifer Holliday sang the title track, and Beverly D'Angelo (that
very able character actress) sings a very nice version of "Dream"
(another 40's tune, done again in the early 60's by Etta James).
The flick is a true story of some young guy who goes around seducing
"older" women. All that aside - there's great instrumental "big
band" flavored tunes on the disc, among them a revised "Take The
    "A" Train."

If you liked "In The Digital Mood," you'll probably like this one
even better. J.J. Johnson, trombonist, was just one of the players
on this disc. The name of the band slips my mind, but the leader,
whom the band is named after, used to play with Woody Herman's
original Herd. It's an AAD disc, but so clean you wouldn't know
it. Great stocking stuffer for that mature music lover in the family
    - which may be yourself.
