| The soney CDP-50 is a nice player with many features you would have
to pay alot for in other brands. I've had mine for about 2 years
and it still sounds great/works fine. Paid $179 for the unit and
remote.

1011.2 | Technics SL-P210 | TOOK::MICHAUD | Jeff Michaud | Mon Dec 14 1987 21:05 | 11 |
| I like my Technics SL-P210 which I got in Lechmere in Nashua
for $180 last Feb.
It has a full function remote: 0-9, MEMORY, CLEAR, REPEAT, TIME-MODE,
PLAY/PAUSE, STOP, SKIP/SEARCH FORWARD/REVERSE, LEVEL UP/DOWN (reduces
output of player from 0-12 db; allows lowering volume from remote).
Programability is 20 tracks, and there is a headphone jack.
I haven't seen it at $180 since I bought it, but have seen them
advertise it for $200 (in fact two weeks after I bought it).

1011.3 | Technics SLP-220 | SHIVER::RIVERSD | Home of fluorescent cows | Tue Dec 15 1987 05:49 | 7 |
| I bought the Technics SLP-220 which is one model up from the 210.
I'm not sure what the difference is however. Mine does have volume
control for the headphones on the player. Anyways, I paid $199
at Service Merchandise about 2 months ago and I love it. That
price was not on sale.

| Check out the Magnavox 465 or 560. You can probably find one or
the other at Sears or Jordan Marsh for around 200.00 or so. I've
had a Mag. 1050 for about 2 years now. Still works and sounds great.

1011.5 | Tech SLP-420 | DSSDEV::MOR | | Tue Dec 15 1987 06:54 | 16 |
| I bought the SLP-420 about a month ago. So far, I've been really
happy with it. I bought it for $250 at Lechmere's. I guess I lucked
out, because orginally I was going to buy the SLP-320, but the salesman
had only one of them left and offered to sell me the 420 for the
same price of $250! Before I bought it, I looked around in other
stores and saw it for over $350. These same stores had the SLP-320
for around the same price as Lechmere's (~$250), so I figured I was getting
a really good deal. I couldn't resist. The player has every feature
I'd ever dream of using, including remote control. Besides sounding
great, it has a really cool looking display, and is very easy to
use. Another thing that I really liked about it was it's relatively
smaller size. If you are lucky, maybe you can get the same deal
at Lechmere's. Oh yeh, it also comes with a 2 year warranty. From
what I've seen, most players come with only 1.

1011.6 | Consider the ADC 16/2R | TELCOM::ROSENBERG | Dick Rosenberg VRO5-2/C7 | Tue Dec 15 1987 07:05 | 11 |
| According to Stereo Review (and part of your decision depends on
what you think of Stereo Review), the ADC 16/2R (partially engineered
by ADC's parent company, dbx), is a no-frills (but HAS remote),
CD player, that, to them, sounds neither better or worse than others
they have tested. It can be gotten mail order for $169 and, if this
is a recommendation, Nantucket Sound carries it (for $235).
Disclaimer: I've never heard it (but if I were in the market I would
make it a point to).

1011.7 | I got a Sony... | STAGE::ASHE | | Tue Dec 15 1987 13:15 | 8 |
| I bought the Sony CDP-350 (I think) last night at Lechmere for $220.
I guess it was part the name and part the salesman's recommendation.
Or maybe it was the 3 free CD offer too, although I heard the list
to choose from isn't great. Then again, the player's for my Dad,
so he can make that decision. If I got the model wrong, I'll fix
it when I get home...

Comments on repair rates? (or are CD's too new to break...)

Denon DCD-500. I've had it a year, I like it, it's simple
it cost about $240.
I did buy a CD player for my mom-in-law, a non-audiophile
with taste in classical musci. She wanted simplicity. It was the
bottom end Sharp (I don't know the model), cost about $140,
she loves it.

1011.10 | Nakamichi | SHARE::BENTLEY | | Thu Dec 17 1987 10:13 | 4 |
| Nakamichi has a new OMS-1A ($349) listed in the Jan 88 issue of
High Fidelity. This has dual D/A and separate power supplies for
digital and analog sections. I haven't seen any literature on it
yet, but its probably a minimum feature machine.

1011.11 | Any name brand | DARTS::LEVITT | | Thu Dec 17 1987 10:41 | 20 |
| All the name brand low end systems are the same, and they sound
95% as good as the very expensive ones. As with most luxury goods,
you pay a great deal for a little improvement to get the best.
Last Washington's Birthday, I bought a new discontinued Technecs
(sic) for about $100. It has all the simple features, and works
great.
I had a low cost system, and as soon as I got the CD, I noticed
how bad my Receiver and Speakers were. I had to buy $400 worth
of speakers, and $400 worth of receiver, to keep up with my
$100 CD player.
I just came up with a CD purchase price algorithum I'd like the
audiophiles to comment on:
"Price of CD player shoud be less than price of one speaker"

1011.13 | Thanks! | CACHE::LEIGH | | Mon Dec 21 1987 06:44 | 12 |
| I ended up getting the Sony CDP-350, which is the 550 without the remote.
Lechmere has them on sale this week for $199. Lechmere has a policy that
for 30 days after the sale, if you can find a better price at another store,
they will rebate the difference. I got it on Saturday for $229 and will be
going in on the 26th with the Lechmere ad to get my rebate. It's good I
didn't wait longer, because the stores seem to be running short on CD's.
I'll find out on Christmas day how it sounds...
Thanks for all the suggestions!!
