1000.1 | Observing Repeats in Beethoven Symphonies | DELNI::TRUSLOW | | Mon Dec 07 1987 10:15 | 15 |
| I can start you off with one: Carlos Kleiber conducting the fifth
on Deutsche Grammaphon SEEMS to take all the repeats (at least in
the first movement--I just about jumped out of my skin when I heard
a few of them, having gotten to know the symphony from the Toscanini
performance). It's a very exciting performance as well. The two
middle movements sounded to me very much as I remembered them from
the Toscanini--so they may not observe every repeat; or, it's possible
that Toscanini took the repeats in them (or that there were repeats
that I simply failed to notice because they didn't come after bridge
passages containing music I'd never heard before). Good luck to
you with THIS project! If you do manage to assemble a complete set,
please publish the list here.

| I second the recommendation of Carlos Kleiber's recording of
Beethoven's fifth -- he *does* take all the repeats. If such
things matter, the recording is not digital.

1000.3 | short fifth (isn't this a pint)? | DECWET::COOMBS | | Wed Dec 09 1987 10:10 | 8 |

Isn't it also a very short CD -- having only the fifth on it with
plenty of room for a non-existent second piece?
Not that this matters to the purist looking for the true great
performance...

1000.4 | Beethoven's 5th: A Very Short DG CD | DELNI::TRUSLOW | | Wed Dec 09 1987 10:27 | 19 |
| I know that Carlos Kleiber has also recorded the seventh for DG,
but I'm not sure that he's recorded any of the overtures, incidental
music, etc.--the kinds of things that could be used as filler on
short CDs. And I doubt that there would be room on one CD for both
of the symphonies.
This is not an attempt, by the way, to excuse DG. I'll never forget
their release (early '80s?) of a fully-priced Lp that had Emil Gilels
playing one of the sonatas (I think it was No. 7). Side 1 had the
first movement (about 12 minutes), and side 2 had the rest of the
sonata--maybe another 13 or 14 minutes. And that was it. For about
$9.00, which was a lot of money for an Lp back in 1981 or '82. The
policy that generated things like that (and there WERE many others
like it!) doesn't seem to have changed a bit since the advent of
CDs.
Cheers,
JT

| This is just me, my favorite Beethovens are by:
Sir Georg Solti (usually on London- I think that I've seen them)
Leonard Bernstein (The recordings on DG with the Vienna Philharmonic)
But, the all time classics are
Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, available (I think) on RCA

My dad has asked that I get this set. I went to Tower and found
2 disks. (I think 1 and 3, 2 and 7). I want to try to get the
set for Christmas. Is it available as a set? Where and how much?

| Also, if anyone has a Green CD guide or something like it, could
you let me know what the serial number is for this series, or for
the individual disks? It would help me a LOT!
Thanks,

| RE: -.1 (Walt)
The July 1988 Schwann's does not list the Toscanini recordings as
a set. Here are the individual CDs listed (these are all mono):
Symphonies 1 & 3 RCA RCD1-7197
Symphonies 2 & 7 RCA RCD1-7198
Symphonies 7 & 8 Hunt Productions CD-34007 [AAD]
Since this is an old catalog, it could be the entire set of Toscanini
recordings has been issued by now (in time for Christmas, of course).
I'd call Tower and ask.

1000.10 | Karl Boehm and Vienna Philharmonic | LARVAE::STEPHENS | Jim Stephens aka James | Fri Dec 09 1988 01:40 | 8 |
| I have been given a boxed set of two symphonied VI and IX with Karl
Boehm conducting. The IX was the only digital recording he ever
made. He was asked to select the four soloists for the Choral part
of the IX. I think it is really great. Others may disagree. It is
released bu Deutsche Gramaphon. If you want the uk catalog number
I will check it out when I get home.

The winter '88 Schwann list only the individual Toscanini releases
listed above.
Has anyone heard the (relatively) new Concertbegouw set on Philips?

If you're talking about the set in the black box conducted by Kurt
Masur, that's the set I have.
