999.0. "Phil Spector -- Christmas cd" by CUPOLA::HAKKARAINEN (One person's now is another's then.) Thu Dec 03 1987 10:50

Just listening to Phil Spector's ``A Christmas Gift for You'' from
WBCN in Boston. I haven't seen the disk in stores yet, but it was
reportedly released a few days ago.

Found the disk over the weekend at Newbury Comics in F'ingham. Nice
collection, even with the sappy greetings from Spector on the last
    track.

The liner notes, however, are pretty skimpy. Does anyone recall
    when this was originally released?

Just a guess, the original release was probably 1964 or 65??? Label
    was Philles.

It was reissued with a cover of Phil in a Santa suit on Apple around
1972. This cover version also came out on the Warner Bros. distributed
Spector records around 1978 or so.

The new issue (it's on Rhino, isn't it?) restores the original cover.

I bought this disc tonight at Straberries in the Nashua Mall. I was surprised
that it is mono since it dates from the mid 60s. Is the album mono as well? I
really enjoyed listening to it as I had only heard about half of the songs in
the past.

    Re: .3

Phil Spector reportedly thought stereo was awful and in fact can
be seen in his Santa suit on the cover of the Apple version of the
Christmas album sporting a button which says "Back to Mono".

I know that the WB version of the Christmas album as well as the
WB double set "Phil Spector's Greatest Hits" are both in true mono
    and are so marked.

Of course, he had a point, it really wasn't unitl the early seventies
that pop recordings started having decent stereo mixes. And
reprocessed stereo has always made me gag....

Excuse my ignorance, but what kind of music does Phil Spector play?
999.6CSSE32::RHINEJack Rhine - DTN: 381-2439Wed Dec 09 1987 15:416
Phil Spector doesn't play any music. He produced groups such as the Chrystals,
the Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, and singers such as Darlene Love
(all of these are featured on the XMAS CD, there are many others) from the late
50s to the mid 60s. I don't know what he does now, but would suspect that he
doesn't have to do anything!

Could someone provide a track listing of songs on this CD? I was
wondering what was on it. It sounds good!

    Thanx,

    re. 5 & 6.

Wellll...actually Spector did start out as a singer with the group
the Teddy Bears, whose big hit was "To Know Him Is To Love Him."

He also produced the Righteous Bros and created the famous "Wall
of Sound" evident in "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" and many
Righteous hits thereafter. If you listen closely, the mono mix on
his records does give a "feeling" of stereo, because of the "wall
    of sound."

His former wife, Ronnie, was recently featured on Eddie Money's
last lp - singing the line from her biggest hit "Be My Baby," from
her days with the Ronettes (aptly named group).
