WERS at 88.9 in Boston has a New Age show on the weekends, I always
forget the day and time. Call them at 617-578-8890. They also
have "The Fusebox", M-F from 2 to 5 PM which is a fusion show,
therefrore a little more jazz and rock than you might like, but
they stray into New Age territory with stuff like Shadowfax.
WCUW in Worcester at 91.3 has a show on Saturday mornings, around
6 to 9 I think that focuses on electronic music, i.e Tangerine Dream,
Kitaro, etc. They also have "Music of the Whole Earth" which showcases
international music and touches upon some stuff which is New-Age
like. Call them at 617-753-2284 for times.
WZBC out of Boston College at 90.3 also has some electronic type
things but watch out, they also broadcast some of the nastiest
underground stuff that loosely might be termed "progressive rock".
Not for the squeamish!

998.5 | New Age = New Wave??? | FGVAXZ::LAING | Pipe Dreamer * Jim Laing * 261-2194 | Fri Dec 04 1987 10:46 | 10 |
| Isn't there a difference between "New Age" and "New Wave"? Although
no term in music can be exactly defined, I've always thought these
two were distinctly different entities. For example, I'd hear people
say "I really like some of the New Age stuff, but I'm not really
into New Wave" ...
Maybe this comment belongs in another NOTES file, but it seemed
appropriate with the current topic ...

| > Isn't there a difference between "New Age" and "New Wave"?
Yes, new age music falls somewhere between Jazz, Clasical, Space
music and Pop. It is mostly instrumental and usually somewhat
minimalist in instrumentation. Some more popular artists
include George Winston (piano interpretations of classical and
traditional scores), Liz Story (piano -- kinda jazzy), GRP
(they describe themselves as new age jazz), Shadowfax...
Some of the more light weight pieces qualify as yuppie musak.
Those pieces are so light weight (unintrusive, boring) to merit
the nick name "Air Pudding".
New Wave music, on the other hand, could be called progressive
rock. It covers a range between euro/american techno-pop
(tomorow's pop hits from abroad), some inovative rock which AOR
stations don't seem to pick up cause it's really not straight
forward rnr, occational R&B, and mildly abrasive punk (for lack
of a better name), though not hard core punk. Examples include:
The Cure, The Smiths, The Housemartins, Kid Creole & the Cocoa
nuts, Kate Bush, The Stranglers, PIL...

| New Wavers and New Agers don't generally get invited to the same
parties.
The Pro side of New Age is an extention of somewhat composed jazz
with plenty of room for improvisation.
The Con side is that the music is only as good or interesting as
the artist. It can be "atmospheric" (sonic wallpaper) or fluffy
(ear candy) or interesting if you like jazz or the early Keith Jarrett
style and are willing to pay attention to the minimalist development.
The Pro side of New Wave is that it tries to take music into new
"rock" areas (see the RECORDS conference note 374 for the opinions
of those better versed than I.)
The Con side is that you can often get the same effect by banging
your head against a brick wall for 20 minutes.
Again, it all depends upon the talent of the artist.

| For you people discussing what new age music is [and what I was
listening to on the radio] all I can say is some I love, some I like,
and some I hate.. My buy list now is:
1. Mannhiem Steamroller - have them all I think so far.
2. Yanni - Private Music Label - Heavy Electronic Keyboard
3. David Lynch - Music West Label - Deep Breakfast [terrible title]
is an excellent light to moderate electronic keyboard cd.
4. A mixture of Windham hill cds [I consider this background stuff]
5. Tangerine Dream- one cd a soundtrack and about 10 lps.
Have always liked electronic music with good melody and have been
collecting MOOG stuff for over 15 years.

While Yanni is also on *my* "buy list", I must say that I think
his piano performance on "Nostalgia" on PIANO TWO (which is where
I first heard his work) to the electronic version on KEYS TO
IMAGINATION. His piano playing is *very* dynamic; his electronic
keyboard less so.

998.11 | A few choice choices: | MIST::IVERSON | a Brubeck beat in a Sousa world | Fri Jan 22 1988 08:57 | 41 |
| Here is my list of a starter collection of New Age music.
(I realize it overlooks some very significant works,
but you have to start somewhere;-)
Current personal favorites:
Patrick O'Hearn "Between Two Worlds"
(Voted best NA album of 1987 by "Star Streams")
Suzzane Ciani "Velocity of Love"
"Must have" classics of the genre:
Ray Lynch "Deep Breakfast"
Latitude
Osamu Kitajima "The source"
In the "very good" category:
Yanni "Out of Silence" (Rave reviews by everybody)
Shadowfax "Shadow Dance" (An especially good choice
for someone making the transition from Rock)
Kitaro, Virtually any disc but a few personal faves:
"Silk Road 1 & 2" (They switched the labels
on my set, so I always get "favorite
disc" confused.:-} )
"The Light of the Spirit"
"Tenku"
Excellent music for "Acoustically oriented nature
people" ;-) :
David Lanz & Paul Speer "Natural States"
Eric Tingstad/Nancy Rumbel/David Lanz "Woodlands"
Etc. Etc. Etc. :-)
I would like to hear some more reviews of "Piano
Two" from someone. Ciani and Yanni on acoustic
sounds intrigueing.
