992.0. "authors' credits on CDS" by REGENT::POWERS () Wed Dec 02 1987 06:48

I had posted a comment in the BEATLES notes file about an apparent lack
of song writing credits on George Harrison's new album (CD).
CDs generally come with more documentation than do cassettes, and many
have as much as regular LPs. The little book made to go in the
cover of the box seems to suffice for most purposes.
I only have a couple of dozen CDs, and many of those are classical,
so the question of whether song writing credits appear on the disk
is harder for me to research.

Basic question: Do CDs generally carry as much information on the disc
as LPs do on the record itself? Don't the licensing agencies (BMI and ASCAP)
and the song writers and performers have to be credited on the medium?
(In case you didn't know, radio stations have to keep logs of what they play,
and pay licensing fees to the agencies for the use of the music.
Not all stations all the time; statistical surveys are used.)

Without credits, how do they log?
How many CDs are missing this info, either on the disc or in the packaging?

I called up CHOM-FM (Montreal, Quebec) and asked them why George Harrison's
"Cloud Nine" CD didn't give credits. They told me they were not aware that
the CD didn't give any credits because they (all radio stations?) get
additional information with their copies. Does anyone have the LP version
of this album? Does it give song credits?

Tom, I'd be interested in browsing through a BEATLES notes file.
Could you let me know where it's located. Thanks, Mike.
By the way, what do you think about Harrison's latest?

    Re original subject...

I have a Chuck Berry Greatest Hits CD with absolutely zero credits
on the disk itself. No, not even the song titles. It does have the
title of the CD (ie, Chuck Berry's Greatest Hits) and the relevant
    copywrite info but thats it!

The CD cover does have the relevant on.

and label "The COLLECTION" but thats about all.

    re. -1 & -2

So far as Chuck's stuff is concerned, if the label doesn't give
credit to CHESS/CHECKER records, the stuff is probably one of 3
sound alike re-makes Berry did in the early 60's. Little Richard also
did this, and anything on any label but Specialty, are remakes.

If the copyright on Jan & Deans music gives credit to Liberty Records,
then you can be sure of the originality of the music.

Sadly enough, even the original lp's of these artists doesn't
give much in the way of liner notes - it didn't come into vogue
until the early 70's to do much for those that assisted in putting
    together an lp.
