986.0. "Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)" by BAVIKI::GOOD (Michael Good) Wed Nov 25 1987 11:26

Another of my favorite 70's bands is coming out on CD! Early ELO
records are now being released. Previously, "A New World Record" was
the earliest album available on CD, but last weekend I picked up copies
of "On the Third Day" and "Face the Music." These have been released
on CBS' "Best Value" series. This is a mid-priced series with higher
prices than the earlier Collector's series, but with much better
packaging, including full lyrics for both of these albums.

I haven't listened to "Face the Music" yet, but "On the Third Day"
sounded good - a slight improvement over the record. Joe Gastwirt is
credited with the remastering on this one, as he is on many of the
Chicago CD's. The high end is a little clearer on my CD than on my LP.

What I really want is "Eldorado" - it's my favorite ELO album, and my
LP copy is really worn out with skips and noises. Maybe it's out but
just wasn't in the bins at the Coop that day.

ELO's first 6 albums were:

No Answer (or just Electric Light Orchestra)
Electric Light Orchestra II
On the Third Day
Eldorado
Face the Music
A New World Record

I don't like their music starting with their 7th album, "Out of the
Blue" - but for those who do, many if not all of those albums were
already released on CD.

Well, try not to get *too* angry when you hear it. It seems CBS/Jet
decided to chop off the intros to 3 or 4 of the tracks---including
one of the reasons I bought the CD: the intro to "Fire On High."
[At first, I thought my CD player had skipped when I pushed PLAY.]

Aaaargh!

> What I really want is "Eldorado" - it's my favorite ELO album

In contrast, they did a fantastic job with this one. For one thing,
the whole album is there. For another, the sound is great---you can
even hear background studio noise.

I guess they couldn't cut anything out of the concept album.

986.2Eldorado is great, Face the Music is butcheredBAVIKI::GOODMichael GoodTue Dec 01 1987 11:3421
I read your note too late! I picked up "Eldorado" this weekend,
listened to it, thought it was fantastic, and then put on "Face The
Music." I jumped when it started on loud notes! I checked with my
album, and they've cut about 2 minutes of music off the album - the
first 1 minutes of "Fire On High", and the introductions to all but 3
of the other tracks.

I called the CBS quality department's 800 number to report this as a
quality problem (excuse me, 7% of the music is missing) and will try to
return it to the store for merchandise credit as a defective disc.

"On the Third Day" is in fine shape. "A New World Record" still
comes in cheapo packaging with no lyrics and very little of the cover
or sleeve art - but the whole album is indeed there.

"Eldorado" is a great album, one of the best uses of an orchestra in
rock music. It was the first time ELO recorded with an orchestra and
chorus, and I don't think they ever matched it in quality - they
certainly never tried anything so ambitious again. Late ELO sounds
nothing like it. If you like other classical-influenced rock groups
and haven't heard "Eldorado", I think you should check it out.

Where did you get "Eldorado"? I can't seem to find a copy of this and
have checked quite a few stores.

Thanks,

986.4Harvard CoopBAVIKI::GOODMichael GoodWed Dec 02 1987 15:033
I've gotten all my ELO discs at the Harvard Coop. They were also nice
and let me exchange "Face the Music" for a different disc, even though
that violated their store policy for exchanges of opened discs.

I know that MikeZ picked up Eldorado at Rockit Records, as did I,
this week. Nice. My only quibble is that the index marks are just
second late on most tracks. At least on my AIWA.

However, unlike the author of .0, I *love* "Out of the Blue" and was
VERY pleased that they appear to have squeezed it all onto one
CD without cuts.

Having said that, $18.99 for 1 CD was very expensive - especially
as it's no import. So "Bleah!" to Jet.

Still worth buying, hell, its about $3 cheaper than a single CD
at home anyhow.
986.6Anybody got the Time 8^)RSTS32::DBMILLERCecil B D'Miller, the EsotericMon Mar 21 1988 16:468
Does anyone know if "Time" by ELO is out on CD?

Granted, it wasn't one of the more popular ELO albums,
but it was one of my favorites, and my non-CD copy is
getting in pretty bad shape.

Thanks,
-Dave
