981.0. "Sony DAT Duplicators Are Now Available" by AQUA::ROST (You've been living on solid air) Fri Nov 20 1987 12:29

From the Japanese newpaper Dempa Shimbun:

On August 27, Sony announced a high-speed digital audio tape recorder
(DAT) duplication system for the mass production of prerecorded
tapes and special barium ferrite tape for use with the system.

It began accepting orders for these high-speed products and a
previously announced regular speed system for small lot production
    in late September.

The system emphasizes speed, productivity and reliability. The
tape speed is approximately 327 times (!!!) the regular one, so
the system copies an 80-minute tape in 15 seconds (!!!). The system
is highly productive because it can do the work of 150 regular copying
    machines.

A complete system costs approximately $616,400.

    (Gee, I want one....!)

Me too! Maybe we could get a group purchase together and get a
	discount?

Note that this is a "contact duplication" system, where the master
tape is pressed against the blank tape (a different formula than
standard DAT tape, the DAT standard was designed with this in mind),
heated slightly, and the magnetic "image" transfers. Neat.

    Re: .0

You mentioned it copies 80 minute tapes in 15 seconds.

What lengths (time-wise) do they sell blank DAT tape in?
