964.0. "Mannheim Steamroller+Mason Williams=Classical Gas" by QUARK::LIONEL (We all live in a yellow subroutine) Fri Nov 13 1987 21:12

    I opened my latest copy of Digital Audio, and what do my eyes reveal,
    but an advertisment from American Gramaphone for a new disc -
    a collaboration between Mannheim Steamroller and - are you ready
    - Mason Williams! The album/disc/tape is called "Classical Gas",
    which of course was the title of Williams' immensely popular
    instrumental tune in the late 60's (or maybe early 70's - not sure).

    The disc is AGCD-800. Has anyone seen this in the stores yet?
    It sounds like a "must have!" for us Mannheim Steamroller fans!

964.1Been lusting after it for 2 weeks now...CSC32::J_PARSONSFri Nov 13 1987 21:167
    I bought it today after having seen it about 2 weeks ago in a stereo
    store here in Colorado Springs (none of the local record stores
    have it and most refute its' existence).

    I haven't listened to it enough yet to give a full review, but so
    far from what I can tell the Steamroller is more of a backup to
    the solo guitar work. Recording quality is, of course, excellent.

    I bought mine last week at musicland in the citadel for $13.99.
    This is bound to be one of my favorites for a long time!
    The sound quality is par with all the other manheim recordings
    and mason willams does and outstanding job.
    I do have one question for others that own this disk at :51 to
    about 1:05 on classical gas I hear a ringing/feedback and wondered
    if others have heard the same or is my ears/system?
    One othe comment is the original disk I purchased appeared to have
    tar or something of that consistancy all over the jewel box and
    disk. I took it back and musicland replaced with no questions asked
    the replacement was clean. Anyone ever run into this before? Have
    any idea what it might have been? I'm sure it would have gummed
    the works if I hadent caught it and put it in for a spin.

    Someone spilled some tar on the CD from the "tar and feathers"
    that was used on Mason Williams for not recording for so
    many years! <*|_>

    I'll agree with that I hope he will be doing more recording soon
    I really like his style.

    I FINALLY found a copy of this disc. It is wonderful! The sound
    is clear, the music enchanting and the dynamics awe-inspiring.

    Lechmere in Nashua. I had been checking there every few days for the
    past month. I only saw one (but didn't look hard to see if there were
    more). My only suggestion is to do what I did - keep checking. Or
    order it specifically from a local store (such as Rockit Records).
    (Or if you get desparate, call up AG and order it from them - I was
    about to do this!)

    Make sure that you look in the bins for Mason Williams and Mannheim
    Steamroller. I have seen this CD in one or the other but not yet
    both. I have also seen it under the sections of Jazz and New Age.

    It's funny to hear that you all are having difficulty finding this
    CD. I have had mine for about three months now. But now that it
    has become quite popular then supplies would be low I guess.

    a dozen of them.

Every music store I've been in here in MPO (Minneapolis) has tons of this
CD. In fact, I'd be happy to work a deal with someone that has access to a
store with the Rennaissance "Azure D'or" CD. Actually, I'm interested in all
the Rennaissance CD's after Anne Haslam joined them.

I've also had this disk for the past 2 or 3 months. It is excellent.

I found this last week CD at the Lakewood, California Music + while on vacation
in the land where you have to look at the air you breathe. Actually, I was a
little bit disappointed. I like both Mason Williams and the Steamroller, but
didn't find much there that was new and exciting. For example, Greensleeves was
about the same as Deck the Halls from the XMAS CD, but with a different melody.
There were some pretty songs, but I would characterize the music as "New Age
Montovani". The bottom line is that while I like most of the songs, the CD will
probably be used for background listening rather than active listening.
964.13QUARK::LIONELWe all live in a yellow subroutineTue Feb 23 1988 09:065
    I believe that all of the disc is old music that Williams composed
    over the years. I didn't find it "exciting" (except for the title
    track), but it was very enjoyable to listen to.

964.14I WON'T pay $17! Can it be found cheaper?FROST::EDSONDWed Feb 24 1988 10:416
    There's quite a few of these CDs here in Burlington (Vt), but for
    $17.00! What's everyone else paying for this CD? I'm waiting for
    the <$14.00 variation. Is this an import CD? If not, why the high
    price?

    Don
964.15QUARK::LIONELWe all live in a yellow subroutineWed Feb 24 1988 10:486
    I paid $16.99. These are not imports, but AG has always priced their
    discs high. I could sort-of understand it with their high-quality
    analog LPs, but not really for CDs. I would imagine, though, that
    they know people will pay it....

    I paid 11.99 for mine, at a store that charges 11.99 for every CD.
     Not the world's greatest selection, but they have the more popular
    ones.

I found it up here in MPO for $12.99 at Best Buy a while back. But, everywhere
else I've seen it, its been $16.99. Even at stores where everything else is
$13.99. I also found their Christmas CD for $12.99.
