960.0. "All Star Christmas" by PARITY::GOSSELIN () Thu Nov 12 1987 10:17

     Ahhhhh.....nice to have this file up and running again!

     I'm interested in the new Christmas album (o.k., so I'm a tad early)
    called "An All-Star Christmas." The Boss, U2, John Cougar Mellencamp
    and assorted others are on this thing.

     Anybody own it? Heard it? Care to post a review?

                               Thanks

    I heard the album (that dirty word) and was not impressed; it seemed
    to me, on an initial hearing to be very dance-flavored, disco oriented.
    But then again, most of the participating artists are not my favorites.
960.2It's okay, not greatBOEHM::ZEERoger ZeeThu Nov 12 1987 16:0616
I bought it last week. Like -.1, I was not totally impressed, but it's
not all bad. The album is called "A Very Special Christmas" with the
proceeds going to Special Olympics. It's got 15 songs with a total of
51+ minutes.  I'm a big U2 fan, but the U2 track wasn't recorded too
well (done during a soundcheck at a concert in Glasgow over the summer),
and you don't hear much from the Edge. My favorite track is the
Pretenders (really Chrissie Hynde) doing "Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas". One ear-shocking sound was Stevie Nicks doing "Silent
Night". Now I like Stevie, but her voice doesn't suit this classic.
Luckily, she gets some help in the second half of the song.

If I was a critic, I probably wouldn't get it, but since all of these
artists donated some time for a worthy cause, you're automatically
hooked, and they're just reeling you in for the purchase.

    Hmmm....you folks confirmed my suspicions about this album. Thanks
    for the info!

960.4Want to buy a used CD?TOOK::MICHAUDJeff MichaudFri Nov 27 1987 22:464
    I bought it wednesday. Listened to it twice, and am now going to
    put it up for sale in CDSWAP. Even the boss's track wasn't that
    great and I love his previous X-mas song (Santa Claus is Comming
    to Town).

    So it's after Christmas, and the last thing you want is another
    Christmas disc...

    Well, let me recommend Peter Kater's Christmas disc...this somewhat
    new-age-ish quazi-jazz-ish Boulder, Colorado pianist has put together
    a set of traditional X-mas tunes done in a not so traditional way.
    NEW AND IMPROVED it would say on the box if this was soap, but really,
    it's nice if you enjoy mild-mannered jazz piano.

    And, since it is after Christmas, consider this anyway, because
    the style is just enough to disguise any heavy Christmas flavoring.

    Kater's Christmas CD, nice anytime.
