935.0. "Is the PD-M70 worth it?" by EPOCH::JOHNSON (Whoever dies with the most toys, wins.) Thu Oct 22 1987 09:56

I am thinking of buying a Pioneer PD-M70. It has a 6-pac magazine
and 8 program areas. Total selections is 80 with a max-per-program
    of 32.

Given that I've been told that there are roughly 10 tracks on a
CD for a magazine total of 60, is it reasonable to think that the
programmability will be useful if I spread my max of 80 over 8 programs
for an average of 10 out of 60 tracks?

Do you people think that this is a bell and whistle that I won't
use and should therefore look at the PD-M60?

935.1What's the Difference Between the 60 and 70?DELNI::TRUSLOWFri Oct 23 1987 10:288
    I have a PD-M60 that I like a lot, but I've never programmed it
when I've used the "6-pack" in it. It would certainly be bells and
whistles for me! Can you tell me what the difference is between
the PD-M60 and the PD-M70? Is the PD-M70 front- or top-loaded, for
    example?

935.2My understandingEPOCH::JOHNSONWhoever dies with the most toys, wins.Fri Oct 23 1987 14:4515
My uderstanding is that the difference is that the PD-M70 has eight
buttons on the front (at least) that the PD-M60 doesn't: program
A through program H. Max total tracks is 80 with max total tracks/disc
of 32. The way I read it, I may have a mag I label "classical -
program A". I have stored a program under "A" to play the selections
of the disks that I keep in that mag that I want to hear. I may
also have an "oldies - program B" so that when I put that mag in
and press "B" I play the disc/tracks that are appropriate to that
    mag.

What I'd really like to see is some kind of program strip in the
surface of the mag so that when I put a mag in I can say "read the
    program and do it".

I've talked about it somewhere else..... I've had a PDM 6 since
march of '86. That experience has lead my preference toward either
the Sony 10 pack player for more variety in a single loading, or
the PDM 40 for super low price. I think I've only programmed the
PDM 6 once, just to see how it worked, and I rarely if ever use
the remote, its never near enough to the chair I'm in, and I'm not
too old to walk across the room once in a while.

Reg (I still think Pioneer should do a 2x6.)

I'm now happy with not one but two retailers!

LaMere quoted me 399 but couldn't get it for a week. Lechmere had
it in stock for 459, so I verified their price protection policy
and bought it Friday. Today I dropped by LaMere and asked them
to quote me the 399 in writing, which they did, which I took back
to Lechmere and traded for $63 which I promptly spent on 4 Beatles
    CDs and a spare 6-pack.

    Isn't America great?!
