933.0. "Rock'n'mania:pleased/sleazed" by FSHQOA::SBEAUPRE (out the next) Wed Oct 21 1987 10:16

    I notice that people mention that they purchase albums etc. at
    rock 'n' mania, could someone please try to erase some lingering
    percecptions I have about that store. A couple years back I was
    in the store in framingham and noticed that they were selling rock
    zines at inflated prices,they actually covered up the original
    price and sold them at their "new" price. If this isnt illegal
    than its certainly sleazy. I asked the guy at the register, who
    by the way looked like a used-car salesman, what the deal was.
    He refused to offer any explanation basically saying "if you
    dont like it..screw". I also noticed that they were selling these
    really cheesey laminated album cover plaque monstrosities at
    rediculous prices. At this point I started to doubt the validity
    of the toted "collectors items" that they were also selling. It
    was my lasting impression that they were there to take advantage
    of the less than informed portion of the record buying public.
    I normally shop at Newbury comics and would welcome the addition
    of an alternative source in my search for obscure material.Has
    this place changed?

933.1They're not getting any of my $$$CASEE::CLARKWard ClarkThu Oct 22 1987 08:2615
    A couple of years ago, I visited Rock'n'Mania on two occasions (about a
    month apart). Both times I left the shop empty handed.

    The first time I asked if I could return a used CD if it were defective
    and the sales clerk muttered something to the effect that "You bought
    it - you own it. Don't bother bringing it back."

    I don't recall what happened the second time. Both times I had the
    impression that they were in the business of making money (period), not
    serving their customers.

    I realize that this was a long time ago, but I know that *I* am never
    going back there.

933.3Do You Know His Name?DELNI::TRUSLOWFri Oct 23 1987 10:224
    Is this man named "Jeep" by any chance? He sounds a lot like the
    guy who took over the management of Discount Records in Harvard
    Square back in 1970-71.

    Surprising... I was in Rock 'n Mania a few months ago and I was
    really impressed with their CD selection; lots of Genesis/PG,
    Bob Dylan, Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, and some great imports.
    Mostl were 13.99 (Strawbs is 15.99). We picked up an
    import of T. Rex's Slider that had 7 extra tracks on it (about 50
    minutes of music). It was only 14.99. When we played it it
    mistracked badly towards the end. My wife brought it back the next
    day and they replaced it with no hassle at all!

    Maybe the owner is sleazy, but their prices and selection (CD wise)
    are wuite good. I'll go back.

I agree with the previous perceptions stated. I also don't like having to
ask someone to look at a given CD for purchase. In my opinion, their sales
approach is stupid because it causes me to purchase less, I don't like the
aggravation/feeling of distrust. I prefer places where I can browse and
view at my convenience picking up those I'm interested in as I'm going.

    	Re .0

    	Reminds me of the last time I bought some sheet music. On the
    back of the sheet music on the bottom it said DO NOT PAY MORE THAN
    $1.50 FOR THIS SHEET MUSIC, yet the sheet music was priced at $2.00.
    I pointed it out to clerk and he said "If you want it, you'll have
    to pay the two bucks". I wrote to the publisher.
    	Acton music didn't used to mark the prices on their accessories.
    I guess they charge whatever they feel like. One day a young clerk
    asked *me* what the price was - I guessed about ten dollars too
    low!  Too bad!
