930.1 | Jarvi and Sibelius - don't miss it! | FIZBIN::BINDER | A few frilly words... | Wed Oct 21 1987 12:38 | 12 |
| Jarvi is doing a complete cycle of Sibelius' orchestral works. Some are
obviously going to be better than others. I have only one so far - the
second symphony. This recording is unlike any other I've ever heard of the
work. I was so used to the gentle, pastoral approach of conductors like
Ormandy and Rattle that I was rather put off on first hearing the Jarvi.
*Big* mistake on my part. Having heard it several times, I can now
recommend it wholeheartedly. Jarvi pulls meaning and feeling out of the
music that I wasn't aware Sibelius was even capable of. It is, in my
opinion, unqualifiedly the best recording of a Scandinavian work that I
have ever heard!

930.2 | Jarvi/Tubin's 2nd & 6th | LEDS::STRZEPA | | Wed Oct 21 1987 15:28 | 11 |

I just got a recording (BIS) of Jarvi with Eduard Tubin's 2nd and
6th Symphonies. I had never heard of Tubin before, and decided
to chance it. He is sort of a contemporary of Prokofiev, though
his music leans toward the Sibelius/Carl Nielsen school. The
performances are hard to assess, since this is new music to me,
but it took a few listenings to get used to the stuff. Tubin
is not very tonal - and portions (especially in the 6th) were
harsh and very dissonant. However, the 2nd was very approachable
on a first listening, and smacks of what Shostakovitch would sound
like with a caffiene high...

930.3 | Where can I find Jarvi on BIS | MUSTNG::MGINGRAS | Roll Over, Chuck Berry! | Wed Oct 21 1987 16:02 | 18 |
| Re: .2
Your description of Tubin on BIS sounds very appealing to me.
I'm a lover of both Sibelius and Shostakovich and a little dissonance
doesn't put me off.
The problem I have is, I can't find BIS CD's anywhere within reasonable
distance of my living area (southern N.H.) Does anyone know where
to get this label without driving to Boston? I've seen some Jarvi
on both Chandos & BIS out at Tanglewood, but I can usually only afford
to pick up a couple after spending my budget on gas, lawn tickets,
food, lodging, etc.
Jarvi recordings don't seem to be produced domestically, but I think
the ones I have of him conducting Shostakovich & Prokofiev symphonies
are among my best discs.

930.4 | Another source of BIS discs | FIZBIN::BINDER | A few frilly words... | Wed Oct 21 1987 17:41 | 10 |
| Re: .3
You don't have to go to Boston to find BIS recordings, but it may be just
as bad to go to Sudbury. I'm very fond of the Electric Gramophone there,
in Mill Village on Route 20. That's where I found the Jarvi Sibelius 2nd.
And if they don't have what you want they'll try to get it. They will also
let you play any retail-priced CD *before* you buy it. The people are
knowledgeable and helpful without being pushy.

930.5 | Try Berkshire Record Outlet near Tanglewood | MAGES::BURR | | Thu Oct 22 1987 13:44 | 10 |
| re .-2
When you are at Tanglewood, you should try the Berkshire Record Outlet (see
add in Tanglewood program for exact address) on Route 7 in Lenox, if you
haven't already. There prices are good ($11.99 or $12.99) for Chandos as
I recall. They claimed to have most of the BIS line last time I was there
and also had a moderate selection of Chandos, although only the Prokiev 5th
with Jarvi.
