923.0. "Monkees' first two on CD" by TLE::WARD (John Ward) Tue Oct 13 1987 13:54

The first two (`The Monkees' and `More of the Monkees') are out on
Arista. Bill Inglot did the usual great job remastering for CD.

923.1Can't help but like them...CIMNET::GRIFFITHTue Oct 13 1987 15:296

Super!! I love those two albums. Who cares if the Monkees don't
play on them; it's GREAT music. I guess Arista didn't give Rhino
the rights to release CD's. I'll be waiting for Headquarters, too.=,
though I don't know if there's plans to release them all. The first
two were by far the most popular.

I picked up MORE OF... the other day (Rockit didn't have the
first one). It sounds rather flat, but that's OK. It's only
    the Monkees, after all. :-)

I hope they release the others, too. HEADQUARTERS is my favorite.
It would be nice if they added "A Little Bit Me..." and its B-side
(the title of which escapes me at the moment) to the hypothetical
    HEADQUARTERS CD.

923.3Monkees CD'sCIMNET::GRIFFITHWed Oct 14 1987 10:5217

I picked up both last night at Rock'n'Mania Records in Framingham.
And their the Arista budget series (I paid only $11.99)!!
I think the slight flatness has completely to do with the fact that
the original masters have quite a bit of his - and I'm sure they're
using as much noise-reduction techniques as possible. And when you
do that, you tend to lose a bit of the high end. They still sound
INCREDIBLY better than my worn originals. I find also that the bass
needs a bit of boosting on my equalizer, but that's also the nature
of the original mixes. Chip Douglas was not too concerned with
recording quality when he produced them. And since their songs were
recorded by a professional studio band, with vocals being added
later by the Monkees, you'll tend to find that all the instrumentation
is recorded in mono - with vocals being split stereophonically.
It wasn't till their later albums where they finally utilized stereo
to its fullest. I, too, am hoping they release "Headquarters" and
"Pisces, Aquarius,..." - some superb stuff on that.

Well, if they ever release THE BIRDS, THE BEES, AND THE MONKEES,
I hope they *don't* clean up the hiss on (oh, hell, I don't
believe I can't remember the title!) the number that sounds like
it's playing on an old victrola. :-)

Sounds like Arista realized that if Rhino can make tons of money
selling the LPs, why let them get thegravy on the CDs as well.....

This is the same Arista that has sat on these recordings, and the
Nazz albums for about 15 years or so.....

These first two Monkeys CD's are part of Arista's "Nice Price" line.
    Let's hope there are starting a trend. $10 CD's That's the ticket.

Rather than *starting* a trend, they are following it. MCA, Motown,
and CBS, to name a few, have already had a "budget" line for a few
    months now.
