909.0. "Where are all the Live CDs?" by COOKIE::CHAVEZ (Dale C. - CXO3 Colo Spgs) Thu Sep 24 1987 15:56

This falls under 'MISC' questions. Is it a coincedence or is there a
particular reason that I can't find many 'live' CDs of older albums I
have? Some of the live albums that come to mind that I can't find on
CD:

    - Johnny and Edgar Winter Live
    - Eagles Live
    - Deep Purple Live
    - E.C. Was Here

Both of Rush's live albums "All the World's A Stage" and "Exit...Stage
Lef" are on CD, and they sound wonderful. Each of them had a song
removed to get them onto a CD, but you can't tell just by listening
unless you know what was on the original albums.

The only other live CDs I have are live performances of Beethoven's
Piano Concertos and Iron Maiden's "Live After Death" I'm not
really qualified to pass judgement on the Maiden album, and I don't
think the piano concertos are quite up your alley.

I would sure like a CD of Bob Seger's Live Bullet - it's a two

Nine Tonight, is also not on CD yet, but that's not as great an
    album.

Come to think of it I have U2's "Under a Blood Red Sky" - which
ain't bad. But that's a relatively recent recording.

I wonderwhat Humble Pie: Performance, Live at the Fillmore East,

    I'd suspect.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "Pictures at an Exhibition" is a live

If you like traditional 3 chord rockers, two of the best live
performances I know of are Springsteen's "Live 75-85" 3 disc set,
and Tom Petty's "Pack Up The Plantation" ( which I think is a 2
record set compressed onto a single disc for only a couple bucks
more than a single album). If you get the Springsteen, it's nice
to have the indexing feature - lame introductions, like the one
to "War", shouldn't have to be listened to more than once in a
lifetime. I always program by it.

I think the safest way to say this is:

The quality of the Woodstock CD is not important as the fact
that it digitally preserves three days of musical history.

Considering the probable quality of the source media, it is
    pretty good in places.

Dale - If you have a portable player, I'll bring the set in someday
so you can listen to it. At night though it will go home with me.

Live cd's that weren't mentioned that fit the hard rock taste.
Judas Priest Live and Scorpions have two live discs. The Judas priest
live is recorded DDD and is excellent sounding. It contains 73+
minutes and contains the entire 2 record set that was released on
LP. The Scorpions Live is also DDD and sounds excellent. It is close
to 70 minutes but two songs were cut off from the double album.
They also have an expensive import called Tokyo Tapes which is two
cd's. This recording is analog but it still sounds fairly good.
Led Zep live is another that sounds pretty good. This is also 2
discs. Some Enchanted Evening by Blue Oyster Cult. Another fair
recording. Live in Europe and The Concert by Creedence Clearwater
Revival. The Concert being the better of the two. Live at Leeds
by the Who. Though this one is a little less that fair. Wings over
America though expensive is excellent. Its a three record set put
on 2 cds. Alive she Cried by the Doors. Excellent sound quality
for such old recordings. Hendrix Live In Winterland. It is only
available on cd. The ultimate Hendrix live recording 73+ minutes.
I forgot to mention Priest in the East. A older live Judas Priest
cd that is a fairly good recording. Alice Cooper Show was released
a short time ago though I never heard it. Kiss Alive 1 and 2. Kiss
Alive 1 is terrible. Kiss Alive 2 I never heard but I would guess
that it would be fairly good. They are both double cds. Well i'm
sure there are a lot more but that is all I can think of off hand.
I hope I helped out a little anyway.

> is any good?

I haven't heard the CD, but I've had the album for years. Its
historic, in a way, representing Clapton's return to the music world
after a drying out period from heroin, but musically its sloppy
and generally disorganized. If you're really into Clapton, you
want this as a collectible. For me, who was once really into Clapton,
    possessing the record will suffice.

    Q. Which rock band has recorded the most live albums?

    A. The Grateful Dead, and they are on their way to answering the
same trivia question about CDs. Skull & Roses (really titled "The
Grateful Dead) is a two album set available for a good price on
one CD. Its definitive dead. Others out now are For the Faithful
(once titled "Reckoning" - I don't know why they changed, but I
noticed its marketed by Pear Records instead of the original Arista)
which is all acoustic, and Dead Set, from the same time period,
but electric, not the best choice of Dead music, but close to what
    they are still like today.

One live CD that hasn't been mentioned yet - The Everly Brothers'
Reunion Concert. I believe this was *the first* live offering of
any kind on the CD format. The sound is fantastic - as are the
selections and performance. Running time is around 70 minutes -
I believe that one or two selections were cut from the original
concert (which was shown on HBO), but the cuts were not classic
    Everly tunes.

do not like to stock double CD's because of the greater losses they
suffer when they get ripped off. I guess shoplifting is a big deal
among the retailers because CD's are easier to steal than albums.
This may explain part of the difficulty in finding live cd's since
they are relatively often doubles. Also explains the Sprinsteen

Neil Young's "Live Rust" just came out. It is on one CD, without
any song deletions. It is selling for about $17.99 or so.

re Simon and Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park.

I just got Noteworthy's catalog yesterday (after ordering the day
before, boy they are fast!) and sure enough under the new releases
was Concert in Central Park. I haven't had time to put together
an order to find out if they have any in stock.

re Simon and Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park.

I ordered it from Noteworthy (about $13.00) the day Noteworthy got
it according to the guy on the phone. It's playing at this very
    moment.

My CD player insists that it's 76:03 in length. hmmmm...

The playlist is the same as the double LP (which apparently
means that Strawberries can charge $18.00 for it...)

The liner notes are the same as came with the album save that all
of the interior pictures are in black and white.

    The sound is very good.

All in all, one very nice, live CD. Worth the wait (anyone have
any idea why it took so long? I would have thought this album was
    rather ripe for "CDhood".)

909.55Anybody seen Jethro Tull??SLDA1::MITHALWed Jul 06 1988 11:0510
Has anybody seen Jethro Tull's live album "Bursting Out" anywhere?

Any info would be appreciated. I think it is one of the best live
albums around- not just for music content, but also Ian Anderson's
showmanship (You could hear all his comments clearly on the LP,
so they should be even better on CD)

    Thanks

Noteworthy says that it'll be released 12-Jul-88. That usually
means they'll have it available that day after noon time.
