873.0. "CD Cutouts are Here!!!!!" by AQUA::ROST (You used me for an ashtray heart) Mon Aug 24 1987 09:35

Two big surprises this Saturday at the Strawberries in Shrewsbury,
    MA.....

    1. CD Cutouts

Yep, with the old Strawberries "manufacturer's overstock" sticker
on 'em. $8.99 and $9.99. Most of the bin consisted of a soundtrack
to "Guys and Dolls" but I picked up a Dave Holland Quintet CD that
I have been listening to on tape for the last three years for only
$9.99. Hopefully, there will be more to come.

Anybody seen cutouts at the other Strawberries yet?

    2. Motown Twofers

With the introduction of the 9000 series, I figured Motown was splitting
up some of their twofers, selling the single CDs at medium price
and the twofers at full price. Now, I'm confused. I picked up
Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" as a twofer with "Let's Get It On"
for a *regular* price of $10.99; at that price it is cheaper than
the vinyl (2 Lps at $5.98 each). A lot of the other twofers were
also $10.99, none of them with 9000 series numbers. I know that
"Let's Get It On" is available in the 9000 series as a single CD...how
much can they be selling it for????

I *did* see a number of 9000 series CDs, such as the "18 Command
Performance" packages and the "Marvin Gaye and his Women" package
(22 songs!!!) all of which were $10.99.

Yeah, Strawberries in Auburn has a CD cut-out bin also. The selection
was as good as you stated Shrewsbury was.

I suppose it was inevitable that some buyer would order *something*
    they couldn't sell out...

873.2Drillouts?ALL4S::THOMASA legend in his own lunchtimeMon Aug 24 1987 16:317
I found some cutouts at a store in Ft. Lauderdale. They drill a
hole in the spine of the jewel case. Does this make them drillouts?

Just for a laugh, I bought the 2nd Twisted Sister album (I forget
it's name). It's pretty bad (although I did like their first album).

873.3Even out here they're costing less!NCADC1::PEREZThe sensitivity of a dung beetle.Tue Aug 25 1987 00:1914
Musicland out here in Minneapolis is selling CDs on the Stradivari
label for $8.99. There were a bunch of classical titles, for example
I got Mozart Symphony #40 and # 38, Eine Kleine Nichtmusic and symphony
#41, etc. Also Beethoven Piano concertos, and Bach Piano Concerto
    #3 and Overture #3.

They also had the Phillips Silver line for 9.99. And Deutsche
    Grammaphone Galleria for $10.99.

The quality seems to be good and the performers included the Academy
of St. Martins-in-the-fields, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Claudio
    Abbado.

Various Strawberries stores have had CD "cutouts" for quite some
time. I bought a *load* of London classical CD's for $9.99 each,
as well as a few rock and jazz CD's on Mercury.

By the way, I've seen that GUYS AND DOLLS CD for as little as
    $5.99.

873.5Cheap... If you can find what you want...STAR06::SELBYMon Aug 31 1987 21:147
I have seen several rock titles in the "cut-outs" bin. But the
prices here have been $4.99 for cutouts. Included was the afore
mentions TS disc and some Peter Frampton, Julian Lennon, and a few
    movie soundtracks.

873.6Devo & Hendrix: Together againMUSTNG::MGINGRASSat Sep 19 1987 09:5911
The most interesting thing i've seen in cheap cd's wasn't a cutout.
it was a sampler on the RYKO label titled "STEAL THIS DISC" and
    it
sold for between $5 and $6 at Strawberries. The selection had every
possible genre of music (Devo to Hendrix to Norman Blake) and they
were in a sufficiently mixed order to cause possible brain damage.
I didn't buy the sampler but I have RYKO'S "Hendrix at Winterland"
    and I love it.

    digression

Once or twice I've wondered if shop owners would have any problems
prosecuting someone who has stolen a cd labeled "STEAL THIS DISC".
