|
there's a new collection out that claims to have the best of 10cc
*and* Godley and Creme on one disc. I haven't heard it so I can't
comment, but it's been in the UK for a few weeks now, so if they're
going to release it stateside it should be soon I imagine.

10cc's "The Original Soundtrack" is available in the UK as a mid-price
CD at 8.99 - about $14.50. I just got it today.
Sound quality 10 Music 10
Appearance 10 Price 10 Compactness 10 Roundness of Disc 10 :-)
Oh all right, I like it a bit.
Its bloody marvellous! NO noise NO hiss NOTHING but GREAT MUSIC.
Wendy and I met and courted to this album and we are listening to
it now, marvelling at the clarity. All I can say is that you should
buy it, now, if not before...
Wendy says I should be a little more positive about this CD.
I'm so chuffed at the quality of this CD that I'm prepared to make a
first-come-first-served-offer: I'm visiting the USA from this Friday
for 5 or 6 days, if you want a copy, drop me some mail. I'll be working
in LKG (Littleton), but staying in Merrimack, so if you work nearby you
can meet me to pick it up. I'll be back in November if this is too
short notice.

866.5 | Original Soundtrack import at BCD | BAVIKI::GOOD | Michael Good | Tue Sep 08 1987 10:12 | 9 |
| Hooray! Boston Compact Disc in Harvard Square had an import copy of
The Original Soundtrack at the same time they had a sale on all discs!
So I picked up a copy for $16 (regularly $18).
I agree completely with .3. If you buy rock CD's and you still
think "it can't sound really good unless it's DDD", try this disc!
Now for the other goodies, which hopefully will be released over
time as part of the same mid-priced series.

| re .9
I've searched all over Burlington, Vermont with no luck. When I
ask if they're expecting it soon they ask, "10cc? Are they a rock
group?" The one place I went to that knows who 10cc is, they only
had the Best of 10cc on CD. No luck, as of yet, here in Burlington
Vt.

| Re .9, .10:
Despite jokes about the "People's Republic of Massachusetts", Harvard
Square in Cambridge, Mass. is part of the USA. Right now all 10cc
discs I've seen are imports, not domestically released, so you need to
go to a store that handles imports. You might have to special order
it. The store in Burlington, VT may be able to order Original
Soundtrack for you, since they already have one of 10cc's import disc.

866.14 | Anyone want "Original Soundtrack"? | GUNSTK::MGINGRAS | Now I try to be amused . . . | Sat Oct 03 1987 16:21 | 19 |
| "Original Soundtrack lovers" - I just saw a copy of it at
Manchester Compact Disc in Manchester, N.H. The owner told me he
sells a copy of it each week and re-orders regularly.
price - $17.99 (I think, but it might be $18.99)
Is anybody REALLY desparate for a copy? If the copy he has is gone
on Monday, he could probably get another. I'd be happy to accomodate
anyone who sends me an Email message in trying to get one.
I'll also mention this here in case I don't get it anywhere else.
They have about 5 copies of the U2 single "Street with No Name"
and three other songs. The compact 45's come in cardboard folders.
Price for U2 was $12.99.
For Fairport Freaks, he had "Liege & Lief" for $22.99. Lots of
other great imports, mostly priced at $19.99.

"Original Soundtrack" is priced as a mid-price in the UK. Thus you
are paying double!

866.16 | "Original Soundtrack" - just an import in US | LOONMT::MGINGRAS | Now I try to be amused . . . | Mon Oct 05 1987 09:56 | 13 |
| RE: 866.15 That's exactly true, but I know I read somewhere else
in this conference (maybe not in this note section) that Polygram
released some of their "special price" series in Europe and some
in the U.S., but not all titles in both places.
The copy I saw had the exact cover art (colored rainbow in the lower
left hand corner with the words 'special price') as the $10.99 series
available here in the US. It may be specially priced in the UK,
but here its just another import. Has anybody overseas seen the
Jam's "Setting Sons" in the same Polygram format? Copies here are
plentiful and cost $10.99 (less if you hit a Polygram sale).

If it says "Special Price:" then the dealer almost certainly got
it at a cheap rate and is REALLY ripping you off. I'd ask him to
double check his price because this is REALLY wrong!
I've seen the JAM "Nice Price" CD here too. Not my taste though...

866.18 | Imports = $ | BAVIKI::GOOD | Michael Good | Mon Oct 05 1987 15:55 | 5 |
| Imports cost more. Even with LP's, an import Canadian "special price"
album will cost more than most normal domestic albums. $17.99
isn't that much above the non-sale price of most store CD's. That's
what BCD was selling it for normally, but I bought it when all discs
were $2 off.

| I saw the same Style Council Special Price CD that I had bought for DM 21.50

If it's Polygram Special Price it *shouldn't* be priced like an import.

866.20 | ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK must be an import | MUSTNG::MGINGRAS | Roll Over, Chuck Berry! | Mon Oct 26 1987 13:13 | 20 |
| I've finished some question asking concerning the Polydor SPECIAL
PRICE series. (Re. .17, .19). Refer also to note 902.15 for a
list of the artists released in this series. It also notes at the
bottom that because this is a world-wide series, not all the titles
in the series are available on all continents.
A regional manager I spoke to at Strawberries has never seen a copy
of the 10CC ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK disc, which is unusual if it has
been released domestically because they carry the complete series
of Polydor SPECIAL PRICE discs. The manager at Manchester CD gets
this disc in only as an import with all his other imports. He sells
it for $17.99 which, he says, is a special price because most imports
sell for $19.99 (or more). In all the CD stores I've been in during
the last 3 years and all the CD's I've looked at, I've never seen
another copy of it.
Conclusion: it's not a ripoff, it's an import.

866.23 | Freeze Frame on CD! | BAVIKI::GOOD | Michael Good | Mon Feb 08 1988 12:15 | 32 |
| I couldn't believe it when I read it in the Green CD Guide, but now I
have my own copy! Godley & Creme's "Freeze Frame" album is now on CD
on Polydor. It looks like the same Polydor European budget line that
"Original Soundtrack" is on. It was $12 or $13 at Tower Records in
Boston.
The bad news is that there are no lyrics or music credits (the original
album had nice credits - pictures of the musicians and the instruments
used in each tune).
The good news far outweighs the bad. For me, this is one of 2 great
albums that Godley & Creme made after leaving 10cc - the previous
album, "L", is my other favorite. It's hard to describe the music if
you haven't heard the original 10cc or other Godley & Creme material.
The closest comparison I can think of is Frank Zappa, and that's
stretching it a bit. But if you're adventurous, give it a try.
The sound is great. The songs are:
An Englishman in New York
Random Brainwave
I Pity Inanimate Objects
Freeze Frame
Clues
Brazilia (Wish You Were Here)
Mugshots
Get Well Soon
"An Englishman in New York" comes from this album - it was later
reissued on "The History Mix, Vol. 1." I've heard "I Pity Inanimate
Objects" get airplay on WZBC's "No Commercial Potential" program. "Get
Well Soon" lampoons Radio Luxembourg ("Do they only program music to
accompany my cough?").

866.24 | Goodbye Blue Sky - Godley & Creme's latest | BAVIKI::GOOD | Michael Good | Mon Apr 04 1988 12:53 | 27 |
| Godley & Creme have a new CD out - "Goodbye Blue Sky". The cover photo
shows an arm holding up a harmonica in the Grand Canyon. Indeed, the
harmonica plays a very prominent part on this album. Unlike the other
Godley & Creme albums in which the duo plays (nearly) everything,
"Goodbye Blue Sky" is an ensemble effort between G&C, two harmonica
players, and 3 black vocalists. The sound is of course quite a bit
different from other G&C efforts. The first few tracks sound like this
is going to be the most mainstream of their albums, but things get
stranger towards the end.
I've only listened to this once through. So far my favorite cut is
"The Big Bang" - a fast blues tune about, um, the big bang. One of the
funniest blues tunes I've heard in a while!
I got my copy at Tower Records. Their in-house music magazine, Pulse!,
had a long feature article on Godley & Creme's career as musicians,
video directors, and more. It's a very interesting article. It
looks like this duo is going to get some significant promotion in the
US, probably for the first time since they split from 10cc. It will be
intersting to see how well they do commercially with this one.
I recommend this for someone who likes their rock music a little
offbeat, for 10cc and Godley and Creme fans, or for anyone who is a
harmonica fan.
P.S. - It's AAD, claimed to have been recorded at Creme's home studio.
The sound is good, but not great.
