| There's a note I started called "Good News for Blues Fans". I
forget what the note # is. Do a DIR/TITLE=BLUES and you should
find it.
I've got a handful of blues CD's, all of which I like. Since a
number of them are quite old recordings, sound quality isn't big
on the list. I mostly got them for the artists. Among them are:
GOLDEN AGE OF CHICAGO BLUES (Vogue import): good anthology, with
people like Otis Rush, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, et alia.
Howlin' Wolf's THE LONDON SESSIONS (Vogue import): classic Wolf
tunes done with an amazing back-up band, consisting of Clapton,
Wyman, Watts, and Winwood.
B.B. King's LIVE AT THE REGAL/LIVE AT THE COOK COUNTY JAIL (MCA
"twofer") The second is one of my favorite BB albums.
Freddy King's TAKIN' CARE OF BUSINESS (import) A number of his
classic tunes.
Buddy Guy's LIVE AT THE CHECKERBOARD LOUNGE. Somewhat of a
disappointment. Some good music, but it's later material and I
don't think it quite makes the grade.
Roy Buchanan's WHEN A GUITAR SINGS THE BLUES and DANCING ON THE
EDGE. The former is a great album; the latter rather disappointing.
Lonnie Mack's STRIKE LIKE LIGHTNING. An album from a couple of
years ago, co-produced (with guest guitarring) by Stevie Ray
Vaughan. Great stuff.
Speaking of SRV, all of his albums should qualify. Great stuff.
"Tin Pan Alley" on COULDN'T STAND THE WEATHER sounds really clean.
I've got all of George Thorogood & the Destroyers' Rounder albums
on CD. All great stuff. I didn't think as much of BAD TO THE BONE
or MAVERICK, so I haven't picked those up (yet). The live album
wasn't quite up to what I'd expected.
I can't think of any others right now, as my brain is baked.

I've got a couple of blues discs, one I recommend, the other I
recommend you stay away from. The good one is an early British
version of blues: John Mayall & the Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton.
The sound is very clean and Mayall plays some of the great guitar
lines he's forgotten over the past 10 years. On the London label
with a classic photo of Mayall, Clapton and John McVie on the cover.
As a bonus, it's digitally remastered. I have an original copy
on vinyl I bought in 1966 - to me these versions are timeless.
Now the bad disc: Muddy Waters "hard Again". I have a bunch of
Bluesky recordings on vinyl and none of them sound this bad. Digital
remastering doesn't help the poor production (Johnny Winters, producer)
and sloppy engineering. If anyone has another opinion of this one,
I'm willing to remain open-minded and give it another chance. Maybe
I'm missing something there.

guitar.

Hi folks.
My former room of two years had a large blues collection on vinyl.
Alas, he moved to Arlington, VA. last july. I've been making due
with radio Blues, but I'd like to start collecting some blues on CD.
I'm looking for your opinions, not facts, so don't be afraid
give me judgements.
My questions for you all (yunz to yunz Pittsburghers :-) ) are :
1) What are your favorite Blues albums?
2) of those, which are worth having on CD?
I consider an album is worth having on CD if
a) the sound quality is very good (like Pink Floyd albums)
b) I get more than minutes of music than I would on vinyl.
c) I'm going to play it ALOT.
d) It has material only available on a CD
(out of print, or even a B side of single)
With your help, I'll have them Blues to chase away them nasty
I Hate Radio/MTV Pop Trash Blues.
Thanks,
Paul Komar.
P.S. Blues artists that I know I like :
Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Sunny Seals, Lonnie Mack,
Albert(s) King and Collins. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Koko Taylor,
Yes I have a taste for electric blues.

These are some of the Blues CD's that I can recommend:
<various artists> The Golden Age of Chicago Blues
Bloomfield, Kooper, & Stills Super Session
Albert Collins, Robert Cray & Johnny Copeland Showdown!
B.B. King Blues 'N' Jazz [combined with]
The Electric B.B. King-His Best
Live at the Regal [combined with]
Live in Cook County Jail
Freddie King Takin' Care of Business
Lonnie Mack Strike Like Lightning
Duke Robillard & the Pleasure Kings Rockin' Blues
You Got Me
George Thorogood & The Destroyers George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Move It On Over
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Texas Flood
Couldn't Stand the Weather
Willie and the Poor Boys Willie and the Poor Boys
Howlin' Wolf Howlin' for My Baby
The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions
All of them are pretty much the same (as far as tracks go) to their
LP counterparts, with the following exceptions:
Duke Robillard's ROCKIN' BLUES is a compilation of his first
two albums, and three songs (total) are left off for the CD.
THE LONDON HOWLIN' WOLF SESSIONS I've only seen on LP in
abbreviated form as half-an-LP. It's a must if you want to
hear an introduction to "Little Red Rooster" in which Howlin'
has to show Eric Clapton how to play slide guitar!
The Willie and the Poor Boys album is more on the rockabilly side
than the blues side, but it has a couple of terrific blues cuts.

863.9 | | NEWS::HAKKARAINEN | I hear some noting downstairs | Wed Jan 04 1989 06:29 | 5 |
| I'd addd a couple of favorite bands, old and new: Paul Butterfield's
Blue Band (the first two albums are on cd) and Ronnie Earl and the
Broadcasters. The sound quality of the Butterfield stuff varies a lot
from tune to tune; RE&tB are much better. East-West is one of my
desert-island recordings.

863.10 | | HAZEL::STARR | Like a fool, fell in love with you... | Wed Jan 04 1989 08:01 | 13 |
| Well, I must admit I am a fan of the white-boy blues, and here are a
couple of my favorites:
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs....
Eric Clapton - Just One Night (live LP)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Live Alive
Allman Bros. - Live at the Fillmore East
These are all sorta obvious titles, but they are also all great performances
by some of the best blues-rock guitarists around, IMO. I have all of these on
CD, and never once regretted spending the money.

| sorta a combo of the people mentioned in .8 & .10 would
be the Duane Allman "Anthology" Album. This is a 2 CD
set, with the first disc being studio work Duane did
with BB King, King Curtis, Aretha, Boz Scaggs, and
others, The second disc is stuff with Derek and the
Dominoes, Eric Clapton, and The Allman Brothers. Real
fine resume of tunes, so to speak. Note, There is an
Anthology Vol 2, I am not familiar with it, as I had
many of the Albums, already.
I'll also 2nd the Super Session reccomendation.
