861.0. "Beatles White Album on CD" by COOKIE::CHAVEZ (Dale C. - CXO3 Colo Spgs) Thu Aug 13 1987 18:10

Although there are at least 4 topics related to Beatle CDs, I think
it's time for a new note related to just one CD: The White
Album.

Does anyone have a specific date for the relase of the White Album?

Hopefully, when it gets released, folks will use this note to review
the CD. It's getting harder to muddle through all the Beatle-related
replies to find a review.

RE: .1. I recently timed the complete "White Album"; it comes to over 75
minutes if you allow for some (small) amount of time between selections. That
would seem to make it impossible to get the whole thing on one CD. (Although
if they eliminated "Revolution #9" from the remastering I have to admit I
wouldn't be too depressed...)

Yep, looks like two CDs, probably in a double-cd jewel box. I
also heard Aug. 25th, so that's probably it. Yellow Sub. is coming
out around the same time, but that will probably be the first of
the CDs that I won't buy right away, with the whole second side
being instrumentals. 'Hey Bulldog' is great, though. This one
should have impressive sound quality, I'm hoping.

It is unfortunate that the one Beatles album that was done under pressure will
get released on CD. Well, actually, "A Collection of Oldies" was put out to
pacify fans who had come to expect a new album every Christmas, and THAT
mistake didn't get repeated on CD. Still, Yellow Submarine has a neat cover
even if the album is nonrepresentative of the movie and too much of a
hodgepodge of different periods of the group's development to hold together as
an album side. I don't plan to buy it, however. I'm going to wait and see if
they're kind enough to the fans to take the A-side material (minus the theme
song, which appeared on "Revolver") and integrate it with the other rarities,
45's and EP's in their compilation that's supposed to come out later in the
year (in time for Christmas). It will also be interesting to see whether they
eventually release EVERYTHING on CD, including "Love Songs", just to make more
money. Rock 'n Mania is of the impression that the White Album will cost MORE
than two normal CD's, to take advantage of its cult popularity as the "best"
Beatles album.

Hmmmm. just wondering and it doesn't make any difference to me but,
wasn't "Magical Mystery Tour" supposed to come out before the "White
Album" ? I mean if you want to get technical about it and keep
the releases in chronilogical order... Or, are the releases only
what the British saw for releases and not the US ? And then what
does that mean about the "Hey Jude" album of 'b' sides and whatever?
And then there is the "Christmas Fan Club Messages" album....

MORE than a double-cd costs? Unfortunately, it's too much in demand
for consumers to boycott it. For that price, they had better have
some decent packaging, unlike the first 7 discs.

    re:.7
Yes, they're going by the original British album releases. Magical
Mystery Tour was a set of 2 ep's in Britain, and Hey Jude never
was released except as a single. I'm glad to hear that Capitol
is thinking of releasing a collection of singles and stuff not on
    the albums.
I think we're lapsing into a generic Beatle's CD discussion, like
    in the original note.....

I've got an idea that would make (maybe) the white album worth the
price of a double cd set. Why don't they include the gibberish
found at the end of "Blackbird" that when played backwards is supposed
to say, "Paul is dead now, miss him, miss him, miss him..." and
"Number Nine" ("Turn me on dead man") and put those on the tail
end of #2 cd backwards so we all can hear! They could run out the
    cd that way!

Actually, I read a joke some time ago suggesting they make
CD players that would play tracks backwards so we could
easily listen to all this "backwards masking" supposedly in
the music (including the theme from "Mr. Ed"!) Might make some
    sense out of Revolution #9!

I In NY the DJs have started playing the white album. No mention
of whether it's a double or a single, but they did say that instead
of the usual lack band on the side of the jewel case, this one is
white (nice touch!). Exerpts from the album over the radio sounded
terrific. The remastering seems to of caused a much rawer sound.
Paul's bass and Ringo's drums seem much more intense than I remember
on the album, even on a song like Dear Prudence! It's really something
to look forward to! By the way, in NY they're announce release

Supposedly the Mr. Ed theme contained "someone sung this song
for Satan". It's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of,
though the guy who wrote the song was thrilled, as he got
royalties every time a radio station played it during this latest
    craze.

When I was in college, I played Revolution #9 backwards on a tape
deck, and couldn't hear anything specific. The great thing about
the human mind is that it can hear (and see) familiar patterns
    where no patterns really exist.

On the original Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention "We're
Only In It For The Money" album, the liner note made reference to
a verse that had been censored from the song "We Are The Other People,"
but which was hidden backwards on the other side of the album.
    Sure enough, it was there.

On the cd re-release, the verse has been restored to it's rightful,

861.18Backwards MaskingROCKON::RADLERTue Aug 18 1987 11:5926
Back in 1968 when Paul was rumoured to have been killed in
a car crash in 1966 and a Canadian was to have taken his place,
My uncle sent me some tapes from Hawaii. The station was playing
some of the Beatles songs backwards. My uncle taped them for me.
I played Revolution number 9 numerous times. There is no doubt that
the Beatles were playing games with us. I'm pretty sure it was John.
They definitely backward masked a car crash and flames burning and
a bunch of other things. After I'm so Tired there is backward masking
of John saying Paul is dead now miss him, miss him, miss him. There
is a whole lot of other clues. It started with Sgt Pepper all the
way to Abbey Road. I was taken in then but I think it was kind of
    neat now.

I know this doesn't belong here but here goes anyway. Just
as I thought the hidden messages of the Beatles was ingenious. I
thought Stairway To Heaven backwards masking is not. I've definitely
heard 7 different satanic messages while playing the song backwards.
I know for a fact Jimmy Page is into black magic which is fine for
him but I don't want to be subjected to it. If a recording artist
wants to sing about satan then let him do it up front not inserting
backwards messages to try and trick their fans. I think playing
games is fine but let's not get carried away.

Okay I'll bite. What sort of messages? Page has certainly taken the rap
for a lot of things (Plant's son dying of some unknown diesease, Bonham
drinking himself to death, living in Aleistar Crowley's house - a known
satanic figure) but...

I always thought backwards messages (ie Mr Ed) were people looking for
something where nothing existed.

I'm a great fan of Led Zepplin and have all their discs. I could
care less that Page used backwards masking. Like someone said who
plays records backwards except if they are looking for something.
I was just stating that the satanic messages where there. Just like
Lennon backward masked on the white album. I thought it was ingenious.
I still think Page to be a great guitarist but does he sit there
every night thinking everytime stairway to heaven is played his
satanic messages are being unknowingly heard. Messages which say
Satan is God and 666. Personally I think the guy is an idiot but
I still enjoy his music. Someday he'll have to answer and it won't
be one of his fans that's for sure.

Expect competition the week the White Album comes out. If you don't buy it
that week, you might as well forget about a discount in the future.

I espect MMT will be the British EP. If not, hopefully they'll use the long
version of Penny Lane (available only on German pressings, of which I have a
copy) and the true stereo of "Baby, You're a Rich Man", as well as the longer
version of "All You Need Is Love".

I had rented some video tape about the beatles at one
time. They said that the album "The Beatles" (ie.
White Album) was a pretty ironic name for it, since
it was the one album where it really wasn't "The Beatles"
as one. It is their own individuals that show up on
this album. I'm not sure, but I think each of the
four had their own side on the album.

While it's true The Beatles were no longer a band as they had been,
but rather acted as session-men for each other, it would be wrong
to say each of them got 1 side (or the time equivalent) of the album.
George and Ringo inevitably got the short end of the stick.

Of all their albums, the White Album is the least of a group effort.
On different occasions, different members walked out calling it quits,
only to return in the next few days. Someone mentioned earlier that
when one member had a song, the other three acted merely as session
men. Actually, that's probably only true for Ringo, and maybe John.
As for Paul, I'm pretty sure that he was his own session man.

What I like most about the album is that each member (John and Paul in
particular) was able to work outside the confines of the group. John
didn't have to make his songs fit with Paul's and vice versa. The
result is an album of songs, each different, which truly reflects each
member, and yet the flow of the album is incredibly smooth. It's
as if they've allowed us to see the group as a whole, by examining
    the individuals.

I can't wait for next week's release. My only question now is:

I think the movie Jeff is refering to is the Compleat Beatles.
The movie also stated that the Beatles decided to go back to the
group formula with their great vocal harmonies on Abbey Road. I
think they knew they were heading for a split and wanted to go out
with a strong group effort. I read someplace that Paul used to play
a lot of drums on different Beatles songs. I think A Day in the
Life and Sgt Pepper were two of them. Also I read that Ballard of
John and Yoko was Paul and John playing all the instruments. Even
though the White Album was not a real group effort it is truely
an incredible album containing I think 30 songs. Excluding Revolution
#9 (which I think was Yoko's contribution) I think every song was
great and different in some ways from anything they had recorded
before. I can't wait to play the White Disc.

Strawberries wanted $25.?? (no sales price available). Both

I was a little surprised to find out that it is two seperate
jewel boxes. When people in this topic kept saying a double
jewel box, I thought they ment one double sized box (like
    for Billy Joel's Greatest Hits).

The pull out on disc #1 has a number printed on it (my number
is 309002). Does anyone else have a different number?

The jewel boxes are White, as are the side of the cd's
where the printing is on (the lettering is black).

It doesn't say whether it is AAD or ADD as far as I can see.

The booklet with disc #1 has the lryics for all the songs, as
well as some very weird pictures. The small poster sized
pictures (4 of them, one of each of the beatles) that came
with the LP are only pictures in the booklet.

Okay, I admit it. I didn't buy Yellow Submarine for the
Beatles songs. I bought it for the George Martin stuff.
The Beatles songs, as a matter of fact, were never on my
hit parade, however, I have always been fond of the George
Martin material. I always thought it was nice that he got
a side of an album to show off.

The sound of the orchestra is wonderful. The arrangements
are lush and conjure images of the animation. BTW, the
home version video of Yellow Submarine is due for release
    very soon.

the 'wierd pictures' are from the poster originally issued
with the LP that had the lyrics on the other side. All they've
done is pare it down into smaller sections.

I get the impression that it is AAD given the amount of hiss
at the opening of Martha My Dear (the first song I wanted to
    hear).

If I recall correctly, the original pressing of the LP was
numbered as well. I was surprised and pleased to see that
they did the same thing with the CD. And the white jewel-box
    inserts were striking!

Oddly enough, BCD did *not* have them in this morning; their
sign said the 26th! Newbury Comics hadn't gotten them into
the store as of about noon, either, though the guy said they
expected them in later in the afternoon. Strawberries had it
for $25.99, Discount Records for $22.99, and the Coop for
$21.98 (and YELLOW SUBMARINE was $12.99).

    Sounds great.

Got mine at Lechmere in Framingham...the last one in the bins!!!
It's too bad they didn't include wallet-sized pictures of the Fab
Four, instead of copying them into the booklet. For 11.99 I had
to get Yellow Submarine (It's All Too Much is worth the price of
admission), but I was disappointed to find that they did not include
the art and story found on the back of the Lp; there were, however,
liner notes by Derek Taylor. But, hey, as long as the music sounds
    good...
861.46REGENT::SCHMIEDERWed Aug 26 1987 13:5955
"Yellow Submarine" was packaged slightly differently in the U.K. than in the
U.S., and I didn't notice any differences between the insert and the jacket
for the vinyl.

I have not listened to "The Beatles" yet, nor do I know my number. I bought
the original when it first came out, but sold it many years ago when I bought
the imports. Since this was the one import I never found new, I have never had
a good copy as mine was scratchy (still superior to the U.S. pressing,
though!). I am PARTTICULARLY looking forward to hearing "Birthday", and of
perhaps being able to make out more of what's going on in "Revolution 9".

As for "Yellow Submarine", I decided for $11.98 that it was worth it, even
though the album wasn't done (originally) the way it should have been, as a
true soundtrack movie. I will have to say that, thus far, this album has
impressed me the most of any! The clarity on "All Together Now" gives that
song an entirely new meaning (I used to think it was hunky-dorey, but now I
see it as a highly accurate period tribute), and "Only a Northern Song" seems
more clearly to have come out of the "Revolver" mold than before. This, due to
McCartney's bass playing and Ringo's subtle percussion work. These two songs
sound completely different to me now.

I was disappointed in "Hey Bulldog", which sounded identical to the U.K. vinyl
(which is great, but I was hoping for new insights) and ESPECIALLY "It's All
Too Much". The latter is a piece I never cared much for until recently, and
only then after hearing pre-Steve Perry Journey's rendition. On this disc,
McCartney's drone bass line is so boomy in tonal quality and so dark sounding
that this piece loses all its warmth (Harrison's vocals also sound deadpan on
this particular number, whereas one would expect more emotion). It DOES sound
different from the vinyl, but sounds worse to my ears.

The big surprise was "All You Need Is Love " (I'm ignoring "Yellow Submarine",
which I did not listen to to verify that it was the same mix as on "Revolver").
This song drove me crazy last night, but perhaps it was meant to! The beat is
all over the place! Actually, there was a consistency to it, and I think it
was intentional, to give it a drugged-out sound. I never noticed this before,
but haven't listened to it in awhile since I don't like the song (funny, since
it was one of my early favourites). McCartney seems to be playing slightly
behind the beat, consistently, but then gets ahead of the beat on the cadences.
This gives the entire piece a sound of rushing, like a sloppy high school band.

I'm almost embarassed to admit it, but George Martin's score was a lot better
than I remembered, and was actually quite enjoyable except for that ridiculous
"theme and variations" treatment of "Yellow Submarine" at the end. This music
sounded great on CD, very natural and very much benefitted by the high S/N.

I still maintain that much of jazz is hurt by CD technology, but it is becoming
clear to me that much of music that is dependent mostly on mid-range for its
effect is FAR superior on CD, particularly in terms of vocals and orchestral
instruments.

I did not notice whether either CD was AAD or ADD, or whether it was even
marked as to which it was.

I think the U.K. releases of many of these discs have had fancier
packaging than the U.S. ones. I know the first four Beatles' cds
were available together in a 12" square box (BCD had a copy). Also,
"Sgt. Pepper's ..." came in a cardboard slipcover. It doesn's surprise
me that they should have fancied up the "The Beatles" album as well.
Personally, I prefer they single jewel boxes, since they fit in
my Add-'n'-Stack drawers, but it would be fun to see the other
    packaging.

Interesting thing about "Savvoy Truffle" This song is about
Eric Clapton (according to George Harrison's book, "I ME, MINE")
and his addiction to candy, particularily chocolates. Hence the
line, "you'll have to have them all pulled out after the Savvoy

In the US (it seems) the double jewel boxes are a pain because they
    don't fit the standard 2 foot x 4 foot anti-theft cartons! Elsewhere
(in Europe at least) double jewel boxes are quite common - especially
for classical music. (I've got a Bach collection of 4 CDs in one
"double" box - mind you, the book is separate). Also I think that
the serial numbers are a bit lower (where were the US CDs actually
manufactured, by the way?), mine is in the 20,000s.

Most CD storage systems in Europe come in single and double versions
so that its no problem from that point of view.

My Genesis discs are European. I don't like that format, as its less
flexible, the direction of lettering on the spine reverses for the second
disc, and the second disc is on bottom instead of top (or on the left instead
of on the right).

My White Album has no number, and was bought at Lechmere in Framingham. The
book is also damaged as thet tried too hard to squeeze it into the case.

I listened to side one last night. Sounded completely identical to the
British import vinyl. Maybe, as with Sgt. Pepper, the way this album was
produced left little room to manoeuvre in terms of remixing.

Not that there was a need for remixing on this album, for the most part.

With This Topic going on, I don't beleive that being close
to EMI Parlophone gets you the lowest numbers.

Near the East Coast, in Montreal I got 012229.
    	(For CDN$28 = US$20.00) (+9% Tax)

Maybe the initial excitement has waned a little, but I don't find
    these numbers very interesting anymore!

BTW, on the HMV notes (additional to the CD booklet) they mentioned
that the original LP appeared to be serially numbered, but wasn't.
The only way to find out about the CD, however, is to list all numbers
until we find a duplication (if any). I'm not suggesting that we
should - but maybe it could be a separate note so that uninterested
    parties could skip it (please!).
