Yep, looks like two CDs, probably in a double-cd jewel box. I
also heard Aug. 25th, so that's probably it. Yellow Sub. is coming
out around the same time, but that will probably be the first of
the CDs that I won't buy right away, with the whole second side
being instrumentals. 'Hey Bulldog' is great, though. This one

| It is unfortunate that the one Beatles album that was done under pressure will
get released on CD. Well, actually, "A Collection of Oldies" was put out to
pacify fans who had come to expect a new album every Christmas, and THAT
mistake didn't get repeated on CD. Still, Yellow Submarine has a neat cover
even if the album is nonrepresentative of the movie and too much of a
hodgepodge of different periods of the group's development to hold together as
an album side. I don't plan to buy it, however. I'm going to wait and see if
they're kind enough to the fans to take the A-side material (minus the theme
song, which appeared on "Revolver") and integrate it with the other rarities,
45's and EP's in their compilation that's supposed to come out later in the
year (in time for Christmas). It will also be interesting to see whether they
eventually release EVERYTHING on CD, including "Love Songs", just to make more
money. Rock 'n Mania is of the impression that the White Album will cost MORE
than two normal CD's, to take advantage of its cult popularity as the "best"
Beatles album.

Yes, they're going by the original British album releases. Magical
Mystery Tour was a set of 2 ep's in Britain, and Hey Jude never
was released except as a single. I'm glad to hear that Capitol
is thinking of releasing a collection of singles and stuff not on
the albums.
I think we're lapsing into a generic Beatle's CD discussion, like

Supposedly the Mr. Ed theme contained "someone sung this song

| Back in 1968 when Paul was rumoured to have been killed in
a car crash in 1966 and a Canadian was to have taken his place,
My uncle sent me some tapes from Hawaii. The station was playing
some of the Beatles songs backwards. My uncle taped them for me.
I played Revolution number 9 numerous times. There is no doubt that
the Beatles were playing games with us. I'm pretty sure it was John.
They definitely backward masked a car crash and flames burning and
a bunch of other things. After I'm so Tired there is backward masking
of John saying Paul is dead now miss him, miss him, miss him. There
is a whole lot of other clues. It started with Sgt Pepper all the
way to Abbey Road. I was taken in then but I think it was kind of
neat now.
I know this doesn't belong here but here goes anyway. Just
as I thought the hidden messages of the Beatles was ingenious. I
thought Stairway To Heaven backwards masking is not. I've definitely
heard 7 different satanic messages while playing the song backwards.
I know for a fact Jimmy Page is into black magic which is fine for
him but I don't want to be subjected to it. If a recording artist
wants to sing about satan then let him do it up front not inserting
backwards messages to try and trick their fans. I think playing
games is fine but let's not get carried away.

Of all their albums, the White Album is the least of a group effort.
On different occasions, different members walked out calling it quits,
only to return in the next few days. Someone mentioned earlier that
when one member had a song, the other three acted merely as session
men. Actually, that's probably only true for Ringo, and maybe John.
As for Paul, I'm pretty sure that he was his own session man.
What I like most about the album is that each member (John and Paul in
particular) was able to work outside the confines of the group. John
didn't have to make his songs fit with Paul's and vice versa. The
result is an album of songs, each different, which truly reflects each
member, and yet the flow of the album is incredibly smooth. It's
as if they've allowed us to see the group as a whole, by examining
the individuals.
I can't wait for next week's release. My only question now is:
Abbey Road???

| I think the movie Jeff is refering to is the Compleat Beatles.
The movie also stated that the Beatles decided to go back to the
group formula with their great vocal harmonies on Abbey Road. I
think they knew they were heading for a split and wanted to go out
with a strong group effort. I read someplace that Paul used to play
a lot of drums on different Beatles songs. I think A Day in the
Life and Sgt Pepper were two of them. Also I read that Ballard of
John and Yoko was Paul and John playing all the instruments. Even
though the White Album was not a real group effort it is truely
an incredible album containing I think 30 songs. Excluding Revolution
#9 (which I think was Yoko's contribution) I think every song was
great and different in some ways from anything they had recorded
before. I can't wait to play the White Disc.

I was a little surprised to find out that it is two seperate

The jewel boxes are White, as are the side of the cd's

It doesn't say whether it is AAD or ADD as far as I can see.
The booklet with disc #1 has the lryics for all the songs, as
well as some very weird pictures. The small poster sized

| "Yellow Submarine" was packaged slightly differently in the U.K. than in the
U.S., and I didn't notice any differences between the insert and the jacket
for the vinyl.
I have not listened to "The Beatles" yet, nor do I know my number. I bought
the original when it first came out, but sold it many years ago when I bought
the imports. Since this was the one import I never found new, I have never had
a good copy as mine was scratchy (still superior to the U.S. pressing,
though!). I am PARTTICULARLY looking forward to hearing "Birthday", and of
perhaps being able to make out more of what's going on in "Revolution 9".
As for "Yellow Submarine", I decided for $11.98 that it was worth it, even
though the album wasn't done (originally) the way it should have been, as a
true soundtrack movie. I will have to say that, thus far, this album has
impressed me the most of any! The clarity on "All Together Now" gives that
song an entirely new meaning (I used to think it was hunky-dorey, but now I
see it as a highly accurate period tribute), and "Only a Northern Song" seems
more clearly to have come out of the "Revolver" mold than before. This, due to
McCartney's bass playing and Ringo's subtle percussion work. These two songs
sound completely different to me now.
I was disappointed in "Hey Bulldog", which sounded identical to the U.K. vinyl
(which is great, but I was hoping for new insights) and ESPECIALLY "It's All
Too Much". The latter is a piece I never cared much for until recently, and
only then after hearing pre-Steve Perry Journey's rendition. On this disc,
McCartney's drone bass line is so boomy in tonal quality and so dark sounding
that this piece loses all its warmth (Harrison's vocals also sound deadpan on
this particular number, whereas one would expect more emotion). It DOES sound
different from the vinyl, but sounds worse to my ears.
The big surprise was "All You Need Is Love " (I'm ignoring "Yellow Submarine",
which I did not listen to to verify that it was the same mix as on "Revolver").
This song drove me crazy last night, but perhaps it was meant to! The beat is
all over the place! Actually, there was a consistency to it, and I think it
was intentional, to give it a drugged-out sound. I never noticed this before,
but haven't listened to it in awhile since I don't like the song (funny, since
it was one of my early favourites). McCartney seems to be playing slightly
behind the beat, consistently, but then gets ahead of the beat on the cadences.
This gives the entire piece a sound of rushing, like a sloppy high school band.
I'm almost embarassed to admit it, but George Martin's score was a lot better
than I remembered, and was actually quite enjoyable except for that ridiculous
"theme and variations" treatment of "Yellow Submarine" at the end. This music
sounded great on CD, very natural and very much benefitted by the high S/N.
I still maintain that much of jazz is hurt by CD technology, but it is becoming
clear to me that much of music that is dependent mostly on mid-range for its
effect is FAR superior on CD, particularly in terms of vocals and orchestral
instruments.
I did not notice whether either CD was AAD or ADD, or whether it was even
marked as to which it was.

| I think the U.K. releases of many of these discs have had fancier
packaging than the U.S. ones. I know the first four Beatles' cds
were available together in a 12" square box (BCD had a copy). Also,
"Sgt. Pepper's ..." came in a cardboard slipcover. It doesn's surprise
me that they should have fancied up the "The Beatles" album as well.
Personally, I prefer they single jewel boxes, since they fit in
my Add-'n'-Stack drawers, but it would be fun to see the other
packaging.

early (a red vinyl Japanese import) and it got MUCH playing on
every type of stereo imaginable, I was quite excited about getting
this disc. Although I believe it could have been cleaned up more
listening brings back many memories. It's a little odd to listen
to double tracking of voices, instrument placings, etc., considering
what the group was going through at that time. BTW, if you haven't
listened to the disc or the lp REAL carefully, plunk on your headphones
and listen to the bass on the song "I Will" it's great ;-)
So, now I go back into my music room and put on "Yellow Submarine"
which is being traded to me for an early Beach Boys import by =ken=
who is more of a Beach Boys fan than Beatles fan and bought it for

Interesting thing about "Savvoy Truffle" This song is about
Eric Clapton (according to George Harrison's book, "I ME, MINE")
and his addiction to candy, particularily chocolates. Hence the
line, "you'll have to have them all pulled out after the Savvoy
Truffles." I guess Eric has/had very rotten teeth because of this
addiction. The book even had a picture of the box of candy that
the song came from and sure enough, they're all there!

I couldn't resist anymore, so I got my copy today. However, here in
Sweden the two discs come in a double jewel box just like the above
mentioned Billy Joel album. It also seems the number runs lower here
as well. My copy has #61885. The price however, leaves a lot to be

In the US (it seems) the double jewel boxes are a pain because they
don't fit the standard 2 foot x 4 foot anti-theft cartons! Elsewhere
(in Europe at least) double jewel boxes are quite common - especially
for classical music. (I've got a Bach collection of 4 CDs in one
"double" box - mind you, the book is separate). Also I think that
the serial numbers are a bit lower (where were the US CDs actually
manufactured, by the way?), mine is in the 20,000s.
Most CD storage systems in Europe come in single and double versions
so that its no problem from that point of view.

| My Genesis discs are European. I don't like that format, as its less
flexible, the direction of lettering on the spine reverses for the second
disc, and the second disc is on bottom instead of top (or on the left instead
of on the right).
My White Album has no number, and was bought at Lechmere in Framingham. The
book is also damaged as thet tried too hard to squeeze it into the case.
I listened to side one last night. Sounded completely identical to the
British import vinyl. Maybe, as with Sgt. Pepper, the way this album was
produced left little room to manoeuvre in terms of remixing.
Not that there was a need for remixing on this album, for the most part.

All original issues of The Beatles had the name in relief, uncoloured,
then a dot followed by the sequence #, somewhere in the lower right
quadrant of the jacket. If your old U.S. numbered copy has grey
relief, then you had it stacked next to a cheap back cover of another
album. I've seen South American, European and Asian issues from
the original issue set and even though the records differed in vinyl,
labels, etc., the jackets were standard.
The discs are still going for $22.99 at the Tower chain in Calif.
The Yellow Sub discs for 12.99.

BTW, on the HMV notes (additional to the CD booklet) they mentioned
that the original LP appeared to be serially numbered, but wasn't.
The only way to find out about the CD, however, is to list all numbers
until we find a duplication (if any). I'm not suggesting that we
should - but maybe it could be a separate note so that uninterested
parties could skip it (please!).
