859.0. "Jonathan Butler/Jazz Guitar" by DONNER::LEVETT (you've got to fight for your right to potty!) Wed Aug 12 1987 11:44

For those of you interested in jazz/pop/funk guitar, let me
introduce you to Jonathan Butler. I first heard a cut by him on
a syndicated David Sanborne (sp) show and went out and bought the
cd "Introducing Jonathan Butler". Couldn't find it in the jazz
section and was told to go to the soul/funk selections in the store.
(Independant Records - Colo. Spgs.) Anyway, the cd is on JIVE
records and though the cd doesn't mention how it was recorded, I
found the sound very clean. Jonathan is originally from South Africa
and now lives in London, credits Wes Montgomery and George Benson
for his playing style and I really like his stuff. I was reading
that famous PEOPLE magazine and it profiled his new album "Jonathan
Butler" so I went out and bought it. The cd is 72+ minutes long
and most of the album is vocals with a half dozen instrumental tunes.
He has a nice voice, and while his guitar solo stuff is more in
the jazz vein, his vocal stuff is reminiscent of Al Jarreau and
funky Michael Jackson without the high squeeky voice. Anyway if
you're into this type of music I would recommend both cd's. My
only 2 gripes is I really like to know how these are recorded,
ie., AAD, ADD, etc. and the liner notes on the new cd are so small
you need a microscope to read. Oh, well...happy listening.

As a matter of interest, HMV in the UK have introduced their latest
marketing ploy (at least I've not seen it before) - the "No Risk
Disk" with the "Jonathan Butler" album. You may purchase it on CD
or cassette and if you don't like it return it within 7 days for
    a full refund.

I don't see them doing this with chart albums, but isn't it a nice
idea? (BTW I bought it and kept it!)
