855.0. "Yamaha Mistrack Fix" by HUSKER::HENDERSON (Something by Beethoven please.) Sun Aug 09 1987 00:47

I past notes files in this conference I have noticed discussion
about older Yamaha CD players and how they mistrack a lot.

I have a Yamaha CDX2 and I until recently have been having this
problem also. Before the advent of CD's about 5 years ago I used
to have a job fixing audio equipment. I now work field service and
am rather bold about jumping into a piece of equipment head first.

Because of this I decided to dive into my Yamaha and try to get
to the bottom of this VERY IRRITATING mistrack problem. My machine
is 2 & 1/2 years old and it was a matter of fix it or get a new
one. Anyway, here's what I found:

FIRST, cleaning the laser helps. Just take a clean soft cloth
      and gently wipe it off.

SECOND, there is a simple mechanism that grips the CD when the
door is closed. This is where I found the problem. It is very
hard to explain the mechanism here. If you open your unit up
you will be able to see how simple it is. Anyway there are two
round grips, one on top and one below the disc that "hold onto"
the disc and spin it. These have 2 circular soft rubber pads on
them that make contact with the disc. These on my machine became
comtaminated with grease meant to lubricate another portion of
this mechanism. Somehow it seeped down onto the rubber pads. I
just cleaned the grease off and, magic, now my machine does not
      mistrack.

In order to get to the rubber pads you will have to remove the
upper portion of the mechanism. It is very easy. 2 screws only
partialy unscrewed and it will lift out giving you access to both
pads, upper and lower. Actualy, this mechanism is very simple
      compared to any cassette deck.

If you dont feel secure taking the cover off and removing the upper
portion on the drive mechanism then dont do it. It is however, very
easy to do. The way I see it is that if your machine is out of warrenty
and the mistracking drives you crazy then it is worth a try. In
my case it was fix it or get another machine. If it is a CDX2 like
mine then it would not take much of an excuse to get a new one because
this is a good sounding machine but it does not have many features
    compared to the new ones.

If you screw up your machine I will not be held responsible. It
is however hard for me to imagine messing this up, it's very simple.
