849.0. "Is it Laser-cleaning time?" by VAXWRK::SCHNEIDER (Some folks trust in reason) Thu Aug 06 1987 15:48

One day I was listening to a CD and everything was fine. The next
CD I put on took an inordinate time before it started to play track
one. I could hear it whirring and finally clicking after about
30 seconds as compared to the usual 3 to 5 seconds. Ever since
then, the player seems to be taking a long, yet constant time to
    begin playing.

    Anyone familiar with these symptoms?

I am not familiar with the symptoms, but I know where you can buy
a laser-cleaner. I bought one becaues my player was a display model,
    so just to be safe.
It was at Letra City, Rt. 9, Framingham. It cost $20 (ugh!), and
works automaticly. Just put it in, and a few seconds later...all
done. I think you may find one cheaper if you shop around.

I would suspect the disc before I suspected the player. Does that disc do
similar things in other players?

849.3It should work in any playerUSMRW1::RBURNETTRICHIE...And the RICH get RICHERFri Aug 07 1987 09:5211
All you have to do is put the disk in. It is programmed so you don't
have to hit the play button.
It spins for a few seconds. There is a brush on the bottom which
goes over the laser to clean the dust off it. When it stops, just
    take it out.
It reccommends using it every 10 hours of disk play. I've used it
    3 times with no problems.

I can't speak for the disk in other players, because I haven't tested
that. I suspect not, because when this "condition" is in effect,
it happens with any disk, including those which had no lag time
    to find the first cut.

I may get the laser cleaner anyway, as .1 suggests. Any other
suggestions as far as brand? Store? Price?

I had the same symptom (long time to seek to any track, including
first, and problem arose on disks which used to be fine.

Turned out to be a worn worm gear (on the laser carriage transport)

Re: worn worm gear (say it 3 X's fast)

Is this something I can fix, or should I get a professional? Where
does one get a new gear, and how do I find exactly which (model)
    one it is?

A "worm gear" is a rather normal-looking (but not quite) gear that
mates with a "worm", which is a a cylindrical gear that looks like
a non-tapered screw (i.e. usually one helical tooth). Be sure you
ask for the right part (but in general they should be replaced
together, even if only one appears worn).
849.8Don't replace, just bend/meltCTHULU::YERAZUNISVAXstation Repo ManFri Aug 14 1987 17:1911
The one in the D-7 has a steel worm screw and the mating part (often
called the "nut") is a piece of Delrin plastic.

I fixed it by bending the spring on the Delrin to increase the tension.

If it wears more, I guess I can heat the steel worm screw and use
it to melt a new set of teeth into the Delrin block!

I have been recently experiencing a static interference toward the
end of certain discs/sometimes present, other times not. It is similar
to bad radio reception. I also have been having trouble with lag
time in track start-up. Could these problems be associated with
dirty laser lens and possibly be eliminated with a cleaner?
849.10All disks skip in my TechniquesREGAL::KARDONScott Kardon, EPIC/INFO (spreadsheet)Tue Jun 07 1988 11:4514
Lately, I've had a problem that occurs with all off my discs
(leading me to suspect my laser). The disks play fine, but
occasionally "skip" forward to different parts of the song being
played. As I said, the problem occurs on all of my disks
(about 100 or so) and they all work fine on my friends players.

Is it the laser? Also, I used to have the habit of playing a disk
before going to sleep and leaving the disk in the player (with the
power on) after the music stopped, all night. Could this damage
something? I have a Techniques SLP.

    Thanks,
    -Scott Kardon

Ha! I have the same problem with my slpj11. Just last weekend it
started skipping ahead. it did this about a year ago also. I guess
I bought a piece of junk, although when it's working it sounds ok.
I certainly won't buy another Techniques product. I'm going to
write them a letter also just to let them know how I feel.
I'll be bringing it in for ajustment this week or next so i'll
post what it cost, last time it was under warranty.
I'd also like to know how many other Techniques owners have
    had this.

Have you ever considered that you may in fact have an unauthorized
"clone" CD player, that is trying to horn in on Technics' brand name
with a similar sounding name? :-)

I wasn't too thrilled with the Techniques I had a few years back.
They aren't very well made. The SONY, Denon and High end Philips
are built like tanks. You get what you pay for...

re: .9

Same problem here. Cleaning the laser (as in cleaning disc) is insuff-
icient - try bringing it in for service. Cleaning laser and disc may
	eliminate problem temporarily only.

        >Is Technics and Techniques one in the same?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, technics would be
the degree of skills shown in any performance, while techniques are
the systematic procedures by which tasks are accomplished.

Technics is also the name of a well known consumer audio equipment
manufacturer, affiliated with National and Panasonic. Techniques is
the way some people say Technics. 8^)

No big deal was made! I didn't know if maybe there might be 2
different companies with a similar name. If there were 2, then
we'd let people know about the one that was hoarding in on the
    others name/quality.

849.20CD player repeats sections...SLDA1::MITHALFri Jul 01 1988 10:4212
I have a problem with my CD player (a Harmon Kardon HD500) which
I bought second hand, and it sometimes repeats a couple of seconds
of the disk over and over again.

I was wondering (hoping?) if this is a laser problem and could be
fixed by buying a laser lens cleaner.

If it is, could you recommend a good cleaner to buy?

    Thanks

I have been told by a few people that the "laser cleaning" discs
sold at 25.00 and up are virtually useless. Any comments?

re .22	As to how virtual maps to physical, I don't know. Being
basically cheap I've never bought one, I open up the player and
clean off the "head" with common rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip, it
    works.
