Before I start calling around for catalog searches, I wonder if anyone here knows the status of these recordings. Virgil Fox made two live recordings "Heavy Organ: Bach live at Fillmore East" and a second in the 'Heavy Organ' series (the title escapes me) which was recorded at Winterland. Both recordings were on MCA. Both were formerly released on DECCA. I'd like to know if these (for that matter ANY of Virgil Fox's recordings) are out in CD. The live recordings won't win any awards for high fidelity, but the performances are perhaps the most energetic live performances of Bach ever recorded. Heavy Organ: Bach Live at Fillmore East Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor Perpetum Mobile for pedals only (arr. Mittleschulte) Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God. arr. Fox) and more Heavy Organ: Recorded at Winterland Toccata and Fugue in D Minor Gigue Fugue Air for G string (arr. Fox) Thanks, dp

RE: .0 I agree about the live "Heavy Organ" performances. I was at the Hartford, CT. performance and it is one of my fondest musical memories. I am very disappointed by the albums, though. First off, the sound quality is poor. That I could live with (after all, it's a rock-concert-style live recording). What bothers me is that the music's been butchered. They cut pieces out here and there to make it fit on an album. The development section is missing from the D-major Prelude, and the whole Prelude of the A-minor Prelude and Fugue is missing. --PSW |
