819.0. "Steal This Disc" by VLNVAX::KARLSON (Only 168 shopping days until Xmas!) Fri Jul 10 1987 09:00

Well, last night on ET (I was flipping through the channels, I'm
not a regular viewer! 8^), I saw Nina Blackwood was giving her
    rock report.

Seems as tho' there's a compact disc coming out for $6.00 and she
says it has 21 artists on it (I'm assuming that means 21 songs),
and the total playtime is supposed to be over 72 minutes.

It's called "Steal This Disc". Anyone know anything else? This
sounds like perhaps the price breakthrough we're looking for???

Sounds like something Abby Hoffman would do.

One of the artists I remember them mentioning was Jimi Hendrix,
and they reeled off four or five other names (all notable to some
degree) but my memory fails me in my time of need ...

I saw this disc in the store today, and ideed it was $6. The only
people I remember are Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and George
    Thoroughgood.

Even if the others are unknown, for $6 it is good way to listen
    to new music.

Sorry folks. I'm located in Atlanta. The store was Atlanta Compact
Disc in Marietta. I'm sure that all three locations have it, though.

I picked it up today for $5.85...haven't been home to listen to
it yet. Josh White Jr (an old favorite of mine), Frank Zappa, John
McLaughlin, Old and In the Way, George Thorogood, Devo, Richie Havens,
Doc and Merle Watson, and Jimi Hendrix were the names I recognized.

There were several others I've never heard of. It's over 60 minutes
of music for $6.00, not bad, unless the recordings are caca...

I bought it friday, (of course I also bought a CD player too).
Unfortuantly I paid about $8 for the disk (Maine, ya know).

I liked the selection and variety on it, and the recording seems
as good as the couple other disk's I bought with it. Of course I'm
only a beggining CD fan, but it sure beats my old turntable.

I hope this $6 disk is the start of a new trend, I also bought another
compilation disk for about that. It is full of new Boston-based
bands, but the name of the disk escapes me now..

"Steal This Disc" is a sampler from Rykodisc, a CD-only label located
here in Mass. They started out producing CDs for small labels
(including some early Rounder releases) then scored coups like getting
Frank Zappa to sign a CD contract with them (his *record* label,
EMI doesn't get to put out his CDs) and the Jimi Hendrix Winterland
CD. They have a *lot* of nice stuff available and do a *real* good
job with the sound, as you would expect for a CD-only label.

Also on Ryko, exclusively for the brave: the Residents!!!!!

While we are on the subject of RYKO, I happen to have a catalog
and I submit for your pleasure a few of the noteworthy discs that
they have. I have seen this label in a wide variety of stores so
    far.

    	DIVA-Original Soundtrack

I kept meaning to put this note in here, but a few weeks ago,
I came across (at Rockit Records in Nashua) a Digital Audio
Tape version of STEAL THIS DISC.

    It's title?

Why, STEAL DIS DAT, of course.

    (No, I'm not kidding.)
