I would appreciate any suggestions as to a good cd version of Rimsky-Korsakov,s Sheherazade and Capricio Espanol. The ones I have heard lately tend to be a bit flat and lifeless - especially the Capricio. (My all-time favorite was a '59 COMMAND recording by Jean Martinon - it was full of fire and passion.) If there are any good versions available on the new budget labels I don't mind saving a bit of money either. Thanks. Dirk

I'm happy with Muti's recording of Scheherezade on EMI.

The "Capriccio Espagnol" on Telarc CD-80055 is quite good. Of the two "Scheherazade"'s I have (Varese Sarabande VCD 47208 and Phillips 400.021-2) neither has stood out as being Great!. Both are good though.

I agree with .1. Muti's Scheherazade on Angel is pretty good although I have yet to hear a "definitive" Digital performance. If you are interested in Rimsky-Korsakov try the Antar suite (symphony #2) with Maazel/Pittsburg/Telarc - Also with the Chaikovskii Symphony #2. It is an excelent performance and the Telarc recording is perfect - as usual. I have the Mata/Dallas/Telarc-Capriccio Espanol and the Slatkin/St Louis/Telarc Russian Easter Overture. Both are bland, lifeless performances. Anybody have any recommendations for these R-K standards?

I have a recording of Scheherazade I'm very pleased with. It's Andre Previn conducting the Wiener Philharmonic. Rainer Kchl plays solo violin. Philips no. 411 479-2. DDD DFW |
