812.0. "BOSE vs WARFEDALE ?" by 22730::CECILIACHENG () Thu Jul 02 1987 07:45

    Hi,
    	I just bought a SONY D-30 (think it is D-3 in US) and have enjoyed
    it very much. Am planning to get speakers so that I can enjoy it
    in the office too. Two models I have in mind are BOSE Roommate
    & WARFEDALE Active Diamonds, anyone have any comments on these two
    or other suggestions?
    	I had a chance to listen to Video Roomate and was very disappointed
    at its sound quality, maybe it due the way the speakers were connected
    to the CD player, wonder if Roomate would have better sound quality?
    If Roomate is no better, the lower price SONY speakers would be a better
    deal.

    Thanks,
    Cecilia

    PS. Wonder if there is a separate conference on speakers and other
        Hi-Fi equipment, maybe I should post this note there.

	I also have a D-3 and enjoy it very much.

	I have listened to the BOSE roomates and find them
	to be the best thing commercially available. But,
	if I remember correctly, they are $75 a piece. So
	I bought the Aiwa A-8 set. It's two speakers with
	a built-in amp in each speaker. You might want to
	get speakers with amps if you don't have a small
	amplifier in your office. I find that the output
	from the D-3 using headphones is quite adequate.
	But when it drives the speakers, I regularly have
	the volume set on 8 (out of 10). I paid $75 for
	the both speakers. They run on two D batteries,
	and have a DC input line. They work without the
	amp, too.

    re .0, yes that conference for speakers and other HiFi equipment
    (as well as CD) is DSSDEV::AUDIO. From my perspective your questions
    about those speakers would be better served in the AUDIO notes file.
    But I guess (is this true, moderator?) that it could be here too.

812.3I'm happy with my RoommatesEXODUS::LEVYIs reality an implementation?Thu Jul 02 1987 17:3229

    I own a pair of Roommates which I regularly use to amplify an FM/tape
    Walkman, and I've been very pleased with them. I also plan on using
    them as rear speakers for a Dolby Surround setup, but that's still
    in the future.

    I believe the primary differences between the Roommates and the Video
    Roommates are:

    	Video Roommates have a built-in volume control;

    	Video Roommates are shielded for use next to a television;

    	Video Roommates are terminated with a pair of RCA-type jacks,
    	and are designed to accept line-level, as opposed to headphone
        level, signals;

    	Video Roommates list for $50 more in the States.

    As an aside, I've fed line-level signals to my regular Roommates and
    they sounded fine.

    		List Price
    Roommates     $229
    Video Rmmtes  $279

    I got my Roommates for about 20% off list....
