According to today's Boston Globe Walt Disney's record label Buena
Vista will be the first company to issue children's CDs.

The first release will be the soundtrack to "Snow White" to coincide
with the rerelease of that film. List price will be $12.98 and
include a picture book for the rug rats to look at as they listen.

Coming up soon will be a collection of Christmas songs just in time
for Labor Day (??) at $8 to $10.00 list and a collection of Louis
    Armstrong singing Disney favorites.

There's a review of the Snow White CD in the latest Digital Audio.
Apparently it is very good, includes tracks that were cut from
the film, and has a lot of background information added.

Woa. There already *are* children's cds, so how could a company
that hasn't released their children's cds be the first?

Windham Hill has already released a series of cds for children,
    such as:

Merryl Streep and George Winston "The Velveteen Rabbit"
Jack Nicholson and Bobby McFerrin (I don't remember the title)

No, those are children's CDs meant for adults...

Hey, I'm just reporting what the paper said.... you're right, I've
seen and heard those....(what *was* that Jack Nicholson one?)

Well, recently I saw a Raffi CD. Unless I mispelled his name,
Raffi is a writer and performer of songs for children.

[I saw it while browsing in Record Town in Shopper's World in
Framingham. I stopped in while waiting for someone to shop for
clothes, but didn't consider purchasing anything because of the
prices. Most CDs were $16.99, a $2.00 off special brought
prices to the range of several other nearby, but the special
only applied for a few discs.]

799.5Why CDs for Kids?AQUA::ROSTFour strings are better than sixFri Jun 19 1987 17:2217

I think that Raffi is a writer and performer of songs for children
regardless of whether you misspelled his name!!

What do you parents out there feel about CDs for kids? I wouldn't
trust my 2-year-old to run my player, but I plan to give her a cassette
player for Christmas this year. I can tape records just as easily
as CDs for her use (why give her the original? let her kill a tape,
then make another copy). What do you think?

P.S. My daughter dances uncontrollably evrytime I put on my CD
of "Graceland". My wife plays it a few times a day to keep her
    occupied!

My kids are a little older (6 + 8) and they've been playing with their
own little cassette player/recorder for two Christmas's now and they really
love it. When I was shopping for theirs I saw many that seemed to be
designed for little untrained fingers.

So everything they like from Christmas and Disney type songs to any current
Popular stuff I record for them and they have a ball !

Just watch out kids like to sneak up on you when you least expect it
with the recorder ON ! Hah, GOTCHA they say ! :-)

Peter.

My four year old daughter has been turning on the TV, setting the
right channel, turning on the VCR and putting in tapes since she
was 2. Right now she can handle anything on the stereo as well,
but I do not let her put on records.

I do let her put on CDs because they are relatively indestructible
and the playback device is not subject to damage from little fingers.
She even holds the CDs by the edges!

I can't wait for more children's stuff! She has Peter & the Wolf
and the Nutcracker Suite and loves them. She wants Mary Poppins
and Cinderella badly. I would also like to get Song of the South
    soundtrack.
799.8The King's Singers Sing For KidsKACIE::DEUFELDaniel Allen DeufelTue Jun 23 1987 18:586
There is a great CD out by The King's Singers for kids. I don't
recall the exact title or company but a perusal of a Swanns(sp?)
    should produce the appropriate details.

799.9Many CD's For Kids NEBVAX::GOSSELINWed Jun 24 1987 16:5311
Both CBS and RCA compact disc clubs have been offering children's
CD's (at least 1/2 dozen by Raffi, amongst others) for several months.

I'd second .8's advice about consulting a Schwann catalog for overall
availability of CD's for kids. As I recall, there's a section devoted
    to children's recordings.

RE .2 and .3 -- I think the other Windham Hill release is Jeremy Irons
(not Jack Nicholson) and Bobby McFerrin doing "The Steadfast Tin Soldier."

RE .10 [RE .2 and .3] -- Oops, I was wrong. "The Steadfast Tin Soldier"
is narrated by Jeremy Irons with music by Mark Isham. Jack Nicholson
and Bobby McFerrin do "The Elephant's Child."
