788.0. "Who plays Vibraphone and xylophone?" by NCADC1::PEREZ (The sensitivity of a dung beetle.) Sat Jun 13 1987 23:08

Well, I've been hesitant to bother y'all with this but:

Can anybody/everybody give me some info on people that play
vibraphone -- the ones I've heard are:

    	Milt Jackson with Oscar Peterson
       	Lionel Hampton with Benny Goodman

I've enjoyed both of these and would like to find some others.

    thanks for the help,
    Dave P

Gary Burton is a good one (plays vibes).
I don't know if there are any Gary Burton CDs

Lionel Hampton has his own band -- you ought to be able to turn
up some other recodings of his.

Gary Burton has a number of CDs out on ECM.

    "Whiz Kids" is his latest.

Also he has some duets with Chick Corea (on piano) available.

Milt Jackson also is a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) but
I don't know if they have any CDs out.

Bobby Hutcherson is one of my favorites....Blue Note should soon
be releasing some of his great older work.....For the time being
you can find his more recent efforts on the Landmark label.

Jay Hoggart is another fine contemporary vibist, you can find his
work on the India Navigation and Contemporary labels.
788.4Still more vibes....BETHE::LICEA_KANEMon Jun 15 1987 13:4713
Blue Note has already released a couple of "Blue Note Classics"
by Bobby Hutcherson. You will also find him on "Round Midnight"
(WB - soundtracks) and "The Other Side of Round Midnight"
(Blue Note - Dexter Gordon). Also, check out any of the blue note
discs. Hutcherson plays on a number of other sessions.

Cal Tjader is another vibist (is that really a word?). He has several
discs out on the Concord Picante label. Warm latin jazz.

Argh, blanking out on who is playing vibes on Benny Goodman's "Sextet".
The play between the clarinet and the vibes is wonderful.

re .2: There are at least a couple of MJQ CD's, the one I own
is "Live at the Lighthous" on Mobile Fidelity and the sound
	and musical quality are superb.

    Thanks for the info.

re .4 I thought Hampton was playing on the Sextet CD?

I've just heard about a new CD place here in MPO -- I'll check there
    for the people you've recommended.

    BTW: I liked their add:

    MOZART
    MULLIGAN
    NO MADONNA

    (Sounds like my kinda place)

I think Tito Puente or someone in his band plays vibes. He has
    a couple of CDs out.

It's Tito Puente who plays the vibes in his band of the same name.

    re: .6

Terry Gibbs plays the vibes on "Benny Goodman Sextet".

    re: .7, .8

Tito Puente also plays timbales and percussion, so don't expect
to hear vibes on every track.

By the way, check out "Mambo Diablo", a grammy award winner.
The most interesting track on the disk is "Take Five" in a
    syncopated 4/4.

(But, like I said, no vibes on that track though. Always wanted
to hear someone do "Take Five" on the vibes.)
