781.0. "Review: SIMPLE MINDS Live CDs" by FINGER::IBL (and feel the quality. :-)) Tue Jun 09 1987 13:23

Review Time! Short (but sweet)

Simple Minds have released a double album/CD titled "Live In The
City Of Light". The city in question is Paris, and the concert
was recorded in August '86. Both discs last ~40 minutes, it's
AAD, and the musical content is fantastic (damn, bias showing thru
a bit there...:-)) The CD was released in the UK on May 26th and
sells for about 8 pounds less than any other double disc. If you're
a SM fan, or even if you only like a few of their releases, catch
these discs just for the atmosphere!

Ian!

<flame off>

Ok, I am ready for the rotten fruit and vegetables...

You have your opinion and it wont change mine.
I have my opinion and it wont change yours.
Why is a CD-hater in a CD notes file? To raise H&D?
I doubt any will take the bait to flame since it really wouldent
make any difference now would it?

781.3I don't hate CDsKACIE::WAGNERI want my <esc> TV!Tue Jun 30 1987 10:3515
Several points...

I am NOT a CD hater, rather an LP lover, CDs are also quite useful
and I do own them.

Second point, I actually like Simple Minds, I just could resist
the opportunity for a pun.

Besides, sometimes flams are fun (?)

Sorry for any offense, but I thought that it was obviously intended
in fun.

781.4YEAH! If ya don't LOVE it, GET OUTTA HERE!CASV07::MWRESINSKIWed Jul 01 1987 13:2511
And besides, the name of the conference is not CD_LOVERS. It is
a forum for useful discussion both for and against the medium.
(Check out the early notes with gigantic flames against this
new-fangled digital stuff!)

If you're looking for something that only _praises_ CD with no hint
that there may have ever been or ever will be anything negative
about the medium, subscribe to Digital Audio Magazine :-)

Re/ .4:

Do you consider the statement "simple minds love cds" to be what you
call "useful discussion." I certainly don't mind anti-CD opinions or
jokes being expressed in this notes file, but I don't consider glib
insults to be a worthwhile use of our host's disc space.
781.6GEEZ, I said I was sorry!KACIE::WAGNERI want my <esc> TV!Thu Jul 02 1987 11:1325
re .5:

I apologized, and did not that it was a flame, it won't happen again!

However, what, pray tell is the difference between anti CD jokes
and glib insults? Why do they have to be different. It was a pun,
by definition it is a "glib insult" and at the same time funny (to
some people) and not to others.

It wasn't even an anti-CD joke, just a (admittedly controversial,
and in questionable taste) play on words. I, the author, did note
that it WAS a flame, and it was a pun, before it was stated, and
acknowledged that it could be considered in poor taste.

It certainly won't happen again, from the raft of ____ that I've
received, it isn't worth the effort.

I would request, however, that those who took offense examine their
consciences and see if *they've* ever punned something before. If
they've not, then my sincere apologies.

I really don't want to digress too far down this rathole, but just
to clarify my position, I wasn't at all offended by your remark.
I just thought it wasn't very funny, and it SEEMED to be intended
to incite controversy. If you say it was just intended to be funny,
I'm satisfied.

781.8How'd I Get in the Middle of This?!CASPRO::MWRESINSKIThu Jul 02 1987 13:0912
First, I support anyone's right to make puns in questionable taste
-- they're the only kind worth making :-)

Second, the small flame was directed at .2's statement of "what's
a CD-hater doing in a CD note". Whethere or not the joke was "useful
discussion", the impression I got from the CD-hater remark was that
only pro-CD comments were welcome.

Can we get back to the topic (he said sheepishly)?

No I dident mean to imply that only pro-CD remarks were welcome.

Ladies & gentle men we now return you to the topic.
