777.0. "TELARC: "Porgy and Bess/Grand Canyon Suite"" by STAR::JACOBI (Paul Jacobi - VAX/VMS Development) Mon Jun 08 1987 14:42

TELARC has a new release titled, "Porgy and Bess/Grand Canyon Suite".
Would anybody like to comment on this disk? How is music? Is there
any vocals? How does the DIGITAL thunder storm sound? This disk
appears the be the follow on to "Round Up" that I have enjoyed so
    much.

I bought it because of the pre-release hype of how long it took
a Telarc engineer to get an actual perfect "dry-storm" recorded
digitally. Two versions of the movement "Thunder Storm" are on the
disc....one with the digitally recorded storm, one without.

As usual, Kunzel and the Cincy Pops Orch did their homework and
play the pieces with strength, when necessary and with subtlety
when it's called for. They have my vote as the "Pops" orchestra
of the future. The Porgy and Bess music is solid Gershwin, and is
    recommended for Post-Modern classical lovers.

As per the label warning, be careful of the speakers during the
first thunder roll - it's not jolting, but the sheer power of the
rolling force could blow alot of woofers. It's done so nicely, that
it really doesn't interfere with the piece, but really enhances
the orchestral impersonations of the storm. I've only heard bits
of "Round Up," so can't really compare the two - but with Telarc,
    one can rarely go wrong.
